Team USA Still in the Lead

Team USA has won the Mosconi Cup 11 times, Team Europe 10 times, and there was one tie. I think the Cup is supposed to be a fun us-versus-them kind of competition. To read more about Mosconi Cup history, check out Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosconi_Cup

Shirt fouls, short races to 5, Europeans screaming at the top of their lungs every time an American is aiming for a shot, it's not hard to figure out what's happening here. Let those European tournament soldiers step up to the plate in an action match, one on one, for real money at the Derby and see who's the best in the land. My money is on the Americans, who play all games of pocket billiards. Americans are not one-trick ponies. There, I said it!

Tie goes to the winner, so they say. Even after this year's Cup, USA is still in the lead *and* the overall winner.

Sorry Jam, but no sale here. I'm rooting for Team USA as well, but we are currently getting our nuts shot off. I think Keithly would agree.

Statistically speaking, though, we're still in the lead when it comes to how many Cups have been won.

Keith watched a few matches yesterday and said the short races don't favor Americans. If they were longer sets, we might see a new sheriff in town. :p

The Mosconi Cup is supposed to be fun, and it does generate some competitive spirit. This format suits the Europeans, I think.

With Brexit in full swing, maybe next Cup should be one country against another country: USA versus, say, England or Netherlands or Germany? ;)

The USA have only won it once in the last 10 years.

I almost never hear the USA fans shouting and screaming at the tops of their voices when the event is played in the USA.

(insert sarcasm smiley - so the US forums user detect the sarcasm)

I was at the 96 event when Strickland abused the crowd for shouting too much. Thought he was woing to fight someone lol. Didn't stop the USA winning it that year.

It's Matchroom's fault really. They get them tanked up and then encourage them to bay like dogs. Hearn has been trying to do it in snooker too.

Darts is the same - been to one of those too.

Team Europe has played better. Period. End of story.

It's not the table, fouls, fans, couch or ugly shoes. They rose to the challenge better than team USA.

European tournament soldiers are one-trick ponies. The Mosconi Cup is tailored to European style of play -- short races to 5. Let those tournament soldiers play a long race for real money and see who comes out on top. My money is on the Americans.

The Mosconi Cup is all fun and games, and I enjoy the festivities. I know where the real strength lies in pool. That's why most European players move to the States and live. Where does Jayson live? Where does Darren live? Speaks volumes. ;)

Didn't suit Europe in the first 11 years or so. They got better and adapted is all, whereas USA pool has gone backwards.

What has GB leaving the EU got to do with a team representing Europe? Have there ever been players in the Europe team that were not in the EU?

Trick question as the answer is obviously yes. Tom Storm was in the team before Sweden joined the EU.

As to playing nations. Fill your boots and set the event up I suppose. This is the Mosconi Cup and is the USA v Europe. It is the most eagerly anticipated and viewed 9 ball even in the world today. Millions of viewers on proper TV with proper tv production values and not two web cams on tripds taped to a desk and a geezer man with a laptop.

Why change a winning formula?

What events are you on about exactly? What European events feature a short race to five?

And aren't more than half the European team based in the USA anyway?

That's the *only* way a one-trick pony team can win. Shorts races to 5.

Heck, I could get up there and slop a couple 9's on the break and balls in those big buckets for pockets and beat anyone too.

Americans play all games proficiently. European tournament soldiers can play short races to 5, but that's about it. Enjoy the Cup! :grin-square:

What events are you on about?

Can you give me a list of these short race events that Europeans play in?

Just a few will do..

You need a reality check !
Look at Mika Immonen, i mean he's a cry baby but the man practically won all that is important to be won in pool , 2 straight US Open, world 9 ball , World 10 ball, All Japan Open and guess what ..HE DIDNT MAKE THE TEAM !

Not even Shane can match his acheivements apart from the open titles , in fact Shane hasnt even won a wpa world title.

In the european team, u got guys like Darren appleton , Niels feigen, Albin whom all won at least a wpa world title exception being darren who won both 9 n 10 ball world title, and combined, a couple big money China opens competition ( Darren n Albin )
On the usa team, none has a major title to speak off apart from Shane's 5 us open n 2 world pool masters (pretty impressive ), which really pales in comparison to team europe !

Times changed , eam usa used to be the leading force but now can only play catch ups after taiwan , philipines and europe.

Good luck in apprehending that :)

To be honest. Can't see the USA winning the event any time soon. Won't be long before Europe is on top anyway

I also have to disagree here. We are getting our nuts shot off as Jay put it. My take:
The game has changed, US Players once dominated 9 ball. Played in the manner we play it here, 1 on spot, Winner breaks etc the US Players can still dominate.

However as the Euros have infiltrated the game they have also changed how it's played. 9 on spot, Alternate breaks have led to players being more safety oriented, they've also become "rollers" vs ball strikers.

US players have not adapted to this style of play that the Euros brought about in the game, it's showing, badly. Lousy safety play & decision making, big breakers like Morris, Dechaine, SVB have that advantage removed in alt break short race format as here & aren't faring well as a result.

They've not only stolen the Cup but the game itself as US players always played it. It's more refined now, I really don't like that as I believe pool is about dominating the table & therefore your opponent, that's what made it different from other sports. Now, that's not the case, these format changes have altered that dynamic, it saddens me.

You' re funny !

Apart from Shane and Rodney ( 5 yrs ago ), i think any of the europeans are in heavy favor of a serious massacre of the usa players
Apart from svb n rodney , none of the usa players will survive in the international pro circuit.
(C'mon team europe has a combined of 4 world titles comapared to 0 of Usa, team europe has a combined 3 us open9ball compared to usa's 5 and all 5 belongs to svb lol ), it clearly shows how even balanced the european players are or unevenly the americans are.

Now to answer your question, the europeans move to the states becoz of the culture n bigger prize money.
To put it bluntly , the europeans have been breaking into american houses while the americans cant do anything about it n just look on helplessly !!

On the other hand , now try asking Berg-whatever his name is, sky and douch-iane to try playing in the european circuit and see if they can even make top 32 appearances or if they wld even bother trying !

If they r that good, they wld be crashing every international tournaments right ?!!

Actually mike did in the world 9ball n kuwait stage not too long ago and how did he fare ? Not too good :)
Sky went to manila ago and words out that he boosted the economy by 5% when he was there.
On the other hand, Niels went there n schooled em on how to play proper pool.

Again, good luck apprehending that :)

Change is life.

Mosconi himself was not a huge fan of 9 ball IIRC ;)

Wasn't he pretty decent at that new fangled game straight pool? ;)

Comparing Bergman and Sky to Niels? Come on, man. Look at the age difference. Niels was competing professionally when Justin and Sky were just learning how to walk, much less play pool. :embarrassed2:
