Best/favorite ferrule material

:scratchhead:

LOL...something else to think about is a what type of ferrule. Capped or not capped.

I make my own shafts for my cues and I make my tenons .375 inches.

Most people make the tenons .312 inches.

I like the larger diameter tenon like the Original Meucci cues a long time ago.

.

Exactly with I was thinking. Besides the material it depends on how it is fastened to the shaft. Glued, screwed, thickness of wall, and etc.

Then is the tip applied with or without a pad.

Then there is the all wood option.

I like ivory as the chalk doesn't stick to it. I think others like the chalk ring around the ferrule.

I've been having fun with this stuff, acrylic. This ferrule has been through a lot of changes. This present set-up has been in play 4 months, just wiped it off, no caulk stains. It has been a few sizes with different tips - this lasted is extending a 1/2", back to just under 14mm with a cuesoul (S). I play and break with it, I'm at the place I'm the most comfortable for my shot, for what it is.

My favorite is no ferrule.
Tip glued on shaft is great.
Superb feeling.
Fresh like walking around the north pole in no undies.

?

For years I have heard ivory is the best. I have never had an ivory ferrule so ya got me.

I no none of us care what the pros use, tips, shafts, etc.

I wonder how many of those super elite pro shooters are using ivory ferrules. I mean if t was so superior I would think many of them would use an ivory ferrule.

ferrule

Play with Ivory and like it, stays clean.
Best for feedback or feel of hit old yellow Micarta
But Aegis is probably the absolute best followed by Juma.

Of course many other variables involved that could hamper any of these.

um... just the results after trying different sizes and tooling, losing some of the natural
shaft at times, then adding back via the acrylic material, shafts' at 29 5/8" with tip for now.

Yellow paper phenolic, lighter than Melamine and Juma.
Stays clean, and provides a great hit with less deflection

Black Juma. Because....you know the saying....once you've tried "black" you'll never....oh...nevermind...

I typically use Ivory, it seems to be the best and cleans easily.

I have a couple of the old westinghouse (yellowish) micarta that I bought 10-15 years ago. I think I bought 4 of them and think I have 2 left. It certainly is a different hit with this ferrule, IMO harder.

Interesting to see all the different opinions. I don't really have much opinion on material so much as I believe it's all relative to the ferrule design. For instance, a 1" capped ivory ferrule on a 1/2"x5/16-18" threaded tenon will obviously perform and feel much different than a 1" ivory ferrule that is sleeved over a .375"x1" tenon. The two ferrules will look exactly the same but will hit/sound/feel noticeably different. Fair comparison requires all factors to remain the same except material, and then the comparison is only good for that specific ferrule design. Every time the design changes, so do the results.

I wouldn't say brown but tan , yellow for sure. Here in Canada , it's not an easy material to acquire . Alot of snooker players really like it for joint material as well.
This is paper micarta too.
I'm making a few of them for my shafts .
They'll have 3/8 24 thread. I'm making them one by one.
Very durable and lightweight material.
Does not absorb chalk at all.

If the tenon is all the way through the ferrule, it is not capped.
If the tenon is not completely through the ferrule, it is capped.

Thanks for the replies!

I recently received the cue with Buffalo, got to say... I have a new favorite. love the look, playability and sound. Eric weighed in on the tread a few posts ago, and makes a strong point. It's more likely about the overall construction of the cue than just the ferrule, I gave the builder specific details about how I would like the cue to play and he delivered. So, I'm aware that could very well be the reason it's my new favorite.
BTW, it's 3/4" capped

You sure have changed opinion on the ferrule configuration's affects on playability.
