The Mosconi slipstroke

Neil:

Thanks for considering my theory.

I have read that a lot of the old time straight poolers used a forward grip, so the slip stroke may have been a way to put something extra on the ball, when needed.

From the video:

"There's a lot of strong players who utilized more than one stroke. One example would be Willie Mosconi, who would bounce back and forth from a pendulum stroke to a slip stroke, depending on the situation."

Impossible.

Before seeing this tread, never heard of a slip stroke. It's a pretty interesting stroke and as I'm always messing around with mine, also like learning new things, think I'll give it a try. Who had the best slip stroke, not including Mosconi? Would like to pull up some more videos and figure it out.

Is it agreed upon definition of a Slip Stroke? Maybe all the confusion going on is, one persons definition of it, is completely different from the other/s.

Cowboy Jimmy Moore was certainly the best known. If you view the youtube video of his trickshot
exhibition, you can see several examples.

Haven't seen much footage of Cowboy Jimmy Moore, and what's available is in terrible quality. It is clear to me, however, that he doesn't use slipstroke. He is just adjusting his hand position.

In some of the videos I think he may have a new cue, and therefore his hand slipped on the wrap.

And what about all those times he played where there was no recording equipment? There is this guy who says that he very rarely used the slipstroke, and only did it to show off for the cameras. In fact, according o he was using a death grip, dead wrist, pendulum stroke, even on the break. He was in fact an APA 3, together with Golden Flash and Mosconi back in the day. It's amazing how clever video editing makes it look like he could play..

Seriously though, if someone have video recordings of CJM that are of decent quality, please upload them. It's hard to even tell what's happening on most of the bad TV recorded ones.

In one of Mosconi's instructional videos he says ( in reference to "grip"):

"....in gripping this thing, you do not grip it like a baseball bat or a golf club, it [the butt] should be held very loosely in the hand, so loosely that when you're swinging this thing, it will have the tendency to move in your hand...."

Move in my hand? You mean like a slip stroke lol ?

Must be lots of footage on that video of him using a slip stroke then, no?

Lou Figueroa
guessing not, lol

NO, actually - with a slipstroke your hand moves back along the cue
as you pull it back for the final time.

Youtube video where he does trick shots - video quality is more than adequate to
observe the cowboy slip-stroking.

Ah, great, this argument again...I was nearly pulling my hair out when this thread was current. There was some quality troll-work being done in it, they really got to me, I must admit. My intentions were not to start an argument, but to show examples of Mosconi slipstroking, but the thread took a hard left turn and never recovered.
