Why are Some Streamers Free VS others

- Different business models of being paid by subscribers, vs being paid by sponsors (if both streamers are actually a business looking to make a profit)
- Hobbiest streamer not looking to make a profit, vs a business model streamer
- Hobbiest streamer with a real day job looking to make a small profit, vs a business model streamer where the streaming is his day job

I really doubt free streams make more money than PPV even though free streams obviously have bigger viewership.
The free streams for big events like W9B, China Open, Chinese 8 Ball would probably be paid or subsidised by organisers so they can survive.
We have heard PPV generating 5 digit dollars $xx,xxx but my guess is small streamers offering free streams that are not paid by organisers and rely entirely on ads make small money probably high $xxx or low $x,xxx. I imagine the small streamers will need many many streams probably streaming very week to survive. Hats off and kudos to these free streamers

The largest total I saw at any one time for YouTube plus Ustream was between 2,000 and 3,000. [Could have been more at some point.] And I think at least a few of those were duplicates (had both stream sources open).

i quess its a lot like pool cues, you can use the house cue for free or buy a Southwest for $4000 or anything in between.
I watch pool for free on ESPN, POV, Fast Lenny, upstate Al, you-tube and have paid TAR, Accu-Stats and many others. It's all good. This is a good time for pool, we have a lot of choices.

Free opens up the audiences whereas PPV bottlenecks the audience and limits the promotion of the sport. At least it does, for the time being. If pool got to the level of boxing, the market would be able to handle a premier PPV event that would see much better numbers and even sponsors on board. I find it ironic that PPV streamers act like it's an easy sell for sponsors to jump on board their shows, when its always the same 400 people that log on. If I was doing PPV all the time, you'd see a hell of a lot more product promotion and highlight clips from me outside of the show, because I believe in promoting the hell out of a sponsor. After all, they deserve it to have their investment converted to sales.
Why do I choose between PPV and FREE?
I can't speak for everyone else... I have been known to do both (free/PPV). Honestly, one of the reasons I've done PPV is to prove that it can be done better than what you're already paying for. I think it's healthy competition amongst streamers to try to make a little money and to put on a good show. PPV has its place in the industry but I don't believe in charging for ALL of my content because it would be too expensive and personally, I feel that it's just not worth paying for every event we stream - especially long tournaments where we can't feature preferred matches.
There are downsides and upsides to both scenarios. Maybe it's more a question of when it's appropriate...
I, like Lenny prefer the Free Model... Always have, even though I have strayed from the path a few times. I personally think streamers and players need to work together toward a brighter future for the sport. Codes of conduct, a higher standard of playing equipment and rules should also be the focus in pool if its really going to improve. The complete absence of an american professional pool association doesn't help either; the U.S. has no representation for the sport other than independent promoters, competing leagues, the streamers and magazine publishers. It comes as no surprise that there's so much kaos in this great country we live in.
We are all responsible to make this sport better.

The number is more like 50 or a 100-1 when it comes to viewers for a comparable event. 300-600 for PPV and speaking from my experience I get around 30,000-50,000 viewers for certain events and smaller ones around 10,000-15,000. Frost & Orcollo was huge with lots of eyes on it, well over 100,000 people tuned in, over 220,000 people alone saw the flyer and the flyer was share over 1600 times.
Both models have there place but for the growth of the sport we need people seeing the game and our finest players. New viewers aren't likely to buy PPV as they won't know what to expect. I did see in the past where you could preview the PPV for a few minutes before purchase which was okay. We need new blood in the game and eyes on it so free streaming is a tool for that.
We exceeded that number for our total viewers for the duration of the match. Peak viewers at the same time watching hit around 4800, 2800 on Ustream and YouTube hit over 2000. Pretty solid for one pocket and I truly believe that a big money 8 ball between say Shane and Dennis would be the biggest ever. :smile:
Right on buddy and glad you are doing this upcoming event. I won't be doing anymore events like that outside of our poolroom in Tempe, Freezer's Ice House. We open in June so won't be traveling for streaming besides maybe Oregon and Wyoming. We will have big events at the Ice House such as challenge matches and high entry pro tournaments which I intend to do free streaming paid for by sponsors and fan contributors. Keep doing what you are doing buddy, you know you have my full support! :thumbup:

100,000 UNIQUE viewers. Meaning 100,000 different people logging in? Or was it so many thousands coning and going and watching that equaled over time 100,000? The latter is what I would guess....... ????
