I have read nothing but good things about Schmelke cues, so I think I
will get one. They are inexpensive so if I don't like I will give it to my
11 year old grandson. My question is under the wrap option it lists
black leather flat. What does that mean ?. Has anyone seen one, and is
it done pretty well. It's only a $60 up charge so I was kind of wondering.
thanks jack

Never seen one of their leather jobs. I'd call and talk to David. Been thinking about either a cork or leather for mine. I've heard the guy at Seyberts does good wrap jobs also.

I say no.

I would keep the $60, add $40 to it and have someone that has a better selection of leather do the wrap, you'll be MUCH happier with the outcome.

Here's mine. I think the "flat" means smooth leather as opposed to textured leather.

I also have 2 with the leather wrap. Both are excellent. The fit and finish on mine is perfect and it feels nice. Couldn't be happier with my Schmelkes.

I'd like to ask a question, and please don't take this as an attack against Schmelke. Has something changed in their cuemaking operation since 2008? I ordered a few custom cues from them back in 2008, and had nothing but issues with the orders. And I'm talking about 4 cues in a row. Have new standards been put in place? New cuemakers? Again, I'm not slinging mud. I'm asking, as I would really love to hear that they've stepped up their game.

Hi Shawn, my experiences with Schmelke since 2008 has been great. I purchased the cue pictured in a prior post and that transaction was flawless. Since 2008 I also had 2 40 year old Schmelkes that they re-finished and one of those had a leather wrap and he found enough of the original product to redo mine. These were my experiences with Schmelke. I'm sorry that you have had 4 bad experiences.

Schmelke seems to be gaining popularity for their custom orders around here.

I have a feeling that is no accident. What they might have specifically done or are doing to merit that is something I am unaware of.

I am curious though...

.

Recently got a something complicated custom from Schmelke and even though they made a mistake on the taper I thought the experience and communication and especially the willingness to help was exceptional. Got a fairly amazing full splice cue for $200 with hand picked wood, custom tapers and demanding weight constraints.

Yes.

I ordered one with no logo.

Wish I had done that. I dont mind it too much but would look better without it. Quite pleased with the quality of the cue and the overall experience. Hard to imagine a better deal in a first time cue. Mine was a full splice with custom tapers and several upgrades, special weight, blah blah blah. They even let me choose the rosewood they would use on the cue, and it cost just over $200. Pretty amazing.

So if you order one of their higher end cues with no logo could a person try to pass it off as an unknown custom for more money?

I assume one could do that if they wanted to and found somebody who didn't know a lot about cues or cue makers.

The reason I didn't want a logo is because I think that the logos of many cue makers are too large and tacky and take away from the looks of the cue.

For what it's worth, I don't buy clothes or anything else with gaudy logos on them. I like plain and simple. The same reason I never order cues with inlays and fancy designs. I buy cues to play with...not to look at.

While we are on the subject, if someone is buying a cue and can't tell the difference between a "higher end" custom cue and a "knockoff", then maybe there IS NO DIFFERENCE...besides the "LOGO" or "NAME".

I have played pool for over 50 years and worked in a pool hall for years. I have had HOF custom makers make me cues and I've had plenty of production cues. Some of my production cues have played better and looked better than my custom cues.

I'm not one to say that "one-man" custom-crafted cues are "better" than production cues. In many cases, they are, but that is not the rule.

As far as Schmelke cues are concerned, I consider them "custom-production" makers. For my cue, I ordered the butt blank made from two woods that I chose. It wasn't a pre-made blank sitting around in their shop. I ordered the weight and dimensions of the butt that I wanted. I ordered the wrap, the butt cap, and collars. I ordered the G-10 pin. I ordered the shaft with my preference for taper, tip, and ferrule.

What more "custom" could I have got?

Mine will be coming in another week or so.....

Question: I got the 3/8 quick release joint, but Schmelke does not sell the joint protectors for them. Anyone know what joint protectors will work and where to purchase?
