2018 US International Open - Observations

Man, I came in this thread to read about the event, and it's all discussion about the commentary. Sheesh!

I'll go check another thread.

Glad I quit pool 14yrs ago

Not one nice comment about anything. Complain nonstop. Pat spent at least one year of hard work putting this event together, at minimum. Probably will lose money on it and nonstop complaining here. Unreal. If I was around half of you arrogant Aholes a swift backhand would be coming I’m sure. I feel the arrogance and attitude through the screen. Some of you were born that way and will never change others choose to be that way. How about thanks Pat great event. Thanks Danny for being there and doing your best yes it’s not to everybody’s Liking but it’s your best and I love it. Anything gratuitous to say??? Anything??? Woke up 5am to read this crap. Back to bed.

Pat is a very smart business, and I highly doubt he'd be doing this if he were hemorrhaging money.

People wouldn't complain if it was free, well perhaps some, but not to this extent. However, since everyone does pay to watch the stream, they have every right to voice their opinion.

Most if not all the suggestions here are good. And most if not all suggestions are not new by any stretch. Pool is broken, and this is just another example. I’ve sat in the booth for several different streamers. Maybe I’ll put together a list of best practices and worst practices.

For a small example, one streamer has cough buttons, while another major streamer doesnt and doesnt seem to find them necessary. Another streamer wants them, but had other things to buy, so I bought them a pair.

The first event using the Skittle set, we had a set in the booth to reference. It was and continues to be difficult, especially with the less used stripes.

Hey pal,

Pat brings Danny on board absolutely and without a doubt out of respect for who Danny is and what he has to offer our generation as well as they have been extremely close friends for decades.

Let's not forget Danny is 83 and not in great health. I hang with Danny regularly and I'll tell you for a man in his upper senior years, he'll shoot the pants off of you and probably still knock a few guys out.

We're can all appreciate what you're talking about with regards to calling the wrong ball, I don't care what anyone says, it's hard to differentiate balls on television even for younger players. Not knowing someone's age is a statistic that should made available to the commentators. I'm a current player and I can't keep up with all the players, let alone their demographics.

I agree that a sports commentator should be A) knowledgeable on the sport, B) Entertaining and articulate, C) Provide some aspect to their presence that you or I can't provide, like historical comparisons, rule creation, format change timelines, etc.

Believe me, you might not agree with Pat's decision to include Danny to do the commentary, but when a living legend, who's played professional in multi-generational events is no longer around to do that commentary you don't seem to care for, many of us will sadly and regrettably miss him and his colorful character and all that he does offer us with his commentary.

Look at the picture, how many of these guys are still around to even have in our lives let alone be privileged enough to commentate the US Open.
Wait till the USIO9 event starts up and Matchroom begins to bring their typical lineup of commentators in.
I love Jerry, but some guys are just not cut out to do this stuff. Hmmm sounds familiar.

Look Pal!

Its my opinion and many others share it too. You have your opinion and many share it so no need to get butt hurt cause your buddies with Danny. I'm sure he is a great guy and yes I will agree he is a legend as that can be backed up with factual data. You know what else can be backed up with factual data? The fact that he is horrible at commentary and calls the wrong balls, shots, patterns, safes, etc etc...this can be backed up via hundreds of accu-stats matches he has commentated on.

I've done commentary a few times and have learned to try and run around a few minutes before, look at the table, look at the brackets, google whose playing and tried to offer a semi-coherent narrative. It's not tough and prep work helps.

Gotta agree with everything Casey says here. I mute my volume when DD is on the mic. Just cannot take it. He's a legend, just not at commentary.
YMMV.

One thing is for sure, you'll never make everyone happy. Constructive criticism is necessary to improve the product. I don't know Pat personally but he would not have made it this far without using it to improve.

I don't think AZB or any other site goes this far, but something we could do to help out would be to create a spreadsheet/database of the top players and all the static data that people mention in the posts like their age, place of birth, past wins etc. This could be kept online with a few care takers that have access to make changes and add details and could be accessed by the contaminators real time. Maybe the top 100 Fargo rated players would be a good starting point. I have the technical background to do this, if some of the guys that know the players on and off the table would like to get something started let me know.

Maybe you should learn how to read.
...you seem to have selectively read only the critiques.

I couldn't agree more with you! No wonder pool is in such a horrible state over all.
It still baffles me they let Danny in the booth and I know many will bash me but his time has been up for years as far as announcing. He just keeps getting worse!
The pioneers of the game, wanted him in the booth and that speaks volumes for me...

Grady Mathews, and many others told Pat Fleming to look out for Danny and they collectively stepped aside and left the job to Danny...

He was /is one of them! The pool community looks out for its own! That is one of the things I love about the pool community.

In my opinion, we owe our elders and soon enough it will be time for some young man to replace him when he can't do it any more. Jeromy Jones has the most experience! But, Hatch and Rodney Morris have the most need and would benefit from a commentary spot in broadcasting... I really like, Ra Hanna because he has a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Plus, dresses for success and is knowledgeable and most people love him...

Just my two cents on the topic.

Danny DiLiberto is a fine man and a living legend who saw all the greats back to the Mosconi days and has more war stories than President Eisenhower. He is amusing, too. That's what he adds.

I'm proud to call Danny my friend and he's a guy I can't help but root for. For me, though, he is no longer a good commentator. Still, I admire Pat for continuing to use him.

I’m a huge fan, subscriber and proponent of Pat’s incredible Accu-Stats productions (especially the $12.99/month subscription streaming service) - - - and after watching many matches with both JJ and Danny commentating, I’ll say they have a perfectly paced, flowing and easy-to-listen-to dynamic.

One of the nicest things about it is, that a viewer can turn down the volume and watch in complete silence and guess what the players are thinking and what shots they “should” take and so on - like we all do when watch our friends play

Special thanks to all of the commentators that take time and have the chutzpah to work those microphones.

off to you, Pat!

Even DiMaggio and Marciano knew when to retire.

Shane, Skylar and Justin B. in the final twelve at the Open. Looks like we need ALL three of these guys at the MC imo. I'd definitely add Justin to the list if I were Captain.
