I’ve about had it with gambling. I might be a tournament only player from now on. Everyone I beat turns into such a piece of crap by the end of the night. Cheating you on close hits, not paying up, sharking, and arguing over everything under the sun. What a waste of energy.

Here I sit, “the big winner” and I’ve now got another enemy at the poolhall. No satisfaction at all. This is no longer worth it. I wish people could just sit quietly in the corner and pay up when they lose. It’s great practice for your game but it’s just not worth the aggrevation for someone like me.

I don’t have the energy to deal with people. I’d rather just give the money back at the end and enjoy the competition. That’s all I’m in it for anyways. Even when you win, you lose. Such a shame...

a smart gambler doesnt have those issues and can handle them while still getting the money and getting paid.
sounds like being just a fun player is more up your alley. which is fine.

Is this at a bar or a poolroom? Usually, things you mentioned
happen in bars as opposed to poolrooms and that's why I ask.

Not sure of your skill level but, do like me and play stronger shortstops and "any and all" pros that cross your path in the following way:

What ever game "they" want to play

Even, don't ask for weight, no matter who they are

Bet within your comfort zone, don't add extra pressure while playing strong players. That way if/when you lose you will know it wasn't because of the bet.

Most all pros do not care what game or even small bets because they know it's a sure thing.

If money is no issue, like in my case...... its awesome, win or lose does not matter in the least.

No matter how much money you may have, even small bets will matter if your like me. I hate losing to ANYONE.

Your situation is extremely easy to remedy as long as you don't mind stepping up and playing a beast or at least a smaller monster...lol.

I played a dollar or two a game in the 60's. I netted $42.50 a week. I beat a better player for $20...he leaves the room and screws me. Same thing happens again a few weeks later with different player. I win $20 and says he has to go the car for his wallet and forgets to come back. Never played for cash again.

so for you non gamblers that gamble and get stuck.

before you play someone you arent absolutely sure will pay off make him show a certain amount. then you pay after every game. then you can only get stuck for one game. and generally winner pays the time so if he sticks you you dont pay the time which is probably more than the one game. and never play sets with a stranger just game by game.

for you guys that get rattled. get over it and put it out of your head.

All that whining is a move. Just put the screws to them and make them squeal like a pig. You job is to win. If they can't match your game or handle losing it is they who shouldn't play.

It's a destination we all reach sometime.

If we're lucky/smart/whatever.

It goes with the territory. Gambling at Pool is COMPETITION and competition can get heated at any level. Just take a look at how tempers can flare in all the pro sports sometime.

To be a good gambler at pool, you really have to 'want' to beat the other guy and not really care how he will react. If you don't have that killer instinct, then gambling at pool is not for you. Just go back to playing for the love of the game, where no money is on the line. Egos can still get involved, but it's not nearly as big a deal as when money is on the line.

Back to your main points. As for not paying up, just pay after every game and if your opponent can't pay (the "air barrel") the game is over. It's not a bad idea to post for one game or for the set prior to starting. That way there are no issues about getting the money if you win.

Sharking and arguing over close hits also come with the territory, especially when playing certain guys who are prone to such behavior. You can chose not to play with guys like this or you can play them anyway and use this as incentive to win even more. That's one way to shut them up. Playing guys like this are part of what will make you a better player, when you learn to not let any of it distract you. It's all part of the learning process. I've been in with Dennis Orcollo when his opponent tried everything to shark him and Dennis totally ignored him and just kept shooting (and running out). The guy finally shut up when he saw it was having no effect on Dennis. The other thing about this is that when someone has to "cheat" or try to shark you, it's a sign of weakness for you to exploit. What they are telling you is that they don't think they can beat you and have to try something to take you off your game.

After saying all that, I can totally relate to your inner conflict. You want to play against good competition to improve your game, but you don't want to deal with assholes to do it. In almost all pool situations, there are a group of guys who have money and aren't afraid to gamble and will be gentleman win or lose because the money is not significant to them. Look for these guys! There are MEN who I've gambled with for stakes as high as $1,000 a game and we shook hands after it was over and went to dinner together later!

I will also share my personal journey with you. I ONLY played pool for money for the first fifteen years I played the game. I had that killer instinct! After that period, I quit playing for a couple of years and came back to the game I loved with a new attitude. I never hustled a guy to play again and often enjoyed a fun game for the time or dinner, BUT if someone hustled me to play I might accept a bet if they so desired. So, I sometimes played for fun and occasionally played for money. This attitude has served me well since then.

I can also relate to you from my experiences playing poker. Poker is a money game, plain and simple. I like that and have played it longer than I've played pool, always in money games and often for fairly high stakes where you could win or lose in the thousands. The good thing about playing poker in a card room is you can quit when you want and there are no repercussions for doing so. What I grew to dislike was the childish behavior I saw on display by grown men. It finally got to the point where if someone at my table was getting too much out of line I would just quit the game, even if I was making money.

Anyway, good luck to you in the future. Just find a way to make it work for you.

Great post Jay, I needed that. All night my blood has been boiling over the crap I had to deal with yesterday. Thankfully, this morning I'm a little more calmed down.

I'm sure I'll be back at it soon enough but this weed out process to figure out who is and isn't good action can really take a toll on you. I'm learning, slowly...thanks again!

My regular one pocket opponent is a perfect gentleman when we play.
We bet a whomping $5 a game.
Never an argument or a disagreement.
When we first started playing I beat him like a drum.
He asked for an adjustment to 9-7.I agreed.
This seems to be about right as we take turns winning sessions.

One saturday he was not there so i played another guy for the same $5.
I had him stuck a whole $10 and he almost came to tears about how broke he was.
I said let's just quit and forget about the $10.
He said no keep playing.
I slacked off the next 2 games and we were even.
I quit.
Never will play him again.

Good on you! May be one of best decisions you ever made. Gamblers are Losers !

bad gamblers are losers. good ones have big houses, nice cars, great lives and all the things that losers wish they had, or at least kind of wish they had.

some gamblers put down those that dont, and visa versa. thats life.

I tip my hat to you. Wish I had a hundy for every time somebody trying to take one from me said I'd never get good unless I played for money.

The look on their faces when I say that's okay, I don't care that I'm a terrible player since it's just recreation to me is priceless.

I haven't played someone for cash in a long time. Too many experiences just like what the OP said and couple times there was v little money on the game. That's when I said enough.

Not to say I won't ever again, but I haven't in about 6 years.

I really only gamble when my opponent want's to play for low stakes simply to keep your head in the game so I don't have much to add in that respect. But from someone who took far too large of a break from the game because I wasn't enjoying it anymore, I encourage you to make a change quickly so you don't end up walking away from something you love for a silly reason like I did. I blamed other influences when I had control over it the entire time, now I am back and loving the sport more than ever.
