Why do some folks not wanna be known on here?

Some folks here talk like they can run 100's.

You ask for a video and they don't know how, lol. They take shots at guys whose pool cue case they couldn't carry. It's not as simple as you make it out to be by any stretch.

Lou Figueroa

If you're referring to me (since I'm the only one who posted I dont know how), i really dont know how and really dont care to know how to post a video.

I dont play 1pckt so it's really doing you no good, you can rest assured I dont chicken wing though. :)

I believe good players don't have any problem posting their real name or making their identity easily known.

This is not about how good you are as a pool player. It is about the fact that some people just don't want to let all the weirdos in the world to be able to check you out too easily. Why do you think that knowledgeable people recommend that you don't post all your private stuff on Facebook? Many reasons for that. To a slightly lesser degree this also applies to anything out in the open on the internet. I used to have my own (business) website and posted my name there. I don't have a problem to reveal my identity to people I care about. I give my private phone numbers to people only very sparingly. I don't run around in the streets of my city with a name tag. I don't talk on the cell phone about my private problems/medical issues etc. when I use public transportation or in public places. I don't tell everybody how much money I have in my wallet and I don't boast about my bank account. I don't show off my valuables on the internet. Some people do.

I believe that is everybody's own choice. The people who need to know do know.

Do you think that famous and well-known or rich people always post with their real names and reveal their identity all over the internet? There is a good reason why they don't and this applies to "regular" people to a lesser degree. Pool is not my only hobby and I also take part in other internet activities - hobbies, technical information and the like. With enough research you could find out about all of that since I don't hide my identity to a standard Edward Snowden would recommend. However, only intelligent people with a lot of time could find out a lot about me. my hobbies, my life, my family and people I love. But the regular jerk who just wants to be annoying or obtrusive can't. And I consider that to be a plus.

And I don't behave any differently since my early times on Usenet when I openly signed my name under a lot of my posts. I am pretty sure that some well-known and great pool players post here and/or elsewhere anonymously as well - although probably not a lot.

With all due respect, we aren't all here selling cues.

A Fool

It's a hobby and 9 out of 10 who inquire are told I don't have any for sale because I don't. The demand far outstrips the supply, therefore I'm not selling anything. Mostly just showing my work for those who can appreciate it.

I'd like to have some light online conversation about pool and my other recreational interests, not to mention sensitive topics like politics in NPR, without it being discoverable and searchable by coworkers, relatives, etc. I'm not ashamed of my opinions and am always ready to defend them, but I don't feel the need to sling it all out there indiscriminately.

I'm just a recreational pool player (currently around an APA 5) and have been into pool on and off for most of my life, so my name isn't of consequence to anybody here. If I buy or sell something, or meet up with somebody, we'll introduce ourselves then.

I'm not all that up on technology and security does and don'ts.

I honestly dont know "all" the risks of just putting a name on AZB.

Thing is, people put their real names, where they went to school, where they work, who their married to, pics of their kids....etc...etc...etc.. on FB. What's the difference in FB and AZB?

Again, I'm a pool player and retired and have extremely little experience with internet/security issues.

As you said, just like I did, there are "some" on AZB....(in all honesty, very few, IMO) that mouth off about their "skill level" but aren't willing to prove it online or in person. They are "a small part" of why I started this thread.

Another "small part" of why I started this thread is all the advice given in lieu of a "real coach"...... I see all kinds of really, really bad advice given to newbs from people that need lessons themselves on how to "hold" a cue.

On the other hand, I read all sorts of "physics class room" chit on here that mean VERY LITTLE to the average PRO....much less the average amateur player.

I'm not ever gonna say that any one person or everyone in general "has to come out" but, it sure would be nice if:

Your gonna woof....... or ...... give advice

To know who you are.

Anonymous posting can facilitate discussion or exchange of information based on what is said rather than who says it. We all tend to view another person’s words and actions through filters. The filters are the preconceptions and prejudices formed by our prior knowledge of that person or other persons with similar characteristics – age, sex, race, nationality, wealth, income, marital status, family history, occupation, avocations, height, weight, and on and on. But with anonymous posting, one’s words have to be evaluated solely in terms of the quality of the thought and expression.

Over time, of course, an anonymous poster creates a posting history or profile that, in itself, creates preconceptions and prejudices that filter what that person subsequently posts.

Obviously, it can be useful to know who the poster is when trying to evaluate the accuracy, wisdom, or credibility of what he is saying. But for most topics, that’s not essential. Whether the poster is Joe Championplayer, Joe Supercuebuilder, or Joe Shmoe, let’s evaluate what is said rather than who says it.

So who was it? I'm a HSV local. We've probably run across each other a time or two.

Damn, I thought I had an anxiety disorder. lol
The anxiety I have is walking into the bedroom at night when my wife is sleeping with her gun bedside. If you knew my wife, you'd be nervous too.

It is not even about anxiety. I am a "nobody" in pool. In another walk of life (science) I am known to a lesser degree - my name can be found in a few insider publications, mentioned on the side in some books and I even had minor newspaper and tv appearances. No, I am not famous in any way. But in that other field I might be comparable to what you call a lower level pro in pool or snooker. Known to quite a few insiders. I believe everybody has seen people (even on this forum) being outed. Only recently a guy posted some dubious stuff on here and someone outed him for his Better Business Bureau record with a single negative entry. Which had nothing to do with the thread itself nor even pool. The same guy who was outed posted private email of some other guy whom he had a problem with. But again, that was stuff that does not belong in a public forum. Examples like this emphasize the fact that not everybody needs to know your identity.

You could also imagine people being known to be gay, having been in prison, being a political candidate of some party, owning a major business outside the pool world and so on. There is no need for everybody to know who they are. Some of those people just want to be left alone WRT the rest of their life and only talk pool, here. They might want to talk to a small group of people about their life but they want the choice WHO they talk to about what. And not be dragged out in the open by some jerk in a heated argument or such. Who might even post anonymously himself.

If I see someone I recognize or they're talking about pool in my area I may shoot them a PM and talk privately. I let my name get out on a sports board I use to frequent once. For the next month or so I was getting dozens of Facebook and Instagram request from people I don't know from Jack.

"Alexa (or her dumb sister Siri if you prefer), how do I post a YouTube video?"

Why would anyone on this forum, or in life in general, allow an anonymous person to rent space in their head over boasting or bragging about a hobby?

I was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion over an incident for which I was 100% justified (Video) and yet people found me and made threats to me, my family and even a student at the middle school that my daughter attended told her that "your dad is going to prison".

I couldn't give a rats ass who says they ran 686 balls weak handed or beat the ghost 7-0 ten times in a row.

I do care however that if I provide certain information on a public forum and as a result I am doxxed and my life is affected.

Well said. The less you put out there the better.

And I'll add that we really don't know who is doing what with what we put out there.

Once you let it go, it is out of your control

One reason I have no idea who I have played. In the mid-eighties everybody that could run three balls thought they needed an alias. I took what they handed me and might remember it until I collected the cash if that long. Who cared? We are doing a cash transaction here.

I have been retired so long I forget but anyone who is still working age is an idiot to use their own name on any site, no matter how innocent. Sites change over time but will still come up in a search. Not only that, say I was pissed at somebody like my friend Lou. Since I have his name I can go sign him up at a handful of sites he would hate and also go to all of the social sites and create some fine profiles using his name. A few dating sites too, looking for girls or boys under twelve. The possibilities are endless.

These things would just cause a retiree minor embarrassment and a bit of anger at most. Working age? Co-workers will look you up when they are bored, possible employers for decent jobs will search the net before employing someone more often than not these days. People are losing current jobs over internet activities and getting resumes tossed in the garbage even more frequently.

A friend contacted me to tell me there was a new thread on a forum I hadn't been on in years. Title was basically, "Hu was full of sh!t!" I looked at the thread, already a hundred and fifty posts in it. Funniest thing of all, they were now all agreeing with me while posting I was full of sh!t!

The hot button topic? Physics. The people arguing against me had been defying the results of inclined planes and gravity. A lot like people on here that grasp one point of physics while ignoring the rest of the entire body of physics.

I read through most of the posts in that thread on another forum and just laughed. No sense getting involved with that bunch of idiots that had just figured out that gravity existed.
