I haven't seen one player have to slide a plastic ball on a string to keep score...all digital scoring, by individual score keepers at each table. The players just have to play. This is by far the most advanced 21st century pool tournament we have ever witnessed.
In the interview with the Matchroom producer, she said they have 32 tables, each with a referee and a score keeper...so to get all those individuals in place and working was a logistical accomplishment in itself.
Also, I realized yesterday while at the gym, the tvs were on espn and they were airing handball or some variant of that sport...this time of year is very slow for sports programming. Baseball just beginning, NBA basketball in playoffs (limited games aired on other networks), college basketball over, football off-season and not even draft yet, golf already held the masters....so it is very possible that Hearn could land ESPN in future U.S. Opens by the sheer size and quality of the production and the timing to where ESPN is looking for content. And that's when the major sponsors and mega payouts come around.
Every part of the tournament seems to have a purpose. This could be the gateway to pool's successful future.
