Frost-Danny Updates ????

Back in the 1980's, this game was played with the nine ball only and was known as back pocket nine ball. Jimmy Fusco, RIP, may well have been the best at this game.

Both games are played to this day daily in Philly. The same guys play both games. I doubt if either is played much in any other area of the country. Could be wrong:) Kenny is from Philly.

Thanks for the info. I lived in Philly in the late 1970's while I attended the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. It was back then that I met Jimmy Fusco and learned this game.

How are fouls handled? If I owe three, what happens if I make the only object ball on the table?

You don’t owe balls in this game on a scratch. A scratch = ball in hand. So 90% of the time it’s a loss. Unless the ball is on the rail somewhere and a bank is needed.

the way i play 1 ball onepocket when you scratch you spot one and need 2 to win
if you scratch again ....another ball gets spotted and you need 3
i also play you break with BIH in the kitchen

Same here.

I have never seen a scratch *not* result in the itchy one owing a ball for it.

That was a great game. Grady was pretty good at it as well.

From Scott's FB page....

Day 3 is in the books. Somehow I’m up 4 games but this man is creative. Here his pockets on the left. You can’t really see the other two balls on the lower rail by my pocket. He ripped all the balls and tried to pocket the 5 in his hole at the same time! I ended up winning this game but it’s stressful. He’s a real talent especially on this tight wet equipment.

If Kenny was playing, I believe they were playing the way it’s played in Philly. Being from Philly and playing this game all the time, I am sure of these rules at least lol. I know it’s played differently in other parts of the country.

So, there is a big difference between owing a ball with only one ball on the table at all times and always having enough balls on the table for both players to win. I think bbb says there are always enough balls on the table for both players to win without any spotting after the table is cleared by the fouler.

Agreed. A ball always physically spots, in my experience.

So then what happens when you follow a hung ball into your opponent's pocket? He gets a spot shot?

When I watched Kenny playing this game at DCC and also in Sterling VA, a foul resulted in an extra ball being spotted.

Back pocket 9-ball is different; in that game a foul does not result in spotting a ball (unless the 9 was pocketed), even though most racks end up playing out in a way that looks very much like 1-ball 1-pocket.

i think he has back pocket 9 ball and one ball one pocket confused

1 ball/ 1 pocket

the game is played differently in different areas around the country. in our area (kenny and i play in the same rooms regularly) we call the game "bare ball" and any foul results in ball in hand. there is never any more than 1 ball on the table. the traditional way is each player has 1 of the back pockets (behind the head string). But there is a variation where players get diagonal corners (1 front and 1 back).

So bare ball sounds more the end game of back pocket 9 ball, i have seen that played with diagonal corners. That's how Johnny World high jacked Dennis O at the Derby few years ago playing Back Pocket 9 Ball diagonal corners.

One Ball One Pocket like Kenny and Lil Jon were playing is basically just One Pocket rules using one ball.

O and they were playing for $3000 a game and Kenny lost 15 games = $45.000

your basically right. when flakes played dennis at derby part of the spot was that he was getting- a front to a back. bare ball played that way the pockets alternate, so its not actually a handicap. but playing back pocket a giving 1 player a front pocket to an opponents back pocket is considered about the same handicap as giving someone the 7 ball. Sounds like Kenny + Jon were playing standard 1 ball/ 1 pocket. Around here, thats very rarely seen. But i know its the more common way to play in most other places because there are no rules to figure out. if you know 1 pocket, you know that game too. Thanks for the updates Terry.
