Disappointing gesture from Shane

No, but thanks for the dramatic overtones.

Im saying that worrying about a player wiping chalk off his tip onto the carpet is the least of our concerns.

Apparently I need to be more clear I guess.

It shouldn’t be the least of concerns though, it really does look trashy plain and simple.

The thing with Tony chohan...people like an outlaw, especially Americans. My dad told me once when I was little (I was a terrible little sh!t) that you should always be respectful no matter what, even when you’re being bad. I took that to heart and it probably saved my life and has definitely saved my freedom several times. So much can be glossed over or forgiven for someone who is respectful, and just as important, respectable.

I feel like pool will never get big on TV like the beer drinking sports, just because so many have been ingrained to care about them and that basically uses up all their “sports attention & time allotment”. I’d be down with a campaign to sabotage the nfl and mlb, nba, nascar, whatevs. But barring their downfall pool will stay small.

That’s cool though, we’re cooler than them and have a much better game. The streamers keep it alive but the players need to help themselves out as well. No chopping, no conceding, no rack arguments resulting in mike D smashing the rack open for his enemy lol...and no wiping their tips on the f’n carpet. Occasional cue snapping is good for bidness, but only in like a hill/hill thriller. I hate suits and vests for pool playing, it looks bad and uncomfortable to me. Nice jeans, collared shirt...short sleeve. And just play good pool, maybe talk a little.

AZ has really gone into the shit tank, officially. A 6 page thread about wiping chalk off on the floor. Of a pool hall.

I don’t think it is about wiping chalk on the floor, really. I mean, that’s what started it, but I think it’s actually about the image of pool.

Regardless, it’s obviously a contentious topic. It doesn’t matter the triviality of it. How many times have you sat around with your mates shooting shit about the most mundane subject just because a couple of people disagreed? Rambo 1 or Rambo 2? Vanilla or chocolate? How much money would it take for you to do a lap of the pool room stark naked? I can’t do anything about world hunger right now; I just finished work and I’m tired, so I may as well talk about this while I’m watching Netflix before bed :D

Etiquette isn’t about the masses or what you do in your home. It’s about public presentation and representation of your peers.

If a snooker player did that, the governing body would have a word to them (if the public backlash didn’t get to them first).

The comparison with snooker makes a very good point. Snooker players get fined heavily for not attending a tournament. Ronnie was fined for not finishing a match and for putting the towel over his head A tennis player was fined at Wimbledon for not "trying his best".

On a side note, I never clean the chalk off my tip ever- not on carpet, with towel- nothing. What’s the point? To protect your case? I have a cheap case and don’t care if it gets chalk on it. I don’t care about fancy cases- never saw the point

So a lot of you attend pro tournaments and have probably seen Shane in person... He (as well as other pros) are very approachable, unlike celebrities... if you have a problem with it why not just go up to him (or anyone else you see do it at a pro event or the poolhall, or wherever) and tell him next time you see him.

I'm sure they will take the criticism constructively and not look at you like you have 3 heads.

Indeed. Ronnie has been warned for hitting the table with his fist. Not a full blooded thump accompanied by decorative language. Just a love tap really. Then you get Jason Shaw swiping Shane’s rack with his hand and calling him a “f%$^ing cheat” in front of hundreds of players and pool fans. Shane was a class act to brush that off and runout the match. (Still shouldn’t be wiping his tip on someone else’s carpet :p)

Of course he’d look at the person as if they have three heads. However, if the Matchroom organizers suggested not doing it, particularly on the TV table, I suspect he’d completely understand.

It's just a minor sign of why pool will never get ahead -- I have seen many, many pool players do this over and over.

Yes, the carpet may have coke and beer stains and cigarette burns. But you just don't do it. It is a sign of low breeding and disrespect to the establishment.

Not the end of the world but...

Lou Figueroa

Please explain what "low breeding" means will you, I'm waiting for your offensive answer!!!

I realized a long time ago that people do not change their "core" beliefs and actions simply because others tell them that it's incorrect or improper. Had a friend in the service from the mountains who we called "Hillbilly"...swore that it was perfectly okay to marry his cousin...wasn't about to change his mind.

PS: I drink juice sitting in my fridge straight from the container, wouldn't think of doing it anywhere else. "I do it at home" is not even a rational response to this situation.

I think if this was a big deal, the event promoter and/or event venue would address it. The players aren’t expected to hold themselves to a higher standard than the event requires. I bet it doesn’t happen in Matchroom events because they hold that standard. If CSi wants to approach that level of prestige, they might want to think about these things. Otherwise, it is what it is.

I think the major issue is if chalk gets inside your case -being an abrasive substance- it has the potential to cause micro-abrasions to your cue's finish. Over time, this might make it look dull.

For a moment, after reading the title of this thread, I thought Shane lead an impromptu chant of "Send him Back" after losing to Aranas. Glad to read it was just a chalk cleaning blunder.

lol, of course I didn't mean that literally.

It's like saying someone isn't playing according to Hoyle or Marquess de Queensbury Rules even if they're not playing cards or boxing.

i think i have been turned by some good arguments in this thread. i thought it was commonplace behaviour and excusable as such, maybe even engrained in his muscle memory. but it doesn't look very classy to the viewers

Rambo 1 or Rambo 2?

one of them is a very good movie, the other one is junk

New tour

Very poor timing for this thread.

I know a guy that was preparing to launch a new tour TODAY. The press release was lined up. It was going to be a series of ten ball tournaments with $10,000 guaranteed for last place so everyone could make a living.

But the promoter saw SVB wipe his tip on the floor and decided to cancel everything and focus on hot dog contests.

Seriously, I can see an argument for not doing this. But the title should be about wiping tips on the floor in general, and of a conversational manner. Not aggressively calling out our country’s best player. I might be talked into no floor wiping, but cannot support this type of indignant criticism to such a legend.

I don't need a written rule to tell me not to wipe my cue on someone's carpet any more than I need to be told it's not OK to blow my nose on my host's window curtains. I know we can't avoid getting into an argument about whether this is a big deal or not but I'm surprised anyone thinks there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

A room owner was on my team and he said if everyone does that and he has to change is carpet more frequently or with cheaper stuff. How fair is that to him. Since then I have always used my towel.

That's a streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch. If I heard ANY room owner say that, I'd wanna meet the man.

I don't get it. Seems like an important part of the cue to drag across a dirty rug.
This is my sentiment exactly. They're going to vacuum so I'm not worried about chalk on the floor. I chalk over the floor anyway so there is plenty of chalk already on the carpet.

I don't want what's smut walked in on someone's shoes on my cue tip.

I think it looks boorish to say the least, but I hardly doubt it had done anything to harm pools reputation with the public. They would have to be watching in the first pace to notice.
