AZers and the economic meltdown

Yes there are several moving stories on here stu and yours is one of them that really moved me . plus the ones that were laid off also.

As for me..well my financial crisis hit back when the housing boom went bust . several things happened during that time...a perfect storm you might say that resulted in me being homeless and sleeping in my truck for a while. Thankfully my 4 children were grown so i had no one depending on me and i never let them know what shape i was in. Pride i guess.

I knew 2 guys from the pool hall that commited suicide around a year or so apart when their bussinesse failed . what kept me going was resolve....my health...the serenity prayer and the fact that no matter how bad off i was there were people out there worse off than me. .

Today i am 65 and in decent health which i am thankfull for and a job that i could keep as long as i want ...as long as my employer stays afloat. I told my boss i wanted to semi retire when i hit 65. His response was to give me the work truck to drive every day and take it home at night plus a dollar hour raise. He didnt want me working part time lol. The raise was great but the 60 dollars a week i save on gas in my personal vehicle is nice also..

My boss is amazed that i outwork the guys we have that are half my age. I operated a 60 pound jackhammer all day long yesterday because i can run it better and longer than the 30 year old lazy asses we have. Mainly i run all the equipment like backhoes ..excavators and such. At the moment i could stay afloat for the next 3 months but regardless of my financial situation my priority is staying healthy and i wish the same for every one else.

Thanks for sharing your story. Your kind of steadfastness can inspire us all.

I know several people in business who would rather hire gray hairs, and people who served in military as they have a work ethic. They hire some Millenial who never show on time, if they even show on first day for orientation.

i wish you and the others here the best. I also run all types of heavy equipment and up to 14 hours a day. I poured concrete, placed Asphalt and now run a crew of 32. I will still jump on our 90 lbs jackhammer and show the youngens how to break out concrete. You have to be able to read the slab so it breaks correctly not bury the damn thing until it gets stuck;)

I've lost what I consider a small fortune in the markets but I suppose that means compared to many I had a largish fortune (I wouldn't call it that) and still have a reasonable amount left. If I wasn't a few years from retirement I'd not be concerned but the timing was not good for me. I wasn't fully in the market so it could be much worse. My wife and I both have jobs and there is only a tiny chance that will change.

So we'll be just fine. I sent my hair cut gal an anonymous card with $200 in it today, she's paycheck to paycheck most likely and not working at all due to state mandated closure. Felt a little weird searching out her home address on the public tax records but her first name is spelled in a unique way and I knew the general area she lives in...I think she'd understand.

Sent from the future.

I have a low six figures invested in about a dozen real estate limited Partnerships. ALL of them have communicated that there will be no more dividends for the time being until this crises has passed. That income paid all my bills each month. Somehow it doesn't bother me that much. I'm not sure why, but right now I feel blessed to have such a wonderful supportive wife and enough in savings to last us for the rest of our lives. No mortgage to pay on either of our homes (here and in the Philippines). Yes, I've been very frugal for the last twenty years since being near broke in the mid 90's.

I guess after a lifetime of wins and losses, one more loss is like water off a duck's back. I find myself looking for ways to help those less fortunate, with bags of fresh fruit or $$ to our local food banks. My heart goes out to those of us who are losing their jobs. I want to find a way to help them as well. I do know about ZipRecruiter that is a good source of jobs all over the country. They are constantly sending me PR type jobs and other writing assignments. So far I've never had to take a regular job. I'm not sure how I'd fare anyway since I'm used to owning my own business.

Temporarily laid off from work. Trying to find a new job. First time I've been unemployed in my adult life (42). I have my health and I own my apartment, so it's not dire straits just yet, but if the real-estate market crashes hard, then I'll be in trouble, as I don't have a whole lot of savings. Most of my money went to pay off my home.

The Senate bill seems to have pretty decent money for supplementing state unemployment, as well as a cash refund, details on the way. These measures are designed to help folks like you to bridge the expenses over the next few months. I think it will help a lot if they can get the money out fast enough.

Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, also said there would be a 50% payroll subsidy for 8 weeks for small employers who don't lay people off. I'll believe it when I see it but this could really help the job bleeding if true. California had 1,000,000 new claims for unemployment in two weeks, far surpassing anything we've seen. Also, there was some talk of self-employed qualifying for unemployment as well.

Monday morning quarterbacks will no doubt question if we should have just let it sweep through like wildfire and not closed down anything, the old sacrifice for the long term good of the young masses theory. ..but how could anyone ever make a call like that?

Bad taste to be funny at a time like this but I've heard it referred to as the "Boomer Remover" - don't flame me boomers.

This last week was a very bad year!

I think playing pool has taught me a lot about bad rolls. The entire human race just scratched on the 8 ball hill-hill playing for everything. We've learned how to accept defeat, hide away for awhile, and go right back into the arena.

I manage a group that hosts conferences, events and training for the oil and gas industry. Needless to say, we're in a tight spot right now.

Having said that, we're part of a much larger (15,000 person) company and Senior Management is doing all the right things to minimize the impact on the rank and file. We're going to lose a % of the company in the coming weeks/months but it won't be anywhere near as bad as some will face.

I've been doing a lot of thinking recently about what's important in my life and have come to the conclusion that work/money/career - they're important under normal circumstances, but these aren't normal circumstances.

I have a 6 year old boy with developmental and medical challenges - my only goal is to keep him safe throughout this. If he's OK, then I'm OK - the rest is secondary and I'll figure it out. He's what matters.

Please dont think i am being conceited or saying i am invaluable because i know any one can be replaced. Its just that he realizes i am not afraid of hard work and have given suggestions that has helped him out and has stood by him when times were tough.

I have worked with him longer than anyone he has ever had....8 years. I stood by him when times were slow and we were not working but 15-20 hours a week when other guys quit. It was so slow one time that he called me saying he had a couple jobs come up.but had to wait until he recieved money from his last job so he would have money to pay me. I ssked if he had enough momey to run on to do these jobs. He said yea. I said lets go do them and you pay me when you get paid .i said i would rather work and make something and wait on it instead of sitting home and not making anything. Floored the hell.out of him when i said that.

He used to hire someone with a back hoe or excavator when he needed digging done . i taked him i to renting what we needed when we needed it and i woukd run them. It saved him a lot of money and got jobs done faster. He now takes on bigger jobs that he used to turn down before i started working for him.

When times got better he showed his appreciation by paying me extra when ...bonus i should say...or even paying me for a full week when i was a few hours short.

In other words he treats me like a person instead of an employee number. On the occasion i show up late on monday morning he says....another late night at league huh ? If i decide i want to take off a day he has no problem. But i always make sure its not a day when he needs digging done because i am his only operator....matter of facf i am the only operator he has ever had ...as i said ...he used to sub that work out but now realizes he can do it much cheaper now..

One suggestion that has really saved him money is using the contractors be works for equipment ...sometimes for free and other times at a steep discount over rental places.. Last week i used a john deere 410 backhoe for 3 days that the contractor lets us use for free ..

A couple years ago i came up witb that idea. Told the boss...they have mqchines sitting on the job...see if they will let us use one when they are not using them . i told him.they may let you use it for free or at least charge you a lot less than a rental suply.. That has saved him a lot of money and the contractor is happy because we get the jobs done faster.. As you may guess ...he is a small time sub with 4 employees now.. He only had one plus himself wben i started.. Now he does not do physical work like he did when i started.

My 10 table pool room and grill has been closed down for 10 days now. All we have remaining is a small volume of takeout orders amounting to $400-$500 a day, as we are in a rural location and most of our regular eating customers are no longer working. We are operating now with a total of two employees (chefs) working one at a time, about 25 hours a week each. That is the extent of our payroll right now as I just can’t afford to keep any waitresses, as all they would be doing is taking orders and ringing out customers when they pick up their orders, which myself, as owner and manager am currently doing from 11 AM until 8 PM 6 days a week. This is certainly not what I envisioned doing at age 63 in my dream pool room, but just trying to survive until we can get through this.

My Job is over in a day or 2 and unfortunately I've been sick the last 2 days so quarantined at home. The worse part of it is the company I work for has lost all of their work till September and that's only a few weeks IF they still have that contract. GF also lost her job a week ago and is pursuing a lawsuit against them.

Should be a fun summer lol.

I will probably find work but I'll have to travel, possibly taking her with to do similar work. Could be a win win except for not being able to get out of my lease till September.

Btw, probably sick due to the site I'm at taking NO precautions whatsoever with a couple thousand people on site

In this bill the length of unemployment benefits would be increased to 39 weeks from 26 and there could be subsides of up to $600 a week added (this part I didn't fully understand). This plus the $1,200 per adult and $500 per child has to help. A family of four would get $3,400 in one lump sum. The checks are supposed to start going out on April 6. Whether there will be a second round of payments is unclear.

There are provisions to help out small business's as well, with low interest loans to keep them afloat. I know all this will make a huge difference in the community where I live, with lots of blue collar workers.

Right now in California fully 50% of people who have tested positive have been between 18 and 49! I corrected my earlier numbers. The assumption that this is only a disease attacking the elderly is dead wrong!

Take care of yourself dude! I know you're strong as a horse but you want to ride this one out at home.

It's not your fault. It's obvious to me that no society was prepared for a highly contagious, deadly pandemic and what it would do to society. Even our legal contract force majeure clauses, which mention natural disasters and war, say nothing of pandemics. This kind of thing is so incredibly stressful to the investment industry. Besides the market losses, when wealthy people lose money in the stock market, they stop discretionary spending and it hurts the economy.

For those who would like to know, Eric knows his stuff. He advised me to buy Apple after the 2008/9 meltdown, before it took off again. I asked him for investment advice at that time and he said "Just Apple, buy it and hold it. The only advice I will give you is buy Apple!" Eric was right and I made some money on that tip before I sold it too early in order to ease out of tech. And he's careful, always advising me to put stop losses on my holdings.

Investors are not trained to sell or advise people to sell because betting against the stock market has been a long term losing strategy. Also, when it goes up you really have to be in it or get left behind. Usually these markets bounce back in months, not years, but these sort of declines, which was an avalanche of selling, wipe out margin buyers and leveraged funds who typically get multiples of the actual gains or losses and have to cover losses with cash reserves.

I don't think too many people saw this large of a crash, although there were a small few who predicted it. The problem is we hear these doomsday scenarios wrongly so many times, we turn a deaf ear to crash predictions. This next week or two should form a bottom and maybe the selling will stop, but we need some good news first. We need progress against the illness. We need a glimpse of life as we knew it a month ago. We need to know our financial system is on solid ground. We need faith. The first quarter is all red ink and I think everybody expects the major write downs and dividend cuts coming. The weaker companies will be broke.

I hope we learn from this how to be better prepared for the next one. If we can hang on and keep our cool, there will be sunny days ahead. Hang in there Eric! Your skills, experience, knowledge and wisdom are needed now more than ever.

I have followed the markets for 25 years as an investor and as a very engaging hobby. I can tell everyone on this site that there is indeed a magic bullet to inexpensive, time guaranteed successful, simple investing strategy. If you are anywhere between 18 and 55 years old just contact Vanguard and invest ALL of your investable dollars in the Vanguard TOTAL U.S. Stock market Index- and then leave it alone until you HAVE to start mandatory IRA withdrawals at age 72. if you are over 55 just invest 60% of your funds in the Total US Stock Market Index and 40% in the Total US Bond Market INDEX.

All of this is at the lowest cost possible- from Vanguard, and you need never do another thing except rebalance when you hit 55 to the 60/40 mix. it will run on auto pilot through every up and down cycle of the market and you will end up with the best relatively risk free return any market strategy could possibly provide and due to its low cost- KEEP most of your money!

For the moment, those who have lost jobs will get a bump of $600 ABOVE their regular weekly state unemployment benefits, thru June 30; and, based on 2018 or 2019 tax return income reported, possibly get several thousand in a direct payment from the FEDS. Small business can get 4 months of GRANT money from the FEDS to use of payroll, rent, etc. - so at least some help is on the way.

I just got this in from Alessandro at Becue - they're doing OK.

Dear Chris,

Sorry for the late reply. Are very complicated days. In this moment Italy is shut down untill April 3. Yesterday was the last day we can work all together in the company, so we tried to send all items possible to our customers. We think the forced closure will last until April 15. Until this moment we will be able to work with reduced staff so we've pushed a lot these days to give our customers the best possible.

We are ok thanks, me, my family and all Becue staff. We took from the beginning of the emergency very several precautions.

About the case I'm very happy of you feedback because we invested a lot of time in research and tests for it. It's engineered, designed and tested in Italy but it's made in India from an Italian company which has a production branch there. It's calf nappa yes.
Thanks for your support in this hard moment. I love your Ducati! you have a piece of art! Now two with the cue :)
Stay safe my friend!

Ciao
Alessandro

No one has made the assertion that this disease only attacks the elderly. But the Elderly are way more at risk OF DEATH than the young, that's why it's imperative that the elderly take the most precaution, and that we keep it out of assisted living / nursing homes.

Hey folks,

I've been a lurker on these forums for years - a hobbyist pool player with more respect for the game than talent for it. I've enjoyed the chatter, from advice to banter, but nothing that really inspired me to post anything. I don't really need a custom cue as my game is NOT that sophisticated, but i was drawn back to these forums trying to glean advice for building a Schmelke cue...simply because, in these trying times, i want to support an American small business that a lot of you folks seem to have a ton of respect for. Ultimately, i ended up on this thread.

I have to say, seeing the way you guys look out for each other and encourage each other - irrespective of creed or station in life - has been one of the highlights of this period of isolation for me. Just goes to show where there is a genuine, caring community, you are never REALLY isolated.

YNWA,

Welcome to being a member, glad you joined. If you have lurked here then maybe you have seen the Schmelke threads here that have gone over what others have done when ordering from this company. Many happy players have bought their equipment from them.

Agreed with prior...welcome.

We are definitely a family; good, ad and everything between!
