The WWYD Thread...

In all my attempts I never threatened the side pocket. In fact I felt it so unlikely standing over the shot that the possiblity wasn't more than slightest blip on my radar. I'm supremely confident that I can determine that a sewer isn't on, then Filler would have come to the same conclusion much faster.

I have zero doubt his decision to play the combo was just a means to finish the rack faster with what should have been a simple combo, even by my standards. The path he choose to get their was foolhearty and it bit him in the ass. I don't think I could have put the CB in a worst spot than he did for that combo.
Nothing wrong that I can see with the shape he left himself for the combo. No, it wasn’t dead in, but do you really think a slight back cut is a problem for a player of his level? His only error was in hitting it slightly too hard, which made the pocket play just tight enough to rattle it out when hit at that pace and just slightly off.

Agreed. His win/loss ratio is so high, he does not expect to miss that 9 ever.

I'm going to out on a limb and say yes...lol. At least the miss recorded on video has me thinking so.

Sorry, don't mean to be a smart a$$...

In the spirit of the WWYD (getting on the 2) thread, (and not wanting to highjack it) I thought I'd give generating an ongoing discussion of various shots a try.

I was just watching the latest 'Earl commentated' Billiards Network video. An EuroTour match between Filler and Kazakis. In the first few racks Filler makes some odd choices imo. This particular one jumps out to me because it illustrates how opting to play lazy shape on a would be easy combo can bite you in the ass. (aka the fore mentioned thread)

Personally, I would use running english, play two rails and go short side on the 7 and play it into the corner Filler is shooting from.

Here's what Filler does.
https://youtu.be/22iHov8h604?t=2179

After watching this I went down to the table with the screen shot. Set it up, and got on the 7 short side in all my three attempts. Each of the 3 attempts had the 3 ball off the top rail by small varying amounts.

What would you do...?

I'd hit a stun/punch shot cueing at 3 o'clock, hitting the long rail past the side and go into the 7 from behind. He'll have 4 too 5 different pockets to shoot at. It lays natural to go into the 7 with r/h spin. Filler is the best at ''punching'' his cue ball.

Play conditions and crowd humidity change as play progresses, combo's have allot more going on, than when the balls and tables are clean and in the beginning of an event, Especially on the weekends when the room/arena is packed.

Interesting...bill chose the shot I proposed in the other thread, I do believe.

Honestly... I don't think that works out. The 5 is center table and punching the CB below the side pocket with right spin won't get you below the 7. You might be able to run into the 7 but I don't see how you keep the CB below the 7 without kicking it up table.

A theory that needs physical experimentation.

Edit: Lol... Just reread Bill's post and it does indeed seem like he's suggesting to punch the 7 up table. Interesting approach... I definitely don't have the necessary faith in my good fortune to come out good on that shot.

Filler is supposed to get out here, either the combo or playing position on the short side of the 7. He probably played the shape he did because there is a much greater margin of error than coming in behind the 7, which is a little tight. I would expect most pros to make this position or combo most of the time. He just messed up.

Above....past the side

I'll give it a try this am, and let yah know.

6:15 am....at best cue ball want's too scratch in the side or possibly clip the outside of the seven, does not want to go two rails then a third rail behind the seven.

It is basically a natural 3c shot and a path a seasoned player is very well acquainted with.

Of course, it does violate more than one general precept, but shit, you only live once!

Ahh... I'm thinking we just have varying opinions on the layout of a table. Filler is shooting the 5 at the top of the table (above head string). To hit the long rail "past the side" he'd be hitting below the side pocket.

I'm sure we're on the same page..., I think...lol

I thought to rack end (foot) was where the 5 was...not that it changes much aboooot what I've opined.

After shooting this shot, and not yet looking at the video, I would of thought Filler would of drawn his ball up table, with some inside spin....then looking at em shoot it, that's what he did. When I set up the shot, the 9 Was very close to the hole and I did like his choice. He didn't want to over amp his draw shot to the combo, he made sure he avoided running into the the ball in the middle of the table.

Did you give punching the CB passed the side pocket a try...?

Curious on the outcome.

I'm back on the road so I can't give it a try myself

Yep, Whitey wanted to scratch in the side, or slightly clip the outside of the 7 at best, was not able to get a 3rd rail behind the 7.

The higher percentage shot is the combination. If Filler had hit it softer at pocket speed it probably would have fallen.

I'd have probably gone one rail with inside to get shape but either way the combination is the higher percentage shot than trying to get short side on the 7 up table.

agreed... smart shot is shape on the combo. I'm just not terribly smart...lol To be clear, I didn't mean to take Filler's approach into question. It just wasn't what I'd do, and I was curious if others would handle it in similar fashion.

And he is not always a great guide for shot selection, for us mortals. He's playing a different game.

Anybody ever see the youtube vids of non-pro driver in F1 car?

skip the buildup (could be describing playing Filler, lol):
