There was an open air version of one of these in Exxon USA when I worked there. It was built in the early 1900's I believe. The paddles on the one I saw were maybe sixteen by eighteen inches or a little bigger, quite small! There wasn't a whole lot of gap between them either. It went from one level to the next in a unit in the chemical side of the plant best I recall. I looked at it many a time contemplating riding it. Always chickened out! Seemed like a lot of bad things could happen and Exxon would fire contractors in a heartbeat! Thought Trump was tough on TV? Exxon: "You are fired, ... and take your arm with you as you go!"

According to this, there are no known examples in the U.S.

Kinda splitting hairs. The lift in Exxon is open which makes it a belt lift rather than a patermaster although they say in the article that the open lifts are often called patermasters also.

Of more interest is the name patermaster. That is the latin for "Our Father", the start of the prayer. You get ready to climb into that puppy, "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, ...

What could possibly go wrong?!
The so called pater nosters are fun though. During an excursion in the 4th grade to the WDR (one of the main public free TV and radio stations in Germany), we were allowed to use it with our guide, but none of us dared take the full round over the top floor 😂
Nowadays they are only allowed in buildings with few external guests and specially certified personnel.
