Shaft on eBay

I’ll bet Schmelke will make you a matching shaft for just a little bit more. I think they usually charge $60-70 for an extra shaft?
I checked with Schmelke.
A 12.75 MM shaft is $70 and I have to send the butt to them and pay shipping both ways.
And wait 2 to 3 weeks.
Too much trouble for a back up shaft.

Once I bought one of those cheaper shafts on eBay to use on a bar table break cue of mine- to me, kind of a waste of money bc after a short while the ferrule breaks down and all the bad lathe work shows it's ugly face. I would not touch one again.

Look at the J&J spare shafts. I bought one as an extra and as amazed at what 40bux got me. http://www.jjcue.com/jjcues_shafts.htm Good wood and dead straight.
I looked at shafts from J&J but I did not like their ordering system.
You send them an e mail with what you want and someone calls you to get your credit card information.
Probably nothing wrong with that but I am a bit leery.
So I ordered the shaft from eBay.
I just felt more secure doing it that way.

I've used them before. No issues.

Looks decent, if that's what you're really getting. Also, .840 is very close to most joint sizes. Cheap, not even a decent dinner. I would say go for it. If it doesn't work out, you have a stick to hit the dog or the wife with.

All the best,
WW

That reduces the sellers risk of having an online presence- no (surely reduced ) financial transactions are conducted on the web.

On order now so it doesn't really matter. I notice that there is no insert in the shaft so it will move balance back just a little ways, probably not noticeable. The other thing is that you have to be sure the joint is tight with those wooden threads. No big deal, I am in the habit of checking my cue for being tight anyway because if I store it upright I back off a couple turns.

The joint collar is seemingly deliberately a few thousandths small. That will be unnoticeable after a little play.

If you feel like it, it would be nice to get a review after you have had the shaft awhile.

Seems I didn't post my review after writing it, now it's gone.
Probably should not have done it while drinking Bourbon.
Well anyway it's a good shaft for $60.

Thanks! I know all about those long brilliant posts disappearing into the ether. I can usually recover the lost post but not always!

The people that were here before me left some well stocked cabinets and told me welcome to the contents. Been awhile since I have drank but I get tempted now and then. May have to do a little inventory one day. I used to have a little more than a passing liking for a swallow of whiskey come the evening hour.

Whiskeys too rough, Champaign cost too much...Vodka puts my mouth in gear.
As a matter of fact, I like beer.

Tom T certainly spoke for a lot of us in his songs! My stomach did me a good turn by getting to where it couldn't stand whiskey before my liver gave out. Last few times I drank whiskey I could just drink a shot or two and smell it for three days! Biloxi Boy said it well too, I liked whiskey and women, neither liked me. I found that the word alimony really is a shortened way to say "all my money!"

Speaking of shafts on E-Bay, they have bundles of carbon fiber shaft blanks that can be had for $30-$50 dollars apiece in the raw, just a CF profiled tube. If I still had my shop it would be mighty tempting to play with a few blanks. An interchangeable joint adapter on one end, an interchangeable vault plate/ferrule on the other end, a little foam in the middle, and anybody could play with a CF shaft for a few hundred dollars or less. I was expecting CF prices to come down to a few hundred dollars or less instead of soaring. Have to see what happens post Covid I guess.
