Atlantic City allowed poker in their casinos beginning about 1992. That’s about when I started playing pool, but I didn’t start going to a serious room until about 1996 or 1997. I heard from all the Philly locals that had been around for a decades and I became friends with (in the late 90’s) that all the action moved from the pool rooms to the casinos as soon as the poker rooms opened.
So instead of the money circulating among pool players, it went to big Corporations and never returned. I think a guy named Popcorn was it was the only real success story in Poker from the Philly pool scene-at least in the beginning. I heard from a member of the poker community that 95% of all poker players go broke at least once or twice a year and have to get staked to get going again.

Better than being a pool player and being broke all year

I don't think there is much difference-I know a guy who had a little real estate empire and one by one lost them all in about 4 years at the Poker tables. He may have kept the one he lives in but i bet he has a reverse mortgage on it.

I would call that "false prestige" honestly... Anyone that's been to Vegas more than once has been there done that, and sure there's a wow factor the first time out, but that pretty much it.
I'm probably the wrong person to be blathering on this (among other things) but I don't get the allure.

At least in the 70s and 80s when it was still predominantly controlled by "Friends of Ours" they knew how to draw in customers -- cheap rooms, low priced buffets, $4.99 steak dinners, gamble enough they'll throw you show tickets or comp you a nice meal. Since the mega corporations like MGM and Adelson have come in the prices on everything have not only gone up but they nickel-dime you to death -- and people can't stop lining up to go. They really buy into the allure of the whole “what happens in Vegas…” nonsense.

If you’re going to fork out money for airfare, pricey food and hotel rooms that are now as expensive as any place else I’d rather go to the Bahamas.

Atlantic city might be cheaper this year.
With the drought going on out west, a glass of water will cost $32.00! $50 with ice!

My first series of Vegas trips happened in the mid 90's for me during BCA worlds, and there was still the cheap buffets, $1 beer at WestwardHo, and comp'd everything you could imagine if you were betting consistently enough.

I've never used 'Atlantic City' and 'enticing' in the same sentence. This 'marina district' was not in play when i was there so maybe its nicer. Couldn't be any worse.
Well, yes, it could. It could be like Asbury Park (a ways north) in the 1970s. The area near the tournament was mostly vacant lots with just the foundations of former houses sticking out. And then there was Hurricane Belle. On the other hand it was memorable.(y)

Does anyone know how to sign up? Or whether there are spots left? I'd like to play but can't tell looking at their website.
Last time you could sign up on the Matchroompool website. I think a deposit ($250?) was required. It was also possible to qualify in about 50 qualifiers. The basenote says that they will announce details in a few weeks.

The last time it was held, things were normal, more or less. Things now are not normal.

Last time there were some no-shows including one player who was signed up as a joke by his friends, evidently. If you happened to be at the venue you could put your name on the waiting list and probably would have gotten to play. I think they had some forfeits in the first rounds because they weren't able to fill in the missing players.

If you want to see how quickly signups went in 2019, here is a whole thread about them. (Please note that the links in the thread are mostly broken now.) I think it was full a couple of months ahead.

Has anybody noticed that the US Open 10 ball and US Open 8 ball have been scheduled for September 12-18. Obviously we will reschedule, but we were planning on having many players in Vegas following the CSI pro events. I have often scheduled events around other events. I find it disheartening that MatchRoom didn’t even bother to notify us. I believe Barry Hearn (at his hall of fame induction) stated the industry needs to work together. The only losers in all of this is the pool players.

Pretty much all the strip hotels are now charging high resort fees and equally high parking fees that amount to over $50/day in hidden charges. It's a litte softer downtown but no freebies there either. My answer - Motels! I vote with my wallet.

Promoters/organizers really do need to have some sort of 'sit down' to smooth out these scheduling snags. Some sort of heads up would be nice.

They have no choice. They have to charge the exuberant fees. They are passing the cost of high taxes, levies, and utilities onto the consumer. They are just trying to support their families and survive.

His name is Cornflakes. He was a top Philly pool player, who specialized in Back Pocket 9 ball. A bit under the actual pros like Jimmy Fusco of the time. In poker, for some reason I think his nickname changed to Johnny World or something like that. I remember someone in the pool room that knew him well came in one day in the early 2000's and said "Flakes just won 400k at a poker tournament." I think he even had a newspaper article about it, but I might be imagining that part (maybe it was a printout of an online article). He came out of pool retirement about 5 or 6 years ago and played Orcullo a couple sets of back-pocket. It was streamed, I think it was at the DCC but I can't remember for sure. Flakes got a spot, I think a front to a back, and the 9 ball was frozen to the middle diamond of the end rail. Flakes ended up winning.

As for the hotel cost, you can stay at Harrah's for five nights at $138 per night for two queen beds. That includes all taxes and resort fees and other unspecified fees. The listed rate is $90 before the add-ons. I think that price ($138) is reasonable.

The catch is that you arrive on Sunday and leave on Friday for five days of viewing. If you want to see the finals on Saturday, the room will cost about $300 for Friday night and heaven help you if you stay over until Sunday to take a flight Sunday morning. Sunday-Sunday is a total of $1400 for the hotel, more or less, to see the whole thing with a comfortable timing margin for travel.

Other hotel options:

The Sunset comes in at about $85 per night and a rating of 5 out of 10. Perhaps they also rent by the hour.

I've booked the Courtyard by Marriott for $757 total with fees for seven nights. It has good reviews and free cancellation until the day before.

It’s obvious Harrahs was interested in getting the US Open after seeing the success of the 2018 Tornado Open…………………..
What was the deal on the Tornado Open. I know there was some scandal but forgot what it was all about and who or what was involved.
Where can you go then? The Waffle House?
The Horseshoe has you "hostage" since there are no restaurants for 15 to 20 miles away. The food was way overpriced and not very good.

Huh? Were these events even listed on your own website? https://www.playcsipool.com/events.html

At pool the standard method for avoiding conflicts between major tournaments is by each event getting a sanction from the governing body. That reserves your dates on the calendar. The WPA is the international sanctioning organization for pool. If an event wants calendar protection at the international level, it has to talk to the WPA. There are some problems with the method, but it does work. This year especially has problems as organizers are scrambling to move forward as Covid recedes.

Here is the WPA calendar. Note that it includes events like the Predator US pro tour (national level?) and Eurocup events (continental level) besides world level events.
