I use a similar method including one of those microscopes with a screen to help align the router to the A axis.
A centering scope would be a good tool for this task as well. I do not have one but it's on my list.

They have come down alot in price from what they used to be. Last used one around 1996 or so.

DZ has a really good page on his website about cameras. A good camera helps with a lot more than finding centerline of a cue. It helps getting in getting inlays centered between points.
