Players Attempting to Unionize?

Archer tried to unionize years ago, there were threads about it.
Didn't go anywhere.
That was for a specific reason.

But you are correct it never had a chance.

However it did correct the specific problem.

I can’t mention that reason as the guy is dead now and it’s all in the past. It’s not really important

I’m glad you did bring this point up.

I’m not knocking the players, if they can make things better for them self’s I’m behind them 100%. Sadly I don’t like their chances but I’m not gonna knock their effort.

Pro pool players are among the hardest working underpaid professionals in the world.

Hope your feeling fit and strong

I am reminded of the political UPA that, in my opinion, showed favoritism to players who were friends of the admin staff.

Pool is not a big enough sport to be unionized at this juncture, again, in my opinion.

How about starting out with a professional tour first and then go from there?

Pool, as a sport, needs to grow. Period. All this union stuff doesn't cut the mustard as far as I'm concerned. Again, my opinion.

It sucks what they are doing to Fedor and Kristina, but they appear to be making wine out of those sour grapes

Seen this movie before and it didn't end well. The biggest problem is that pool doesn't draw a paying crowd or big enough crowd that advertisers take notice. It's simple economics, always has been and always will be. If the PPPA overplays their hand then tournament opportunities will dry up. With that said, if they do it right then a players association can have some benefit but alas I'm afraid it will end up going as the last few times this has been tried.

Ditto dard, your post has the sound and feel of happenings of the past 30+ yrs.

Thee ONLY time the pro player$....li$tened to the tour promoter was Camel, they had MONEY.

The only way this Ball will start rolling.............. Matchroom brings in the Big Dough and rights the Ship, creates careers.

When you have the money, ALL the player$ will follow.

Wanna bet against it?

Well, he duped them
I know Joey, I called Don to see if it was OK play in a WPA event I was invited too, he told me NOT to go, so I didn't.
Only because of my peers.
From Rempe to Fleming they were ALL on board.

On a bad ship.

The PGA Tour players thought about this before and were smart enough to realize that it was a lame idea. Granted they make LIGHT-YEARS more money but its the same idea. They have an 'advisory counsel' but no union. Pool players are also independent contractors and trying to organize them is like herding cats. All-around bad idea in my book. Money is just now starting to get pretty juicy by pool standards and any attempt at unionizing would not work imo. The advisory-counsel might not be a bad idea but not a full-fledged union.

It will be interesting to hear what the impetus was to organize. I doubt it was the table rolling off. There have been various table issues for eternity on every brand. I think its more the spot shot format, which is a fundamental change to the game.

The "biggest" push I recall to organize in recent years was immediately after KT stiffed all the players after the IPT. If that didn't organize the players, strange rules and multiple table competitors surely will not. Some other smaller attempts here and there, but this one was by far the biggest since 2000 or so, from what I recall.

If I was pro player, the one issue I'd want corrected is any organization blacklisting me if I play in a competing organization's event. That is the most egregious issue in pro pool, IMO.

Pool is too disorganized to regroup and work in one direction for good of sport, and players.

People bitch about pool but do nothing to change it but flap yap.

Then you have the Big Fish with little pong called xyz league, or xyz pool promotions.

Getting big bucks for their effort, and people throwing money at em.

Big Fish eat well, and see in change to one Pool Organization. That would effect their money flow.

I'm not sure if a union is a good idea or not but I like the idea of giving the players a voice, as a whole. At the moment, the majority of the top players are unhappy with certain things and no one is listening (predator tables, short race formats, etc.). It's good to put out a unified statement from the players to the tournament directors expressing their dissatisfaction with certain things in order to promote change.

The amount of tournaments is greatly improving but the playing conditions are becoming worse.

I'd still like to know what the PPPA's definition of professional player is and how they evaluate potential applicants. Darren didn't address the question at all in that screenshot. If it's just a group of 30-50 friends that keep everything close to the vest, this good idea may go nowhere fast.

Seems pretty standard for a sport. Surprised it hasn't been done successfully already. I hope they get it right.

My competitor put his tournament and hour before mine with free spaghetti. Ours had run for 3 years. Then he offered free pool to lure my old timers on days. Now, just a few months later, he jacked his prices and I'm only open weekends.

Pool goes nowhere with douchbags like that. Plus pool players are notoriously cheap and shortsighted.
.

Competition isn't just the same kind of business down the road; it's also the other forms of entertainment out there...and there are tons to choose from.

Cutting one's own throat might not be the road to riches.
