Players Attempting to Unionize?

They tried doing this with pool players in the US and the players dumped.
As any Vegas Bookmakers...............if they will pick a side on a pool match. :) LOL

Yes that's one of my favorite pool stories. Maybe we could find a way to bet on dumping itself.

Well there is strength in numbers, a group with 500 thousand members can snag corporate advertisers, faster then group with 7000 members.

Also think with 30 second Super Boel Commercial cost to dream up, produce, and but the spot 6.5 million is what BMW spent.

But the audience is huge that view.

I really think the success was because snooker happened to fit what TV viewers wanted / responded to at that time - it wasn't a case of some ingenious trick somebody came up with to force the success, people just did the basics of implementing it well, without screwing up a good thing.

I think there are lots of reasons even snooker couldn't be like that again though - with so much media now, you can't capture a passive audience who just want to watch *something*, whatever's best from 4 TV channels. Then there are advertising restrictions for tobacco and gambling, affecting the money, fewer non-working housewives (who surprised people by loving snooker), and they'd probably be less interested in smart young men in suits than they used to be!
Great post! I think you are spot on.
Thx, but there had to be something.
It could of been the production crew of the earlier events, and the maturity of European culture that appreciates great sporting events.
US television took a big dive in the 70s and 80s with the advent of sound bites, presenters shouting at the audience, and extended commercial breaks. I can't remember the exact numbers, but the minutes per hour allowed for ads on US TV by regulators were way (WAY) higher than anywhere else and then some. Europe by comparison sometimes seems cultured even when it is anything but.

exploring Union representation can't really hurt

The reference to "Camel" takes me back, I still think its abhorrent to ban advertising on tobacco and alchohol whilst said products remain legal

Do tournaments actually produce revenue?? I hate to sound silly, but, I will: From what I see , there aint no money being made by ANYONE hosting the tournaments, HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO PAY THE PROS AND HOW CAN THE PROS EXPECT TO BE GETTING PAID WHEN THERE IS NO MONEY BEING MADE TO PAY OUT???!!! The pros passing their money to eachother via entry fees and added money IS BULLSHIT.

Our industry operates at a discounted rate, their is no RETAIL or expectations of real profits for most pool businesses, ESCPECIALLY POOL EVEN PROMOTERS!! I appreciate the idea that 714 is proposing, but I think its putting the cart in front of the horse at this point.....

I can’t speak to the full scope but based on views it looks like YouTube generates a fair amount of money.

I have no idea about the details of something like DAZN

Be one of the most popular sports in Europe where major advertising is involved, like golf is here.

One of reason Golf get some many advertiser is the demographic of golfers.

People with Money, they buy Rolex’s, high dollar cars, have money to invest, etc.

Corporate bean counters study demographics. Golfer score high.

NASCAR fans score high also.

In my opinion this is a great development, but I'm afraid it might be too early to be successful.
Since there is not enough prize money and too little interest of the broader public, pro players depent on the promoters and have little to no influence on equipment, schedules, price money distribution and so on.

As soon as a sport generates star players, a players association makes sence, since the sport relies on their stars the same way as the top players rely on the sport.

A good example is
https://www.pdpa.co.uk/ for darts players.
They have a big influence on how their professional circuit is working and they even have the financial resources to support players during illnesses or injuries or because of travel restrictions during the pandemic.

I wonder how many of you remember that there already was a PPPA. It formed in 1975-76. I wonder how many of you remember what it accomplished while it existed and what became of it.

What will the current PPPA do to improve pool as a marketable entertainment? If that is not a major goal of the organization, I don't think many other goals can be achieved.

It’s not like billiards is thriving and this threatens to destroy a cohesive league.

At this point any form of organizing at least speaks to solidarity.

This sport desperately needs infrastructure.
I agree.

But that like herding cats…..

And there’s so little money its not going to ne able to afford the necessary talent (lawyers) to come in and organize a MLB like union where the players are making millions of dollars a season each.

Who’s going to pay union dues to keep the union intact? SVB, Shaw, Europeans?

My dad had a few sayings when I was a kid I never understood. He was pretty old when I was born. Or I was a slow learner-probably both.

“People in hell want ice water”

Now I have a very deep appreciation of my dads true wisdom

Im not knocking the players, I want to see them succeed, I have always been on their side. They are my friends (I know plenty of them personally). But it’s a tall order to organize pool

Playing pool is not a profession for more than a handful of people who live in the US.

Honestly players don't have much negotiating clout, with or without a union.

Tournaments must be look at this way, when a Bar holds local tournment & says they are adding money is real or 🐂💩❓

Recall one such event were guy wiser then me said count number of total game played until event ends. Multiply $.50/game into bar box.

Then the $500.00 was added from bar box fee, and bar was in black $200.00 plus sales of food n drink.
$.50/game…..was this in the 1980’s?!

So, did the wise guy actually count every single game in the whole tourney? Probably a big difference if most of the matches went hill-hill, or many of the matches were lopsided.

No wonder some pool halls I know of push bingo more then pool. I am sure the bingo players don’t count the number of packets bought, and figure out how much money the establishment made. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Well put Robert....

that money does not hit the players pockets.....

Sometimes it does. It depends on what the content creator does with money. In the case of Matchroom's channels, I think it's reasonable to say that any profit from YouTube videos or DAZN or matchroom.live does go back to the players.
