whoa... hold on. I just skipped back into today's live feed, and happened across the explanation of the race length. Now I can't post a link with a timestamp included, but the commentator said when the Chang/Urban match was at 0-0:
"Now I have news for you... When it gets, because I wasn't too sure, because we were at hill-hill, it was 8 a piece, and then it went 9-8. It's race to 10 when it's hill-hill. ...and when it's 10 each, it's the toss of the coin."
Then he stops the explanation by pointing out some unknown player in the background.
Does that make sense to anyone...? It's a race to 9, unless you reach 8-8, and then the race 10, but if you somehow manage to both get to 10, then it's decided by a flip of a coin...? WTF...???

I will often play sets as 'win by 2' or at least offer the option at hill-hill, but the letting the other guy get to 10 and then flip a coin is madness. 8-8 changing to a race to 10, fine. But once a guy is at 10, it's done. A tie it up rack to flip a coin is just goonery.
Maybe he meant the winner of the next rack if it gets to 10-10 was the winner. So it's a 50/50 "coin flip" scenario at that point.

On the official page, you see quite a number of 9-8 results, so that doesn't support what's been said
or coin flip for the right to break in the 21:st rack
Looks like they got: Albin, Alex, Morra, Grabe, Riku, Mika, Makkonen, Filler, Thorsten, Ralf, Kazakis, Capito, Szolnoki, Oi, Omar, Bjisterbosch, Gangflot, Biado, Sniegocki, Fortunski, Juszczyszyn, Wojciech, Zieliński, Babica, Macioł, Soufi, Ko Pin Yi, Ko Ping Chung, Jung-Lin Chang, Hsieh Chia Chen, Lin Wu Kun, Hunter, and Tyler.
Hunter and Tyler lost their first matches.
I dug back into the stream further to see the match the guy was talking about.
It's a race to 9, unless you're 8-8. Then it's a race to 10. However the guy who won the flip/lag gets to break the 19th rack. ....but? this seems to be an alt break format event, so the lag winner would be breaking the 19th rack anyway...lol.
Hard to figure out the format when the guy explaining it doesn't understand it either
That still doesn't add up because many of the scores are 9-8. Hunter actually lost by 9-8. Was his match streamed by chance?
ps, win by 2 or any modified race lengths are dumb imo for a tournament. It makes it hard for the fan to know what is going on. And it takes away the pressure from the players.

I dug again.... The score lines on the bracket is probably just a product of laziness... Here's the result of the match I mentioned earlier
So listed as a 9-8 score. However, they were playing rack 18 with the same score line.
Duong actually won 10-8, but they didn't bother updating.
In 2016 someone asked when the Mosconi Cup switched to racking the 9-ball on the spot. Here's what I posted back then.
I did a quick review of past Mosconi Cup videos available on line.
It looks to me like the 9-ball has been racked on the spot at least since 2004.
For 1999-2003, the videos I could find make it look like the spot was under neither the 1-ball nor the 9-ball but in between them.
For 1998 and earlier, it looked like the 1-ball was on the spot.
So 9 on the spot has been a thing for Matchroom, at least in the MC, for a long time! The first year the US Open put the 9-ball on the spot was 2014.

These are great tournaments and I don't mind the Saudis pumping pool.
Maybe they can't update. It's possible that the software hasn't been told about the random match lengths.
Just looked over the main event brackets. Nice to see Konstantin Stepanov back out competing in events.

Talk about a coincidence here, as he's been residing in Qatar recently, as a coach for local national team. That said, most certainly there is no other chance to see Konstantin competing internationally. Like we don't happen to see Roschkowsky any longer (currently coaching team Austria).
That said, wishing him well, Naoyuki Oi is no push-over
