MOSCONI CUP 2023 AZB Watch Party / Master Thread

If anything is worth discussing its the German style of celebration by Joshua Filler as if he never made a nineball in his life.

He is the perfect pool player aloof to everything but pool, including his own team mates and the opponents.

In American sports there is a rule about not creaming your opponents. Apparently gloating is more important to Germans.

Its basically a pro paid team the Euros, versus a bunch of self funded pool players supported by their family or themselves.

Its an asymmetrical warfare.

It was a historical beat down. It should have been won today bit they cancelled matches so there would be a 4th day.

So that’s why he celebrated like he won a championship.

It will be a short day tomorrow.

If Shane had made those two balls, I don't think it would have affected the outcome of the next matches at all. That's like saying if a 700 player breaks and runs a 2 pack out of the gate in a race to 11 vs an 800 player, he's going to win the match.

Momentum can't make up for a large skill gap.

IMO:)

3. Europe gets most of the rolls, its truth..... go check it back! Whenever they make mistakes, 80% of the times they come out as roses even with mistakes, we go into a kick battle until the unlucky (usually americans) give the europe the easy shot. And please dont come at me with the "Kicking balls require skills to get safe", trust me this is only for easy kicks, like 90% of the time its about how lucky you will be after the kick so you can go back to all the misses, europe usually gets lucky twice. Because they miss and it goes safe, then the kicking battle & europe at the end will get easier shot to be back at the rack which means their mistakes usually don't cost much. He makes a mistake and miss, then come back and takes the game again.
Effect of luck diminishes in the long run, so if one side keeps appearing more lucky over and over, it is increasingly likely that they are just better at kicking/safeties/two-ways. e.g. for kicks, they are not neccessarily better at making contact, but better at reading probabilities of which part of the OB you should hit and at what speed/spin to maximize odds of smth good happening. Even a 60/40 outcome over a 40/60 repeated multiple times in a row can appear like blind luck. It's like poker, but maybe even more difficult to read the odds.

Where can I find this calculator?
FargoRate.com. There's an app and there is a calculator on the website.

But if you're good with spreadsheets, it's easy to roll your own. The math behind FargoRate is pretty simple as math goes.

People defending this team are mad because we are critical of this team.

Put it this way they had to cancel matches just so they can guarantee a 4th day for those in attendance. The cup would have been won a day early.

People don’t understand the magnitude of what’s going on but GO TEAM USA!!!! lol
Europe can be a treacherous place. It's immediately obvious the boys are off balance and might be on the wrong foot entirely. pointless adding insult.

Matchroom should realise that Pool isn't golf.

No point in Europe Vs USA like Ryder cup when the golf (intended pun) between the teams is so great and makes it pointless to watch.

Better to have East Vs West ©

A new tournament, for a new company, in a new era 💯

My opinion is the main difference is actually the quality of coaching/preparation for MC because those players CAN play under normal conditions. Dont get me wrong, I love JJ as a commentator, he is extremely knowledgable guy but he is not an instructor of Johan Ruijsink or Ralph Eckert caliber..by a country mile! Look at results Johan had at MC as a team captain both for Euro and USA (with a similar set of players)! Under Johan even SVB played great at MC and that tells something. And Ralph Eckert is at the similar level if not even better.

No Americans have emerged. That's the root issue. We've had Shane since 2007 as the top gun, SOLO. No USA kid has come close to him since. The prior generation had Archer, Strickland, Corey, Rodney, Daulton, and several others right about that speed. Now we have Shane, and no one to replace him.

In Asia and Europe there is a Filler speed kid on the horizon every 3 years. And a hair below that speed every single year.
They could have chosen Josh Robert’s or Oscar Dominguez, instead of Shane Woloford. Shane Van Boeing’s negative body language, along with shoulder shrugs and ”Oh Well” facial expressions are killing the entire Team’s confidence, and then when SVB misses an easy shot , he isn’t supporting and uplifting his teammates. Woodward deserved to play more.

What's the best tip??? ;) Seriously, its a exhibition match so relax. Anyone that even remotely follows pool knows that Europe will almost always win any big-table event. As long as the bar-box is the primary table we(US) will get beat in the MC. Hell, Poland could field their own team. It would take a sea-change in American pool for them to compete in the MC much less win more than every 10yrs.

Damn I must be old since I remembered pool halls without little tables. In the last 10-15 years they are starting to take up half the pool rooms here. It started with one row and now two rows. In another few years it will be all bar tables.

Even the casual pool players fill up the bar tables before the 9 footers. They think it’s the default size. I told someone I play on 9 foot tables and they thought that was professional size reserved for professional league players so they don’t play on it.

To think my local room wanted to make every table’s pocket tight because a couple of pool players suggested it. This will make the game harder for casuals and not fun. Good luck on them coming back.

At this rate Americans will never recover and dominate pool.

One thing nobody can take from us are the cue makers. America has the best cue makers in the world.

As much I've enjoyed reading this thread. From Shane missing in the first match , and from the 2nd match onwards America looked very flat, Shane's body language on that match, just set the tone, and yesterday fador looked under so much pressure, jj did put his best player out. To try and get a good a start.it just didn't happen.

The promoters must be having a nightmare. Trying to ensure, it goes to day 4.
If usa don't start wining more tonight, i wonder how many matches, we will see.
Whenever i watch mosconi, every year, you never know how its going to go. A bad start like that, and you wonder, what all the fuss was about. That score line, doesn't really show how good its been to watch. Just disappointing, thay couldn't handle the pressure, at key moments.

Lol... the inevitable "woe is the state of Merican pool" has come a day earlier than I expected.

-"Euros draw from a larger population"
-"Why not include all of NA"
-"Youth pool isn't supported"
-"SVB is to blame for everything bad for team USA"

Broken record guys/gals...lol

Pros fade bad shots all the time throughout their careers, but Shane's bad 9b has destroyed the hopes of team USA...?..., really..?

You need >800 players in this event. The USA is drawing from a larger population when you add up all the other >800 "Euros countries" populations. Not a ton more but more none the less.

Face it... Euros try harder, get better because of that effort and it comes to light all the more when directly compared to the USA in the event.

On the upside, the losers still get paid.

Only hope for the USA this year and years to come, lays in Emily's ability to convince the Euros to start diving. Fortunately for MR, the rest of the world will always enjoy watching the Americans getting their asses handed to them and Mericans will always glue themselves to a screen to watch for a potential car wreck. Nobody watches NASCAR for the left hand turns.
I'm just surprised you didn't mention snooker in this post

USA is country
Europe is a continent

So I dont' understand the logic......it should be

North America (continent)
Vs
Europe (continent)

It really should be. I agree with the post above.

Another rant.

1. Fedor Gorst (Using new cue) you can never use new cue on an event as big as Mosconi cup, there's zero chance that you're going to perform well, you need time to adjust to that new cue. I've heard snooker players they stick to one cue for their lifetime and some of them when they switch, they need at least a year to adjust.

2. Tyler Styler, I don't understand why they keep bringing this guy back...to me he's useless, sorry no offense but he's just subpar player compared to other pro's (Not compared to me, inbe4 someone with "go beat him").

3. Europe gets most of the rolls, its truth..... go check it back! euro fan here, but i agree with most of this. sanchez ruiz also changed cue sponsor right before the cup because that's what the sponsors want - exposure - and most likely pay extra for. ruiz hasn't played great either. otoh you can't blame pool players for trying to make a living.

we have had all the rolls and imo the score doesn't really tell the story. but such is 9-ball, luck is allowed and a part of the game.

i think shane set the standard for the US team, he is the leader whether he wants it or not. even JJ looks up to him. fielding fedor, a rookie, three matches in a row was also very questionable. sky is the most clutch mc player and should have played at least one of those

It’s very sad to watch the USA teams get blown off the table year after year. I do believe Matchroom is going to have to look for other countries to play the Euro teams soon.

Overall we can no longer compete and win. In a short venue momentum is huge and we haven’t been able to get out and lead in years

Our lack of depth moving forward is even more troubling..
I can't see it happening, there is a reason its referred to as '' the ryder cup of pool''
I fail to see how this makes great viewing though, you just feel for the americans.

I used to be a euro fan, but im kind of neutral now, after watching these for so long now. i just want to watch a well played event. With both sides going at it. I wish more guys are like filler, and really enjoy the pressure. You can see its tough to deal with, especially on those big shots.
