It's been the standard at pro snooker and carom tournaments for a long time. I've seen a carom player pick up his opponent's left chalk after the third abandonment and throw it at him. Not in a friendly way, either.

I just read through the rules at the link posted above. Quite a few surprises for pool players. You get credit for hitting a frozen OB if you shoot away from it and you must not shoot towards it. Absolutely no jump shots even with your playing cue. Etc.
No CB ball jump shots with your playin' cue. thx Bob didn't know that.
From the quick rules intro I saw before a match; yes - sink the 8 you win; sink it and also the cue ball (or fly it off the table); you lose

defense is allowed - intentional fouls are not. E.g. directly hitting opponents ball (on purpose) is loss of game.
They're trying to establish a national league. They seem well organized and funded, it might fly.
But for American players, some of their rules are totally goofy. Or at least, unlike anything American players are familiar with. Not even in bar rules.

From what I remember from watching the previous tournaments they actually have 2 tournaments in each event - The main event that they call the Open and a warm-up event on the first day that they call the Shoot Out. (Not to be confused with the tie breaker 6-ball shootout that could happen at the end of any match.)
They treat the 8 on the break differently in the Shoot Out than in the Open. If my memory holds, the 8 on the break in the shoot out wins (Golden Break) and scratching and making the 8 on the break loses (Golden Duck). In the Open, the 8 on the break cannot win or lose and it is handled like this: If made on the break the 8 is spotted. Then, if the breaker made another ball he/she continues to shoot. If only the 8 was made on the break the breaker's turn is over and the opponent shoots. If the 8 is made on the break and the cue ball scratches in a pocket the opponent has ball in hand in the kitchen, but can shoot directly at any ball. If the 8 is made on the break and the cue is jumped off the table, the opponent has ball in hand anywhere.

I agree mostly with that. Or see about moving to a more Americanized version for America, Or play in spite of the fact you don't care much for the UK style rules but just deal with it anyway, Or like me, Try to get it figured out so it's easier to follow along.

how is gape owins faring?
I was able to go for a few hours today.
Did not see the Gape or Matlock. But I did rub elbows with many top players.
Too much fun, so cool for Colorado.
I enjoyed a lengthy visit with Island Drive while I was there.
Overall this effort seems like more style than substance with a bunch of lower level pros pillow fighting on bar tables with a hokey rule set, but you have to acknowledge UP is pumping out sharp and professional looking content.
