Derby Action

I can't comment on the Executive West, I've never been. For the current location, I went I think 5 or 6 times. Each time the fields grew bigger and bigger, and slowly the "action room" became smaller and smaller. The legit pros are all in a super grind with all the events they are in. They usually don't have time anymore to gamble. The first or second year I went was the year Dippy Dave was there, playing all of his "qualified" players.

I think gambling in general is just dead all over, and it's mostly tournaments now. I was at Pat's Intl Open last year, which had plenty of tables and time after the tournament finished each night. I didn't really see any action of note. On a local level, there are tournaments everywhere and every day now. But as soon as a player gets knocked out, they now go home, instead of sticking around to match up. Also, most local tournaments are now double elimination, which means the players and tables are occupied much longer. In the older days, they were all single elimination, which led to action, IMO.
I went in the early 2000's twice to the Executive West. There was a lot of continuous action then at various levels and it was fun as side bets were often available. Does anyone remember Lynn's Paradise Cafe?
I have not been to the Derby since it moved to a casino. I've noticed the action at Super Billiards Expo has fallen off by a whole lot over the last several years too.

Apparently I didn't read his comment as well as I should have. The thing I was replying to was how we handled our own issues and all that. Noone does that anymore for obvious reasons, but when we were younger, we were dumber. 😂
Yep, I'm not losing my job over not getting paid. Make em post and if they refuse to pay the last set and grab the $$$ off the light 🤷‍♂️ I'm not losing a 200k/job over it

gambling in pool has been on a downswing for many years and will continue. the newer generation is no longer interested in it. they play games on line and do other things for stimulation. and few could or do earn their living gambling live.

many that are faster thinking and have the stomach for bigger swings, have moved on to poker and done well. the stakes are much larger and you can always be in action against people worse than you. it is a no brainer if you can win there.

I've barely hit balls for 15 or more years, poker is much better

In the 'practice' room at DCC in '07 i saw two guys playing 9b races-to-3 for 8thousand. Folks, that's ACTION. Don't see anything like that anymore.

Never have to give a spot. Quit when you want.

generally don’t have to woof for a game. I guess in private or cultivated games or whatever they’re called you have to do more image cultivation/sales etc… but I am a legal, public game player only. Not that I play much at all anymore and I’ve never been a high stakes player. But I like being able to sit at a game and gamble pretty much hassle free. Get paid when you win, quit when you want or the game changes for the worse, and get beverage service.

exactly why most pool player gamblers have moved to or tried to be poker winners. those that cant are still primary pool gamblers.

poker became the easy big money all though it always was. but tv made it big time and average players were able to make significant money for a few years.

We've all got a lot more to lose now. Took us long enuf to build it. No sense in risking even a small part over stupid shit like that. That was then. This is now.

I can agree with that, I done it for years and do not miss the nonstop woofing with nothing happening. Also the not being able to quit when you want (especially after adjusting from the original game) is absolute nonsense.
