Matchroom/U.S. Open is leaving Atlantic City

I like this if it's true, but knowing MR and traveling with employees.
But someone mentioned TX.
Then
I wish they'd hire US Refs to help out with this American event instead of flying all their refs over here, use the great ones we already have, some have been refereeing over 50 yrs.

They did use two of the proven veteran American referees at the US Open in Jon Leyman and Ricky Bryant.

I was under the impression that most of the refs used for the events are local, other than a few special exceptions like Marcel.

No, although I don't know all their names, one of the semifinals and the final were refereed by Matchroom's referees. American Jon Leyman refereed one of the semifinals, too.

On the other hand, many of the area referees used for the first four days (until 16 were left) were American referees. Each area referee was responsible for four tables, officiating (on player demand) and racking the balls for all four of the matches.

I was happy when they first announced that the event was moving to Atlantic City, which is less than a three hour drive for me and very accessible from most of the northeast. I became less enthused when it was announced that the tournament was heading to Harrah's, probably the second saddest casino there behind Bally's (which feels like it closed 20 years ago and no one bothered to tell anyone. Hell, I think Atlantic Club might be a step up and it's been abandoned since 2015). I feel like we might have felt differently about this experience had they partnered with Borgata, Tropicana or Hard Rock -- which received a $500 million renovation when Seminole acquired the hotel.

The rumor going around at the Open was that it would be in San Antonio next year. Might a rumor actually be true? Stay tuned. We're already in the state.

Houston in August? Nah.
Austin? Average high temp in August is 97. It's a dryer heat.
San Antonio? About the same as Austin for heat. I lived there for two and a half years. 80 one midnight in January.
How about Corpus Christi?

I'm guessing Dallas, if it goes to Texas.

It seems that there are no Vegas/AC-style casinos in Texas.

One thing I've learned about reffing.... doing a 4 pack or doing the TV table are Completely different situations.
I hope the 4Pack Refs are getting paid Good/traditionally not the ca$e.

Unless they change the month going to texas is a bad idea. i live in tulsa and that time of year is brutal hot/humid. Chicago with its pool history might be good. Anywhere but down south that time of year.If it is Texas Dallas is a helluva spot. Just crank that a/c.

On Dogginit, Mike P suggested MR has been priced out of Vegas. Corpus Christi was mentioned as possibly the frontrunner. Mike dissed Houston.

Sure seems like it is Texas or bust. Frazer has talked up Texas a number of times in the wake of Florida becoming a success. The only other state I have heard Frazer praise is Arizona.

Well zar Derby is in the middle of winter, but yeah the heat.
Why Houston/Humid/Hot are very annoying.
Central US with a good airport and the correct time of yr is needed to set this time frame permanent, so others can build around it.
The leagues have it figured out doing there thing in May, I'd say mid fall or spring are the best times for weather, just need an international airport.

Vega$.... and the E coa$t have a $imilar feel and a completely different attitude.
I'd vote for KC, the Heartland, where 1/3 of the US population seems to live within a 700 mile radius.

Yes, I've been to Dallas, Texas in the summer and it was 110 degrees. I think Houston tends to be even worse and is more humid. If the US Open goes to Texas, I hope it will return to its traditional time slot of October.

Still, I'm fine with anywhere in Texas if it is important to Matchroom to establish a presence there.

Ben Taylor-Fuente from England and Marcel Eckardt from Germany were the other referees. Marcel is a well-known snooker ref. I noticed, however, that he seems to be head referee for last event. I had thought Brendan Moore was the referee director for Matchroom Pool now. He had retired from being a snooker referee in 2023, to became referee director for Matchroom Pool at that time.

A Midwest location with good facilities, clean and financially affordable, would be great for the next U.S. Open. Texas does have a strong pool community, but August in Texas is hot as Hades.

It is also important to have the venue near airports since there will be many people, hopefully, flying in.

I never liked Las Vegas or Atlantic City for pool events because of the distractions, and Vegas in particular has become extremely expensive. Atlantic City just ain't what it used to be, sad to say, but I do think the Harrah's venue from a railbird's view looked very nice.

St. Louis would be a good place if a venue can be located that meets all the requirements needed for an event of this size.
