These guys patently eschew big omelets (my new expression for BnR packs). All the guys on tour pass all kinds of bnrs. I think they'd rather stay in the game than blow it on glory. They will economize fuel and systematically work the opposition, picking off the inevitable gains.
Buddy Hall said he ran six (I heard one handed behind the back but that's not reliable info), ran six and who beat him?
Have no idea where this goes. I'd frankly rather string 50 racks every time I get up.
All well and good at the Texas Open, but that's not the highest level of play. As you note, on 4 1/2" pockets, it's a different, and frankly, much easier game.
As noted in another thread, combining the stats at the last two WNT majors (Arizona Open, US Open 9ball), per At Large stats, the breaker won 234 racks out of 394 racks played, or 59% of the racks played. The breaker's advantage in today's WNT nine ball is really not that great and any suggestion that players are spending many racks at a time in the chair does not hold up to scrutiny.
Again, per At Large stats at the recent US Open 9ball, at least one safety was played in 48% of the racks. There's a lot of back and forth in WNT play today, and it is because the break (nine of the spot with narrow break box) is difficult, not easy. In the 198 racks At Large tracked, only twice did a player run more than a three pack. Yes, the players can still make the one in the side, but they are finding shape on the two ball far less often than they did before Matchroom went to 4" pockets with the current breaking rules.
Its a fun game between two players. When you first arrive at the table your allowed to shoot any ball to get shape for the next lowest ball then run out like normal.
You might even have to shoot the nine in first to get shape for the one ball, nine would of course respot.

If a 6 turned out to be 9... I don't mind, I don't mind.
All of this "change this, change that" BS makes me think it is kind of like two nerds sitting down in the basement playing video games against each other and one nerd keeps losing.
The losing nerd suggests turning the TV upside down would make for a better game and make it more even.
They do it and the losing nerd finally wins a game and says, "See, I told you this was better."
Then the other nerd says, "To make it more even, I think we should put the TV on its side."
Then their blind nerd buddy shows up and suggests that they play with the screen turned off.
Game fixed.

That reminds me of a true story. Years ago, me and two of my best friends (one of whom is now deceased and one, the one in question is married to my little sister) would get together, network our computers and play counter strike.
The friend who is now my BIL would always win, but in ways that seemed insane. One time we're playing and setup at my mom's house. I was up visiting from my duty station in San Diego and I step away from my screen and see his, we were all in different rooms of the house. He was using a mod on his that made the walls all see through. So he'd use the sniper rifle and just shoot us through the walls. f%$#in cheater.
Now as it comes to pool, the changes that have been made haven't been made to make it more fair for the lesser players, or to stop cheaters like my friend, but rather to make the elite stand out more and force people to win by skill, not by luck. It's a completely different animal.

If they want the elite to stand out more, make it easier, increase the number of games in a match, make it winner break, and put a very short timer for shots and time limits for matches.
Make you play twice as many games in the same period of time.
Cut out the surveyors, stallers, table walkers, etc.
Make everyone play as fast and loose as Earl.
It seems more people watch Earl than any other player and it isn't just for him to have a meltdown.
He makes it fun to watch.
If it isn't fun to watch the game will never have a large audience.
