Realignment for Mosconi/Reyes cup events

Once upon a time the USA had so many elite players for the event to be fair it had to be USA versus all of Europe. It’s obvious even to the most casual observers that the script has flipped. I think that you could have a team made up of polish players that could comfortably defeat an American team. I think the same holds true for Germany, the UK and maybe even Spain. On the Reyes end of things you could put together an all phillipino team that could beat anyone. Why not subdivide these teams and make it more of an international competition where teams represent their own country kind of like soccer World Cup.

Like the World Cup of Pool?

I think seeing a full five-person team from each country competing in a tournament with each match a similar style to the Mosconi/Reyes Cups would be amazing. Doubles doesn't have quite the same apoeal.

In 2010 there was the World team championship that was close to an international Mosconi, I don't think they had another after that, don't know why, it was a great event

Some decent ideas but you don't see MR point of view: they aren't worried abut selling true competition but rather a made-4-tv/stream sideshow. The 'competition' part of the MC is totally awol the last 10+ yrs and MR couldn't care less.

Was that a Matchroom event? How many per team?

Now I remember it vaguely. About 43 teams of 4 to 6 players, male and female, playing 8, 9, and 10 ball, a WPA event, $400k in prizes. Great Britain won the final over the Philippines: https://www.azbilliards.com/great-britain-wins-world-team-championship/
It was certainly very global with a lot of countries not represented even in Matchroom's current large events.

I assume it didn't repeat for lack of funding.

Mosconi and Reyes Cups are established brands, perhaps needing of some tweaking but not requiring overhaul.

FYI, there are now two WPA world team championship events. One is the WPA World Team Championships which was played in February, with each country fielding a team of two men and one woman. It was a great event and Team Philippines outlasted Team Poland to win the title. This past week brought the WPA Men's Doubles Championship, essentially a relaunch of the World Cup of Pool. On this occasion, Team Spain topped Team Philippines for the title.
