Dumping - caught

AZBilliards encourages discussion and will allow even questions AZers can't answer. Many AZers are anonymous and could include Thomas Haas and Joao.

I'm guessing there is little money for players in Haas-Joao-like games except from gambling.

Viewing the Haas v Joao match on YouTube that lasted over three hours was underwhelming. There must have been a scorekeeper but was there even a referee? I didn't notice an audience and no one there likely paid an admission fee. I doubt YouTube paid them much if anything. I doubt Haas and Joao got money from a sponsor.

Gambling is a problem in sports but it is even more of a problem if players rely on it to get paid.
Didn't read any of the inapplicable nonsense that followed the inappropriate insertion of forum defined.

You asked where they get their money.

I think, amongst civilians, pool has a pretty seedy reputation, going back to at least when Eddie Felson got his thumbs broken.

But in all the years I’ve been playing I have see very little violence between players, sweators, and backers. The threat has often been there but virtually no motion. Has there been the ocassional drunken episode amongst bangers, sure. But between players I’ve seen almost nothing. Basically the money is too small. But one of these days one of these yahoos is going to go a little too big with the wrong guys and regret it.

The pool halls you hung in must have had carpet on the walls and served food. Where i grew up if you did that for ten dollars you would have feared for your limbs to stay intact.

In my day, dumpers who got caught got hurt......BAD! Some took beatings and one or two did not get out alive. A famous Filipino player from the Parica era (it was said he played as good or better than Jose) was executed for dumping the wrong guy.

That would be the guy in the Grisham book?

While you're here, was Hollywood Billiards in the same building as a band rehearsal studio?

Yes, same guy. Bing or something like that. I heard all about him. Supposedly better than Efren. Hollywood Billiards was downstairs in the basement of a multi story building. I don't know what all was on the upper floors. For a short period of time there was a second pool room on the ground floor. The house man (Bob) at Hollywood Billiards hustled me to play one time when I took my little daughter with me to teach her some pool. I was not a regular there, but lived not too far away. We played Eight Ball (his choice) for ten a game. When Seymour closed at about 2 AM we went upstairs and continued our game, my little daughter curled up asleep in a chair. I played this guy until about 5 AM when he finally quit. I must have beat him for 200 at ten a game. He was stubborn.

When I took my daughter back home the next day (I had visitation) she told her mom she watched me play pool all night. My ex went totally off on me for that one. I tried to tell her it wasn't my idea but the guy hustled me. I could never turn down a game!

Somehow got it in my head you owned the place. Lol. Thanks for clearing that up.

Boy...thats quite the story 🤫

its a moral issue for some and doesn't need to be.

when in a gambling game you need to do that. do you think in a poker hand you need to tell your opponent that you have a great hand and he should'nt call your bet.

or the pitcher in a baseball game shouldn't pretend he is throwing a fastball and make it a curve.
or in foot ball do they need to let the other team know where they are passing to.
Poker is not a game of perfect information. W/r/t pitches, baseball is not a game of perfect information. W/r/t play calls, football is not a game of perfect information. Hidden information is an inherent part of the game.

Pool is a game of perfect information. Played honestly, each player has exactly the same information about the table, layout, etc. It is similar to chess, except pool has an element of execution proficiency to go along with the element of strategy.

Would you consider it morally/ethically acceptable for a chess grandmaster to pass themselves off as an amateur player of average skill in order to fleece unsuspecting players?

The whole ordeal seems analogous to two people conspiring over text to steal illegal drugs from a drug dealer.

There might have been laws broken, but without immunity deals, getting victims to testify instead of pleading the fifth ("No person … shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself" for those outside the USA) would be next to impossible. What are they going to say under oath? "The illegal betting in which I engaged was not on the up and up."? Successful prosecution would be difficult, to say the least, even if prosecutors actually cared that illegal gamblers were defrauded. If anything, the prosecutor would be more inclined to offer the dumpers immunity in exchange for testimony against the backers.

On the other hand, assuming the phone was passcode protected, the unauthorized access to the phone would be comparatively easy to prosecute. The ex-GF's mother looks at least as bad, morally and ethically, as the dumpers.

Smart businesspersons price counterparty risk into any contract into which they enter, whether that contract is written or verbal, legal or not.

they have the same info about each other if they chose to do the due diligence. if a player asks me to play for money i have no obligation to tell him i am better. or even if i am and ask for a spot. its gambling. you try to get the best of your opponent without cheating.

what is cheating is in each owns mind. especially from the ones that lose all the time.

if a chess master is in the park where they are gambling and asks someone to play and they say how good are you. he says not that good. whats wrong about that. they guy that asked didnt volunteer his rating.

if you are not a gambler dont gamble. and if you do expect to lose. and blame yourself for being stupid, if you gamble with a stranger you take your chances.

Aside from the grandmaster blatantly lying?

Lying may not be, in and of itself, illegal, but it is considered by most reasonable people to be both immoral and unethical.

not in gambling, or politics, or military, or teachers in school, or your parents telling you there is a santa claus or easter bunny. and you look handsome,
and what your priest about things up in the sky. and almost every single advertisement you see on tv.
or the policeman that stops you and is allowed to lie to you and does, to get information that may implicate you in a crime.

in gambling it is customary to try to influence your adversary by deceiving him about your skill.
taking balls from his side is stealing.

Voters tend to prefer honest politicians, all else equal.
To quote the Sun Tzu, "War is deception." The goal is not to be ethical or moral when dealing with the enemy.
Lying is not an admirable quality in a teacher, nor a sign of competence.
We could get into the benefits vs detriments of the Santa Claus and Easter Bunny myths on society, especially kids, but that's for a different thread. Different site, even.
Even so-called white lies can be problematic.
The priest isn't lying if he genuinely believes what he preaches. If he doesn't so believe, he's doing his parishioners a disservice by remaining in the priesthood.
A large portion of society would consider the average police officer to be neither moral nor ethical.

Like I said, most reasonable people would consider lying to be neither moral nor ethical. I'm not suggesting that lying isn't commonplace, just that that doesn't make it morally or ethically acceptable.

I was often asked "How good are you?" When I went into a strange poolroom and asked for a game. My response was always "I play okay."
