Mosconi/Reyes/WPM rankings

Emily Frazer strikes again?

Or, did a pool player just decide their reputation is worth more than a free $20,000?
Or his business ventures. Notice he did say he would be potentially interested in future MC appearances. Perhaps he really wasn't expecting to qualify and so months ago loaded his calendar before/during the event that he wouldn't have time to practice/prepare?

He has been in the top three of the US Mosconi Cup rankings for the entire WNT year. He became a US Citizen in 2025.

He's a good friend, Jay., a fellow New Yorker whom I see on a fairly regular basis both at home and on the tournament trail. If he has reacted to any external stimulus in reaching his decision to make himself Mosconi ineligible, I doubt he'd share it as it would reflect poorly on WNT.
Maybe so. He appeared to have his mind made up well before the Philippine Open.

Pretty sad, there are only 9 American players (was 10 before Thorsten withdrew) that are even eligible for the Mosconi Cup. That means 9 (10) total players even participated in enough MR events this year. (IDK if there is a minimum earnings cutoff and if a banger like me entered every single MR event if my name would show up in this list).

Not sure if he qualified, but id rather have Burgman over Billy and Woodward.
I think most people do.

My ranking as of today would be Bergman > Sky > Billy

I know Billy is playing good right now, but I still don't think he's playing great. Even if Sky takes 17 months off or whatever, on his C game, he still shows flashes of greatness and he's not a choke artist when facing a big moment in a match.

And Bergman just has ice in his veins, no explanation needed. He would rise to the occasion at the MC, even though he didn't qualify.

Agreed 100% here, Jay. I'm sure the decision was already in place long before then.

Thorsten became a US citizen in 2025. He found himself in the top 3 Team USA Mosconi Cup rankings for virtually the entire year in 2026, so it always looked like he'd probably qualify on points, and many threads this year took note of it. Whatever the facts are here, Thorsten has, and will continue to handle it with dignity because, like Ralf Souquet, the German World 9ball Champion who came before him, he holds himself to the highest possible standards of professionalism. Still, he would have done everyone (Matchroom, Team USA aspirants, and the game's fans) a greater service if he had announced his unwillingness to accept a spot months ago.

It is a shame that fans have been blindsided twice this year in the Team USA qualification race. At the US Open 9ball two months ago, Billy Thorpe was, to his astonishment, advised just before his round of sixteen match that he was ineligible for Team USA based on an unmet participation minimum at the WNT majors. This minimum had, similarly, not been publicly announced by Matchroom, so fans were in the dark. Now, we have Hohmann declaring himself ineligible at the end of the WNT year, a second surprise. Only four managed a top ten finish in a WNT major this year (SVB, Styer, Hohmann, Gorst) and Team USA will now have to go to bat with two players that failed to have even one good tournament this year in WNT play. It is a shame.

Matchroom has always promoted the Mosconi Cup as the highlight of the pool year, the crowning event for those who, through their play, have earned a free roll at $40,000, the same amount that is typical for first prize at a Matchroom major. The Mosconi race is one of the things that keeps fans engaged during the WNT year, but the 2026 Mosconi race, from a fan standpoint, has been a blur. I hope we'll see some big improvements in 2027.

Hell no.
I would like to see no restrictions on wildcards other than an active tournament year.
The US has few pros as it is and very few who can survive meeting all the travel and participation requirements.
In MR's efforts to get more US players involved they are inadvertently limiting our options to an even greater degree.

The Mosconi Cup should probably go away. USA can't compete for at least 10 more years.

There are zero teens right now in the USA that will be top pro level. There might be some 10 year olds that haven't picked up a stick yet. I wrote the exact same thing every year for the past 10 years.

I think the Reyes Cup should be the yearly climax instead. It's actually competitive, and fans worldwide can get behind it.

The MR money list is a clusterF. There are 6 total lists to navigate:

-2 years rolling points list used for seeding
-"Prior Mosconi cup" to date list for Mosconi Cup, for both USA and Europe (2 lists)
-"Prior Reyes cup" to date list for Reyes Cup, for both Asia and ROW (2 lists)
-"Prior WPM to date" for World Pool Masters.

All should go away and just use the 2 year rolling list for everything.

The idea that the USA can't compete is laughable.

SVB, Gorst, Tyler, Sky and Bergman are more than capable of beating Europe.

All of them are 800 or close to being 800 Fargo level players.
There are 82 players carrying a Fargo of 800 or better. 800 is no longer elite. I'd call 820 elite these days, and there are 36 players carrying 820+.
Europe will likely field a team in which every player is 820+ Fargo. This year looks to be as big a mismatch as in the past few years. Yes, the US can win, but it is a tall order. Only Shane and Fedor are World Top 50 based on Fargo, and both have struggled mightily at the Mosconi over the years.

Replacing Thorpe with Bergman neither improves nor worsens Team USA, and it will extend the long streak of refusal to include young Americans on the team, setting the stage for future failure, too. Same old, same old if that's the only change to Team USA.

of course it's possible, and should happen now and then because of the nature of the format. doesn't mean it's competitive overall.

USA needs better junior player development. hayden ernst is promising, but other than that..

Johan is going to pair up SVB and Gorst in doubles on day 1.

The Europeans are going to be running scared.
SVB & Gorst lost to Filler & Alcaide in 2025.
SVB & Gorst lost to Kaci & FSR in 2024.
SVB & Gorst won against Filler & FSR in 2023.

They have a 33% win rate in doubles at the MC.
Their last win together in doubles was 3 years ago.

Do you just talk out of your ass without providing any evidence?
