So you Think you Know Billiard Movies. Well, think again.

Check this page out. Never knew there were so many pool B movies. :)

Check out the "original" movie poster I just found (and bought) of "The Player" starring Minnesota Fats. I bet there's not many of these around. :)

Hard Knuckle
(Made for TV, 1987, Australia)

Plot: In a post-apocalyptic wilderness world of drugs, lawlessness and corrupt poolhalls, a maverick pool-player (Bisby) challenges the reigning champion at the "knuckle table" where losers sacrifice their fingers.

I'd love to get my hands on an untouched, unfolded, pristine copy of this poster. :)

I have an original American version of the TCOM poster when the movie hit the streets in 1986, framed and preserved.

I bought up against the 8 at wal-mart just for kicks. They could have grabed any person who had ever played in a tournament ever and done a better job with the technical advisory than was displayed in this film. I couldn't even finish watching it. It was like a parody of a real film, except they were serious.

I watched The Hustler last night (for the gazzillionth time :D ), but I noticed something I had never seen before. In the scene near the beginning, when Eddie is waiting for Fats, he and Charlie are talking about how much he is gonna win. If you look on the wall behind Charlie, there is a poster for an exibition for Mosconi. It has a few of his high run totals on there as well. Just thought it was interesting that I had never noticed it before.

I haven't seen Stickmen yet. Is it as bad as Poolhall Junkies?

About even I would say to PHJ. If you can dismiss the unrealism of the storyline, and overlook some amateurism of the shooting, it is halfway entertaing. Plus being in Australia/New Zealand ?? adds a little different flavor to it.

It never ceases to amaze me, that these directors think a 'B' actor that can't shoot Pool in real life are better in Pool oriented films, than a real life good Pool player that has some personality to them for a lead role. Many Pool players/hustlers are born actors, an occupational hazard so to speak.

Cast Jack Hynes in a lead role, then you will have a Pool film .... :D  :D

I'll liked Poolhall Junkies... in part cause the pool shots are impressive and filmed from far enough way that you can actually watch them.

Stickmen is horribly filmed as far as the pool is concerned, and the shots they use aren't even impressive to begin with. The plot was alright, nothing to write home about... it's good enough if you're jonesing for a new pool movie, but I couldn't recommend it on any other grounds.

I liked stickmen a lot, just for the fun aspect. You can about throw it in with any mood and just have fun. While most other pool movies out there, I really have to be in the mood.. I hated "Shooting Gallery", personally think "Kiss Shot" is a complete waste, I mean c'mon Whoopi shooting for custody of her child makes as much sense as Sly Stone arm wrestling for the same cause. I couldn't make it past 20 minutes of "Up against the 8". And then there is "Pool Hall Junkies", it was an ok movie, but everyone seemed too cocky for their ability. I loved "Color of Money" until, I read the book, and it doesn't come close to the book. Though "Color of Money" will always be magical as my first pool movie experience and an enjoyable film even if it has nothing to do with Walter Trevis's idea. The "Hustler" is close and a awesome movie by all aspects.. But my favorites are "Baron and the Kid", mainly for it's got probably the most realistic shooting I've seen in a movie, and hell you can't beat the man in black.. And very favorite I've seen so has to be "The Balitmore Bullet", James Coburn does a good job of being fun and charismatic as always.... and there is still so many movies I've not seen.. I own "Chalk" but still haven't got around to watching it, and other then that. It's all i know... and that's my 2cents on what I've seen.

Well Put.

I've watched The Hustler, Color of Money, Pool Hall Junkies and Stickmen.

Stickmen I can throw in and not worry about someone walking in and being bored while watching it... any of the other 3 movies that I've seen, I keep in mind who else might be watching it, and their level of billiard/pool interest.... and lack there of.
If just watching it alone, I have to be in a certain mood to watch the others, stickmen I don't.

I watched, The Player, when it opened in Jackson, MS in 71. Fatty was there giving an exhibition after the show. It was a very bad movie but was shot in Baton Rouge and had a few guys I knew in it. Donovan and I have a DVD trailer of the movie, problem is mine doesn't play any more.

Try amazon.com --- you maybe able to get a copy. I was in Kiss Shot (a made for tv movie), one of the AZB members sent me a copy (thank you Jeff) but a friend said you can sometimes pick up an old movie you want from amazon.com.
