Any videos of Dr Dave in an actual match?

I'll give you guys a good example. Forty. He's a good buddy of mine, I've played him since the 90's. A through and through pool player, well before his brother got famous. He's a good player from Philly. Once his brother got famous acting, they had millions. He quit everything and focused on pool. Got professional instruction from Robin out west. He'd fly there every so often for another lesson. He's made pool his life the past 10 years. He even went to the middle east and played the MR events there.

With all that, he's about the same speed he was 20 years ago.

Sounds like he doesn't "need" to win. Doesn't have to try and convince the gas company that the 9 ball skidded on him but he is sure he can settle up soon.

Kinda.

But there's still a line.

If you can't beat me, I'm not likely to spend any money for you to teach me...
SVB has a 30mph or near 30mph break speed, was he taught that or was he born with that? A good coach will recognize YOUR strengths and weaknesses and help tailor the best game for YOU, SVB had a coach that he played in a match, guess who won? It wasn't the coach, at the end SVB said I couldn't have done it without you...

Is there proof of this? SVB can crack em, but I don’t think he’s getting near 30mph…

I can envision an instructors tournament. Call it the Briesath Cup. Invitations only.

Dr. Dave, Fran, Billiards about and Ron the Pool Student vs. Sharivari, Barry Stark, Barton Snooker and the Pool School guy. 😄 Bob can officiate. Open for suggestions.

Kidding of course, but this idea isn’t totally ridiculous I suppose.

That would be fun to see/do. In at least one event they had a match with the referees, with the pool players commentating LOL

Yes, there is a minimum level of comprehension of the game beneath which one should not teach. Yes, I have occasionally run into a certified instructor whose entire pool knowledge could be written down on the back of a postage stamp but let us focus on the many who speak the language of pool fluently.

If you believe that anyone who can beat Dr Dave in a pool match would be likely to be a better teacher than he, you are badly mistaken. Similarly, I'm sure there are those that cannot beat him but are better instructors.

I know that many on AZB think otherwise, but when shooting skills correlate with instructional skills it is, more often than not, a coincidence.
A local player who is a Master level instructor, and has coached and helped several top national level junior players, is a mid-B level player who I don't think has a 2 pack to his name that I have seen in the 10 years I have known him. But his students have achieved high level play, including national titles in the 18 and under Junior National event, with at least 6 of the kids (including my son) finishing top 8 or winning their age groups. One year we had 2 1st place finishers, a 2nd, and 3 top 8s.

This would certainly be fun for me and the others to participate in, but wouldn't you rather watch top play from pro players? There is so much great pro match content available to watch online, why would you interested in watching stuff of lesser quality?

Thanks for sharing. As you have hinted, the results attained by an instructor's students are, arguably, the most important hint you need when selecting an instructor for yourself.

Same reason I root for two APA 3s when I know them and would sit through their match even if it's bad play LOL It's fun and a bit exiting to see a match by someone you "know". I bet if the Mosconi cup was played by APA players, they would get as much cheering and backing their side as the pro players.

It would be amusing listening to the lot of you trying to coach each other on how to make shots.

I don’t know why anybody would care about watching me play; but if you really want to, I have lots of examples available in the “Example Videos of Dr. Dave Playing Pool” section near the bottom of the page here:

For those interested, I just remembered that I included a few VNEA Vegas match highlights from a couple of years ago here, where "I Got Lucky" few times:

Michael Jordan.

The man basically would win poker hands and Black Jack hands till coach Phil Jackson helped him get over the hump.

I think its downright a lazy and an insincere argument to downplay an instructor.

I always enjoy this conversation when it comes up. I like taking lessons from instructors even if they need massive weight from me. They are much better at seeing flaws in my setup and delivery than I am. That being said, I will NEVER pay for lessons from a weaker player if I'm trying to learn strategy or pattern play. They may be great at understanding stance and stroke fundamentals, but some of them I've met have NO CLUE what the balls are going to do on the table. I have a "Master" instructor in mind who I can't stand to watch play. They teach the set-pause-finish but when they play they use the goofiest jerkiest stroke I've ever seen. Practice what you teach!

Judging by the breadth and depth of his knowledge of the game, I would say that by now he plays at a professional level. No doubt.
