clean with a shaft cleaning to remove most chalk and dirt then roll sand then sraight with 220-600 grit sand paper then seal sand smooth with 1000-1500 grit then burnish and wax then scuff tip if there are any large dents of gouges you can fill with ca after the 220 grit and will be like new...

you can build a wrap channel with ca epoxy veneer tape bondo even multiple wraps like the cotton string idea but personally i find bondo to be the fastest most easy and best way only down side is the smell when appling.......:)
