I walked into a pawn shop the other day and they had an older Mali in there for175.00. Didnt have the original shaft to i wasnt willing to pay that.
They knocked a hundred bucks off it so i took it. What made it interesting was that there was finish over the green speck linen wrap. I have never seen this on a cue before. I like to collect cues due to their uniqueness not any specific name brand. I was told in the 80's some cuemakes did the finish over the wrap thing, but i dont know if Mali ever did this to their cues. Can anyone shed light on this? The cue hits good with a tiger shaft on it.
Peace,
Mike

Very common on Mali and Meucci.

Yup, and not just in the eighties.

Not uncommon at all and we can see it occasionally on other makes as well.

Depending on what that Mali is you may be at just a comfortable price for the BUTT or it could have been a major score. Some of those old Malis have some pretty strong pricing.

I would say on the face of it knocking $100 for the lack of the shaft was about right.

The second Mali cue I bought in the early 80's had the sealed wrap. The next cue I bought that had the sealed wrap was a Meucci. I now build a lot of my own cues with sealed wraps, but I rarely seal over Irish linen but rather seal over exotic snake skins and such. The cue I play with has a sealed python wrap on it.

Most Meucci cues come standard with finish over wrap, but since their cues are made to order you can request otherwise. This pic is a Meucci Casino 3, my personal cue. I love the finish over wrap.

I got an EBay PP1 with a non sealed wrap. I thought that was kind of out of the norm for a Meucci.

Nice Casino cue BTW.

Hi,

I think that putting finish over a wrap is an oxymoron and defeats the purpose of a wrap. It is like going to your grandmother's house in the 50s and 60s when people would have their sofas and cushioned chairs covered in plastic. Yea it protected the furniture from wearing but you never got to enjoy the comfort because you always had a sweaty ass after siting on it.:kma:

I can see Mr. Hightower's finish over exotics because of the design feature of the skin.

7 or 8 years ago i bought and sold 3 meucci cues all with the finish over the wrap. all 3 cues the finish over the wrap has cracked.
plus other major problems with the rest of the cue.

I tend to agree.

The wrap is a grip. Finishing over it defeats the purpose. If/when it is purely decorative perhaps I can undestand finishing over it.

I am curious though...isn't the finish over a soft surface like linen or leather simply less durable?

I would refer to mortuarymike's post as an example.

Won't it ding/crack/lift easier?

update

Well i have been hitting with this Mali for a few weeks now and i really like the hit. Nice and solid feel to it. Come to find out it has a few more dings and couple of dents in it that i didnt notice the first time. No biggie, again i got it for its uniqueness not for resale. Also the cue has a roll in it, the steel joint is not centered. so not every shaft i could use with it is usable. I still think i have a gem on my hands even if it in my own mind. I was trying to put pics up of it but i guess im not smart enuf to finger that part out. Does Mali do repairs on their older cues?

In the early ninties I was a meucci dealer , it cost 10 bucks extra if you did not want the wrap covered . Jim

Any recommendations on the best finishing agent for going over wraps, prep work?

You might have to re-finish the whole cue. Make sure wrap is clean or new linen wrap. The finish over the wrap can be CA, finishing epoxy, clearcoat. My preference would be West system 105/107 epoxy.
