Best way to shoot this shot

Thanks for the unedited view Brian! I also found the hi inside the most doable.

You're welcome. If the angle was a little steeper there'd be a real likelyhood of scratching in the corner or that side pocket.

It's easy to think of this as "a shot", but it's really two - and you have to weigh their combined difficulty to make the right choice. What's the difficulty of running the two balls one way vs. another?

In this case, for me, that comparison leads to the easier first shot and slightly harder second.

Good way to look at it. On a tight table, facing a tough shot with only a couple of feet between cb and ob, vs a tough shot from 6ft away....I'm making the closest shot my tough one. So it really depends on the table and the eyes of the shooter. I know my table, and shooting that 8 from 6+ feet away on a thin cut is not easy.

The question can be reduced to which is the harder shot, getting good shape off the first ball or sinking the second from farther away. I'm more likely to miss any of the shots you demonstrated (very well!) than that cut to the corner.

I'm not arguing that's the right choice, just saying more about how to look at the question.

I understand completely. The "right choice" is determined by the player's personal experience, as well as his/her knowledge of the table. On a barbox, where the 8 can be hit poorly and still find the pocket, cinching the first shot is the correct play if you're not confident that you can shoot it any other way with good results.

One of the quickest ways to lose is trying a shot you're unsure about, or a shot you think you can make but have never really shot it enough to justify that thinking.

Here are options to get better shape than cinching it..... They are tough shots, but well worth practicing.

Good video. With your set up, a great safety can be had by hitting the ball head on and with enough speed to go four rails right up on the middle of the end rail and up against the 8 ball. A little right English will put the CB up against the top rail. Great safety. Let your opponent deal with it. Also, I'm wondering how many people know they can hit the rail first or the ball first on rail shots. I think most think the rail and ball must be hit at the same time. It's a credit card width of difference but for shape one needs to know it.

Obviously the best way to shoot this shot is to hit as hard as you can and hope. People have been using this method on shots like this against me for years and it works almost every time. I’m just to stubborn to admit that it’s the best way.

Seriously I think the z option and taking a little tougher shot on the next ball is best.

The shot where you played low left and missed. I was asking friends a couple weeks ago about that exact same shot. I see the pros play that shot all the time. However when we were all trying we got the same result. Missed. Whats the key to making a ball on the rail using outside english.

Hit the ob a little thicker than you think you need to hit it.

You hit the first one good. You never came close to executing the second shot you diagrammed. On that table with that cloth as least you have a chance. Not so on a Diamond. Good luck drawing past the side pocket.

Never came close?? Lol. Not even a little bit? :frown:

My corner pockets play much tougher than Diamond pockets. Too tough in fact. The cloth is the same. I play on Diamonds 95% of the time and these shots play a bit better. The shot I missed would've dropped on 9ft Diamond with pro cut pockets.
