10 ball finals

In a match with few misses and in which neither player got much mileage from their break, the difference was the defense and kicking of Dennis. In particular, Ralf made three costly defensive errors, including one in the first rack, that set the tone for the match. Orcullo made a couple of very impressive kicks in the match at key moments.

Ironically, Ralf's near perfect play in the semifinal win over Pagulayan, a match in which he didn't have to play a safety even once, may have worked against him. Orcullo came into the final having played the cat and mouse game with Kiamco in several racks of the semifinal, and it may have helped him in beating Ralf to the shot so often in the final.

As so often happens, the final was contested between two players that both had a loss, while numerous others with just one loss (Gomez, Schmidt, Deuel and Pagulayan among them) had already been eliminated. That's the weakness of the multi-stage format, a format I've never particularly favored.

What was with the short races in the semis and finals?

Anyone know?

The semifinals (race to 7) and final (race to 8) will be sent on ESPN later, so my guess is that ESPN has demanded that the races are no longer than that.

I believe ESPN has figured out that what works best for them is short races and if tournaments wants to be broadcasted live or recorded at ESPN, they need to go by their rules.
