I'm sure this has been asked before but here gos anyway.
Yesterday playing 10 ball on a 9 foot Diamond with deep shelves.
I hang up the 9 and my opponant gets down to shoot. He strikes the cue ball and before the cue ball makes contact with the 9 it drops.
What now?
We asked several people and the best we got was call the game null and void.
But there has to be a rule somewhere.

Balls are placed as close as possible to original places. The shot is done over basically. This has come up a few times.

I was playing t-Rex and this happened to him.

We didn't know what to do, so I told him to flip a coin for the next shot.

He said no and we went to the td and asked for a ruling.

Td gave the next shot to me, in error.

See Rule 1.7:

1.7 Balls Settling
A ball may settle slightly after it appears to have stopped, possibly due to slight imperfections in the ball or the table. Unless this causes a ball to fall into a pocket, it is considered a normal hazard of play, and the ball will not be moved back. If a ball falls into a pocket as the result of such settling, it is restored as closely as possible to its original position. If a settling ball falls into a pocket during or just prior to a shot, and this has an effect on the shot, the referee will restore the position and the shot will be replayed. The shooter is not penalized for shooting while a ball is settling. See also 8.3 Ball Pocketed.

If the ball drops into the pocket before the incoming player shoots does the outgoing player get credited for a successful shot and is he allowed continue his inning? Is there a time limit for a ball to drop or is the time limit when the incoming player contacts the cue ball to begin his inning?

This (below, in red), may help you to clarify this issue. Hope it helps :)

DEFINITIONS
8.3 Ball Pocketed
A ball is pocketed if it comes to rest in a pocket below the playing surface or enters the ball return system. A ball near the brink of a pocket partly supported by another ball is considered pocketed if removal of the supporting ball would cause the ball to fall into the pocket.
If a ball stops near the edge of a pocket, and remains apparently motionless for five seconds, it is not considered pocketed if it later falls into the pocket by itself. See 1.7 Balls Settling for other details. During that five second period, the referee should ensure that no other shot is taken. An object ball that rebounds from a pocket back onto the playing surface is not a pocketed ball. If the cue ball contacts an already pocketed ball, the cue ball will be considered pocketed whether it rebounds from the pocket or not. The referee will remove pocketed object balls from full or nearly full pockets, but it is the shooter’s responsibility to see that this duty is performed.

Snooker is the same thing...player gets to replay it.

....but how come there's no rule for this in three cushion Billiards? :scratchhead:

I had the same incident when played tournament a while back. I was leading 8-7 in race to 9. it was the semi final.

I had a long shot on the 5 and it hanged at the jaws, I could not believe how it hanged but when my opponent shot, the 5 fell before cueball touched it and cueball fell into the pocket.

We called the operator and he concluded that the 5 did not fall for 5 seconds so my opponent got the chance to shoot at a re-spotted 5 at the jaw and cueball at the previous position.

he cleaned the last 3 balls and I lost on the hill.

This happened to me in a 1P game. I had a ball hanging in my pocket and my oppenent had a ball hanging in his. I shot, made my ball and spun across to his pocket. Before the cue strikes his ball it drops and I scratch. We were at a loss as to what to do. I seem to recall we spotted both balls and also a penalty ball. Later I found out the proper thing to do would have been to replace both balls and shoot again. Very unusual situation.
