Did anyone here go to the big tournament that just happened in Oklahoma City?

It was 9-ball on bar boxes, race to 11. Under 600 FargoRate. $1000 to get in. 128 players.

Digital Pool has some of the results but it's really hard to figure out. The results are not complete, and there are three separate brackets, one of which is empty.

John Barton has some info on his FB page. 1st was $50,000 and 17th-32nd paid $1000. There was also a calcutta.

Didn't go but there was a group of about 5 from around here that went. One of them made it to final 32 then lost two in a row.
Haven't had a chance to talk to any of them yet.

Some more info...

128 players, $136,400 in the prize fund ($8,400 added)
$91,000 in two calcuttas

Top 8:
1. Nicholas Epple, AZ, $50,000 (585)
2. Frank Sparkman, OKC, $25,000 (600)
3. Josh Faught, IL, $12,500 (599)
4. Tony Balsimo, VA, $7000 (592)
5-6. Ramon Canela Alvarado, NY, $3,500 (561)
5-6. Ruben Adame, Dallas, $3,500 (597)
7-8. Ronald Machado, FL, $2,500 (595)
7-8. Jason Alvarez, TX, $2,500 (595)

Average Fargo rating of 590 for the top 8 in a 600 and under tournament.

And average of 594 for the top 4.

I guess racing to 11 makes it much more likely that the stronger player will come out on top, even when the difference is perhaps just 20-30 or so Fargo Rate points.

In a longish race 7+ I believe a 25-40 difference in points is worth about 1 game on the wire

Two guys from here went.

One finished just out of the money and one did pretty well at 9–12.

I haven't talked to either one of them yet other than a few texts, but I understand there is quite a bit of drama around the venues too.

Except for that, it looked like a blast.

$84k in the Calcutta if I remember right.

Do you know what the drama was? No one wanted to come out and say it on the facebook stuff I read.

From my brief and possibly incomplete understanding it was played across three different venues with completely different playing conditions in each.

But again, I haven't spoken to anybody specifically yet

I should know more tomorrow…

I watched a little of the stream and the only drama I saw was when there was a one game miscount that was only caught later. The match was restarted and finished without any obvious animosity.

Speaking of FargoRate, here is a video Mike Page just posted about possible sandbagging at events like this.

Really good arguments against the probability of a sandbagger's convention. However, I'm pretty sure I can list close to a dozen players I know around the country who have a fargorate that is at least 50 below what I estimate their speed to be.

I'm pretty sure sandbagging works even with fargorate.

The bolded part pretty much sums it up. I'm not saying that there are not legitimate sandbaggers, we know there are. But if I took a poll around just my local pool scene, more people would claim they are UNDERRATED. People need to let the math do it's job. Just my opinion.

This really got 128 paid players at 1k per head?

On the East coast, I don’t think 5 players would have entered.

I know what you're saying, but around Houston, sandbagging is a world class art.

His argument was about the tournament, not fargorate in general.
