107 Breaks & 6 Chances

As some may realize I had new Apple Green Simonis 860 put on the Gold Crown IV a couple of weeks ago. The last two days I have been doing nothing but racking and breaking racks of 9-Ball. After the first ten or so breaks with either nothing down, no shot, or both I decided to keep track.

The final numbers the last two days are 107 breaks and only 6 chances to run out. And yes, I realize Efren might have had maybe ten chances to run out. But that was it.

And to answer any questions:
1) Yes, I've had the dehumidifier running.
2) Yes, I've changed CB positions.
3) Yes, I've changed speeds.
4) Yes, I've changed CBs.
5) Yes, I am using a template.

This type of futility just ruins my enthusiasm for the game.

Were you breaking good before the cloth replacement?

It sounds stupid, but is the spot in the correct place?

What game are you breaking?

He said 9 ball. What he didn't say:

Are the balls all frozen?

Is the 1 ball on the spot?

Are you trying to make the wing ball?

What is your break speed? (There's an app for that.)

Are you hitting the 1 ball full?

Things of importance in life
1.. Were you told you are full of cancer and have less than a week to live, get your affairs in order.
2. Are you having trouble breathing and know one day you're lungs will give up and in the next few minutes you will be dead.
3. Are you in excruciating pain almost every minute of every day , and the doctors are all terrified of losing their license if they prescribe any pain killers for you.
1,000,000,000 You only had 6 to 10 chances to run out at nine ball.
It's better to be thankful for the good things you have than to waste time with the ones you don't.
You can get help and try different things, enjoy the process.

It’s only two days. The curse can and does run way longer than that. Think nothing of it and keep playing. I’ve suffered through the curse for six weeks. It sucks but everyone goes thru it.

You suck!!!

No seriously, I have no idea why you're having this issue

He said 9 ball. What he didn't say:
I must have had a brain fart.

  1. Stand at the middle of the head rail. I'm going to assume you're breaking from the left side of the table. If not, do the same thing but the other way.
  2. Reach your left hand out and touch the tit of the pocket, the tit nearest the center. Take a step back so you're about 5' from the table. Imagine a line from that tit to the one on the far rail. Place the CB on that line near the head string.
  3. Walk behind the CB and align it visually with the 3rd diamond on the end rail (rightmost one). This is your shot line.
  4. You want to hit this with low left, like say in the 7 o'clock region. Get into stance while looking at the 3rd diamond.
  5. Ideally the CB will stop near center table, you might want a small "pop" but maybe not, depends on the table, deflection, etc.
  6. Hit it with a good stroke at at lag speed... if that doesn't work, hit it at about lag speed plus 1/2 table.
  7. Once you're consistently making the wing ball start working on making the wing ball and the one ball. (the 1B is also very controllable, so you can set it up for an easy starter shot if you want to. It's possible, I can't explain it all in a post.
This is all you can ask for from a break. All racks aren't runnable, never were and never will be, however many are winnable. If the rack isn't runnable, practice a push out shot or a safety. Play the rack until you either hook the hell out of the ghost or at least practice a push out. If you want additional safety play practice, play a safe then try to return the safe or get out of it. In other words train your mind. This game isn't all about running out.

Getting upset about having few runnable racks may be a sign that your mental game is suffering. You might need a week off pool. Anger clouds the mind. It can sometimes put you into laser like focus but that's a different anger than just being mad at bad layouts. Take your licks and know that eventually lady luck will warm up to you. Read The Pleasure of Small Motions. Find beauty in the game, because quite frankly as cruel and demanding as the game can be at times, the beauty is sometimes the only thing enjoyable about this frustrating game.

Running out shouldn't be the goal in 9B, winning should be. Play a devastating safety or leave them dead ends. Shots where scratches are dead on, impossible position routes to the next ball, wrong side of the shot line, so they break out your clusters, etc. Tempt them to be greedy and fight against percentages. Eventually even the most patient player will take a wild flier. Firepower is absolutely needed as is rack running but it's what's going on behind the scenes aka strategy that wins sets.

You should quit.

Bob,
Yes, the balls are frozen. However, I am going to use a brand new template later today to see if it helps.
Yes, the 1B is on the spot. And I've also tried it high on the spot and low on the spot.
Nope, not trying to make the wing ball.
Break speed when I last checked it was anywhere from 16-20 mph.
With regards to hitting the 1B full - sometimes.

Since I've been using the template this Gold Crown IV has broken better. But the last few days it's been extremely stingy. EXTREMELY!

Try using a new set of quality balls?

This guy is like a fire, you should look away, but you are drawn to seeing it.
No matter what he does, it will not be good enough. He ran 10 racks, why didn't I get shape on the 4 ball in the 11th rack.

I used to go hang out at Nick Varners place with Dr. Cue and Johnny Archer back when Buddy Hall and blah blah blah same story just a different piece of equipment. Chalk, balls, rack, table, tip, stick, break stick, playing stick, jump stick, this template, that template, aim this way, aim that way.

Keep the stories coming, especially about you and pool royalty, those are the best.

First rack today with the older template - break and run. Wasn't easy though. Had to make an off-angle bank into the side on the 1B.

Three racks later another break and run.

Broke about 16-17 racks today and had one other chance to run out but hosed it up.

Three chances out of 16-17, I'll take it.

Would have played more but the Masters is getting close. Might break a few more racks after it's over.
