14.1 Payouts

Oh boy, the ole pool vs golf debate. OK, I'll play for one post. When was the last time they (pool players) had to hit a shot in a 30 MPH wind driving rain sideways in 45 degree weather?
Well, the temperature wasn't 45 degrees but I've seen rain go horizontally across a pool table at a World Championship in the middle of a match. Some of us were wondering whether the building would stay up.

After they replaced the balls and things got a little dryer, the player whose turn it was (Herb Lehman) played the safe he had been planning.

Ray Martin faded an earthquake for a World 14.1 title.

Pool is always going to pay peanuts, take it for what it is. You either like it for a hobby or you don't. There's perhaps 5 players in the pool world that make an average living. The great thing about it is, they have no boss, or schedule. Total freedom, that's their biggest incentive.

It's never going to be on the level of any major sport, nor will the payouts. Not even fair to try and compare.

That was a awesom field!

Bad thing for the players, if you didnt win the tournament or finished 2nd, you went home with less money then you came with!

Thar was one tough field, imagine finishing 3rd and losing money?

Cards, cards, and cards!

You are leaving out the possibility of a parallel universe where pool players play in stadiums, marry gorgeous models, and fly to tournaments in private jets.....and the golf and tennis pros sneak 4 guys into the Econolodge.

The AzB tournament-results database shows that the prizes in 2013 were as follows. I don't know whether they were the same this year.

1st -- $13,000
2nd -- 6,500
3rd-4th -- 3,450
5th-8th -- 2,500
9th-16th -- 1,600
17th-24th -- 600

Total -- $54,000

A week in a New York hotel, a flight there, transportation around, and overly priced food. God it would be a bad thing to say you finished 3/4 in a "world" tournament and maybe broke even if you're lucky.

I played in the south, years ago on a 4X8 bar box with the HUGE Heavy cue ball Dirty, and cloth as thick as rag with humidity like Houston TX. The balls had never been cleaned.

Yep...in the Schmidt/Deuel tar podcast, John was lamenting the financial consequences of being a pro pool player and Corey responded with something to the effect of

Yeah, but I haven't worked a day, ever.

Anybody hear anything about Corey's involvement in some sort of new pool venture 6 mos-a year back or so? I heard if from a real goofball so i dont want to put it out there.

I think you're thinking of the one he tried out in Tampa with the players in groups keeping their own score like golf. A lot of scores were very different on paper than what we saw on the stream. That is also when the Seminoles were his big sponsor. Johnnyt

I dont THINK that would be it but considering the goofball source, maybe.

PS-That really really sounds like a real bad idea. How are fans gonna be 'engaged' (soon to pass buzzword) in that?
