15 Ball Ghost Rating Drill

Finally did it today. Got a 50 (rack scores below). Two of the 3's I had could have been 2's, but I scratched after making the 2nd to last ball both times.

Here's the link for the 20 I scored, just to make it all official-like... :) I hope I counted correctly, need to keep track a little better as it's easy to project forward to what you think you will get, then you miss unexpectedly, or the other way around, kick something in you didn't think would go, and get all messed up.

Avert your eyes in the third rack, it's pretty ugly... :)

Will definitely do this again when I have time and try to video again as well, will also include it in my weekly practice, at least once a week would be a great addition I think.

Enjoy...

Nice shooting Scott. Is that a store you are playing in?

Yes, a place called Billiard Factory here in Jacksonville. They sell tables and accessories for pool as well as darts, table tennis, etc., plus dinette and bar furniture.

They put in a few tables over a year ago for an exhibition, decided to leave them in and develop sort of an academy, and have since added 2 more and a 3 cushion table. They rent the tables for $5 an hour or $10 for the day, so it's pretty reasonable, no smoking and usually pretty quiet. They have a pro come in once every 3 months or so and do an exhibition then lessons on the weekend. Also have tournaments every so often. I teach up there as well, including a free clinic once a month. Great place to practice, I'm up there between practice and lessons 4 or 5 days a week and the GC V's they have in the front play great.

I really need to tune my home setup (GC IV), the table was never set up quite right, I have a new light I need to put up, and would like a video camera setup like you have. I have hardly played at home since I got my table, partly because of the setup issues, partly because it's upstairs and just too many distractions. I think if I didn't have that place to practice I would play at home more, but I get more peace and quiet at the store... :)

Ghost ball scoring....

I gave it a shot on my home table which is an 8 footer. After about 4-5 sessions this was the best I could put together.
Ended up with a 28. Breakdown listed below. This is a great practice drill because u really bear down wanting to get a good score. I will keep trying to better my score. Thanks to the original poster for starting this.......

So if I miss, then take ball in hand, it's only 1 point? I tried this but I think I was scoring wrong and giving myself too many points.

Yes. So even if it's a tough shot it's only 1 point max penalty. If you miss you still get bih and only 1 point. I only pick up CB when both the shot and position for the next ball is too tough. That way I only lose 1 point instead of most likely 2 (missing second shot)

Also, if you attempt a kick and miss ball contact that's the only 2 point penalty. This rule is in place to discourage out of order cluster breakouts.

Yep, and I really like that rule for the reason you stated.

When I did this over the weekend, I had a bad break and about 6 balls tied up on the long rail. Luckily the 2 ball was in front of them. So I took BIH on the 1, made it, and then hit the 2 really hard to break them up.

Very nice!

Adding your score to the OP.

Finally going to have some table time to myself today, so I'll give it a shot.
Score and video to be submitted soon (if I don't throw a fit and quit out of frustration).

Ok, that makes sense. I was giving myself 2 points when I missed then took ball in hand. I'll try again. Doubt I'll take a camera to the pool room though.

Regarding Youtube audio tracks....

My video had the track muted by youtube because I had copyright claimed music playing on the radio. Now I was just watching the last part of Joe Tuckers video, and the sound is muted as well. It wasn't a couple of days ago, but I guess Youtube just caught up to him. Its a shame.

<====== I'm never playing music while recording any practice sessions again.

Interesting - The video I put up here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XrXUAUTkd8

I was playing the radio and they played "Sweet Annie" - someone must have reviewed my video and put a little "buy sweet annie" tag on it. Since the radio didn't break with a station identifier annoucement, I assume they just allowed the music.

This tells me that if you play songs off I-tunes or an ipod, it should be OK.

I don't understand it enough. I just know its given me enough trouble in the past that I'm not going to have music on again. On my videos, the music was streaming from my Apple TV. Sometimes youtube just says its a copyright infringement, and won't play in certain countries. This is the first time they turned off all the music. I think its because I was listening to a Beatles station on the Apple TV, and the Beatles have probably the toughest copyright rules of any band.

I also doubt on yours a youtube user "tagged" the song. I think most likely its an automated process by Youtube to identify every song in a video, and automatically decide what to do with the song at that point, depending on who owns the copyright of the song and what their policy is.

Table Slope Rating

While the shooting was awesome on many of these videos, I saw some shots potted that would not have gone in on my 9' pro cut 4 1/2" Diamond. I believe the same player would have a different rank based on the table they took the test on. This is true for all of the ability tests - not just this one. Likewise I saw numerous shots on the IPAT that would have never gone in on my table.

A slope rating, like golf courses have, would make the scores even more meaningful. There is an algorithm on AZB somewhere that can be used to calculate a table's difficulty. This difficulty could possibly be incorporated to determine a slope rating.

It's a really fun test though.

It's a really fun test though.

I recall during an accustats commentary, Buddy Hall said something to the affect of "it doesn't matter how small the pocket is if you always hit the center"

I'm not disagreeing with you, just offering Buddy's viewpoint.

Coincidentally, I wanted my home table to be buckets. It's a GC with only the factory shims, no additional ones added. I want to build as much confidence and have as much fun as possible at home. Not beat myself up. Anyway, that was my reasoning on bucket pockets for home. Over a year later after having the table, I'd do it exactly the same way again.

Got through ten racks last night (on a relatively easy table) and had a few thoughts about the game:

- The break is massive. I had trouble getting the the head balls to freeze and slug racked myself a couple times. Next stop, cluster city and a 6 or 7 ball in hand rack. May have to use a magic rack next time.

- This game is tiring. I was planning to do it three times and post up my best score, but after getting through it once, I was beat. Went back to 9-ball and it was like running downhill on a windy day.

- When I get rolling, I tend to play too fast and it came back to bite me a few times. I really need to stop to check the narrow position lanes to stay on the correct side and avoid running into balls.

I haven't had time to review the video for an exact score, but I'm guessing in the high 30's. I'll get a proper count and upload it later. With some practice and a better rack, I'm thinking mid to high 20's would be a good goal to aim for.

Thanks for the great idea and I hope to see more from everyone.
