1987 Brunswick World Open 9-Ball Quarter Finals: McCready v. Reyes

Thanks JAM for posting this gem!! They only made one Keith. That was fun!!! He's an exciting player to watch, I can't wait to see your next post:-)))))))

Thank you, Jennie. That was fun.

I found my way back to pool in '87, started playing again at Bob's Billiards on my lunch hour. Came back in the evening a couple times a week, never got to see Keith. Ask him if he knew a guy named Auggie. He ran around the pool room in his bare feet. :)

I feel like singing Freddy Fender's "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," because ever since I learned this morning how to convert video files to then upload on YouTube, I can't stop myself. It is a time-consuming process.

This was a match that went to the double-hill, and it's a really, really good match. The video quality is not professional, but this one is a real beauty.

Both players are dressed to the nines. Each one lags for the break wearing their tuxedos. :grin-square:

The tournament took place at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Steve Mitzerak and another man named "Barry," whose voice I don't recognize, are commentating. They said Efren had just defeated Keith back in L.A. the week before at another tournament, and he had just come to the United States 3 years ago. Thjey said Efren was playing with a cuestick that cost $15.

Lot of players in the audience: Dan Louie, a very young Dennis Hatch, Johnny Archer, Buddy Hall, Billy Incardona, Grady Mathews, et cetera.

I have already converted and am uploading to YouTube now. I hope they let me post 39 minutes of it.

I can't wait to put all my pool videos on YouTube.

I'm so excited. Can you tell? :happydance::happydance::happydance:

Thanks Jen! First time I heard Efren cursed too! :p

I'm so glad you-all enjoyed a snippet of pool in 1987 as much as I did. It was truly a treat for me to see Keith all gussied up. He told me that the tuxedo was a rental.

The owner of Bob's Billiards adopted Keith when he was a teenager, to keep him out of foster care. Keith's family had disintegrated after the death of his mother from cancer, and Keith literally grew up in that pool room.

JohnnyP, I've heard Keith speak to Auggie on the phone a lot, especially when we're en route to the horses. Apparently, Auggie is quite a horse handicapper and knows who's who in the horse industry.;)

Interestingly in the early '90s, Keith left the pool scene and worked on a quarterhorse farm for Glen Campbell's ex-wife. There, he met quite a few horse-racing industry members. It was a turbulent time for Keith's generation. Keith absolutely adored the horses and still does today. :smiling-heart:

It's funny that you mentioned bare feet. Before I met Keith, he was known for playing in his bare feet, especially down in Mobile when action was rampant. These were pool's golden years, as Billy Incardona would say, and we will never see pool played quite like this again in today's pool world, where two gunslingers would step up to the plate and gamble. Today, few people want to gamble; rather, they're looking for somebody to drop their wallet or find themselves a lock. :o

Though I enjoy Keith the tournament soldier, I think he was a much more exciting action player than a tournament competitor. :D

Thanks Jen! First time I heard Efren cursed too! :p

Efren looked so cute in this tuxedo, didn't he? And he was smoking ciggies, too. Both he and Keith were smoking ciggies tableside. :p

I sure would like to find a video of the two-shot/push-out rules in a tournament, so we could see how it's played by those who know how to play with those rules.

I do wonder what year the rules changed to today's rules in 9-ball. Does anybody know? I'll bet Jay Helfert knows. :)

BTW, I thought Steve Mizerak did an excellent job commentating. Barry Tompkins seemed a little green about pool to me, but he was okay, I guess.

The videotape I've been trying to dub that broke is of a tournament in Atlantic City, and it has Keith vs. Mike Sigel, but there's also a good match with Jimmy Reid. I'm going to pay to get that video dubbed. With the ribbon broken at the end of the reel, I'm afaid to fool with it.

From this same 1987 tournament with Efren and Keith, I have a match with Keith vs. Earl. There's a couple tense moments where Keith chirps at the table, and Earl gives him the evil eye. :grin-square:

BTW, does Earl color his hair? I thought he was a natural blond. :embarrassed2:

I've been looking for videos of that 9-ball format for a long time! I wish I could make more sense of the rule explanations posted here on AZ before, but I'm more of a visual learner, I guess. :)

Thank you so much for this and the other video of Keith and Matlock. I'm too young to have ever seen these legends play in their prime. These are utterly invaluable to me. I feel like I woke up, had coffee, turned on the computer, and found the arc of the covenant or something. You're awesome! Thank you again!

Edit:
Also, I believe that you've just posted the earliest clip ever of Efren Reyes on Youtube. The former title-holders, I think, were the semi-final and final matches between Efren and Earl Strickland at the 1988 Tara Open 9-ball. You've done the billiards world a great service, JAM!

That is so cool to know. Thank you, RedEyeJedi!

I'm uploading another match now from the same tournament, this time Keith v. Earl. Another beauty. :grin-square:

Jam,

Thanks in advance!

U have made some great posts since I became a member.
Can't help but feel a bit envious about your ability to tackle the uploading
of files to Youtube.

Will U B at the Mosconi Cup?
Perhaps you could show me a few tips for uploading something myself.

Best Regards,
The Fool4Pool,
Noel

We won't be going to Mosconi Cup at this juncture. With the Government shutdown, it's put my job in a tailspin, so I will probably be playing catch-up with work and finances, if you know what I mean. :o

I use a lot of audio editing programs for my job. Some software, I know like the back of my hand, especially when it comes to audio, but the video software packages, I'm doing like a hunt-and-peck, trying to familiarize myself. One of my audio software programs, one of many, is ExpressScribe by NCH, an Australian company. They put out a video-converting softward called "Prism Video File Converter" ---> HERE

What's cool about this software is that you can convert those multiple VOB video files in the video folder into one WMV, AVI, FLV, et cetera, format. These are the formats you need to be compatible with YouTube. ;)

There are videos on YouTube that tell you how to upload video. You just create a YouTube account, then click the UPLOAD button. It's kind of easy. You just drag that video file into a box. It takes a while to upload, but it's pretty cool how easy it really is.

Believe me, if I can do it, so can you. :grin-square:

What I am going to work on next is dubbing my VHS pool videos into digital format. Now, that's a tough nut to crack. I am still trying to figure it out. I dubbed 80 videos a few months ago for a work-related endeavor and forgot how I did it.

On the wanted for sale forum folks are always bumping to the top.

Thanks.

Looks like thanks has already been said, but thanks again.

I knew when I became aware of your great effort

you are on track to make many players and fans very very happy.

Bee's have royal jelly, but we got the JAM !!!

ps. JAM, I'll have to go through my own tv recorded VHS tapes soon.

If I find some Keith matches I'll let you know.

:groucho:

Three completely essential points:

1. If you are wearing a tuxedo and noone else around you is, you are probably a waiter.

2. If you absolutely have to remove your jacket when wearing a tuxedo, you MUST be wearing a vest.

3. The correct way to hold up the pants of a tuxedo is with WHITE suspenders, and not with black ones or a cummerbund.

In an emergency, these rules may save your life!

If your vids are half as good as your pics it well be a pleasure watching them.

Quarter Finals McCready vs Reyes

Thanks for the memories JAM! Loved watching the match. I lived in So. Cal then and saw Keith play a lot. Keith was a great player and when hit his highest gear NOBODY COULD BEAT HIM. I also saw him play a lot in Portland, OR.

He also was the best "roll out player" around. Great shot maker and had the balls to shot them. Tell Keith hi for me although he probably doesn't remember me.

Yeah, being a great shot maker can come in handy in two foul 9 Ball. It gets a little demoralizing when your opponent keeps pushing to a shot he can make and you can't.:grin-square:

The last time I saw JAM........

I told her I had something for her that she would love. I believe it was 2005. I had found a guys website that had old school pool matches and were reasonably priced. So I ordered a few matches. One was a match between Efren and Jeanette in Manila sponsored by LG. It was a good match. The other 3 were matches with Keith.

Glad she got them posted for everyone to enjoy.

Now if we could get the match between Keith and Bushwhacker posted......LOL!

Are you the one that sent those to me originally? Isn't it awful that I did not write your name on the DVDs. I love those videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have things scattered all over the house and have not been good about keeping things orderly, I'm afraid.

I'm working on the Keith vs. Gary X-rated match. I sent a message to Pat via a third person, hoping to get a reply soon. If he gives me the green light, I'm going for it. :D

I hope YouTube allows the "F" word on videos.

Jenny, let me send you my muchos gracias!!! Somehow I missed this thread first but was lucky to notice Keith vs Earl so was going to post there. What you are doing is priceless! The videos from the past are pure gems, back then there was no live streaming, even TV tables were a rarity. Thanks a lot, from Russia with Love!
