200 Int'l Challenge of Champions: Ortmann vs Bustamante - $50k mistake?

This match from the year 2000 (not 200 lol) was on ESPN Classic today in my area. 1st off - WTF is with the Elephant balls? What a travesty for spectators! :angry:

Anyway, it's $50k winner takes all. Caliber of play had been superb for both. They go to one rack sudden death and Busty wins the lag. For some reason he soft breaks and makes nothing. Mind you he'd been hammering the break and had very good success. The announcers (Hopkins and Laurance) had been marveling at his power break and were awestruck that on his final stroke back, the cue completely came back off his bridge hand.

Even Ortmann is supposed to have gavin a WTF look to Busty on the soft break.

So Ortmann plays a safe. Busty kicks for a good hit but leaves a shot. Oliver then makes the one and next shot he caroms in the 9 ball - game, set, match. $50k!

Why would Busty dessert his killer break? Do you think it was a mental error attributed to a $50k or nothing rack or a smart play that simply didn't work? Ya think he wishes he had that break back?

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

I saw the 200 Challenge of Champions and Busty was not in it. The final two players were Claudius and Agustus. Agustus ran 6 Christains down before missing and allow Claudius to pick up the skin.

Man, get your history right! :)

Where's my dam proof reader!!! LMAO NewStroke - good one. It was the 2000 ICC. D'oh!

You really think they played that rack for $50k???? I'd bet a testicle they chopped before the match even started with that goofy format.

It's pretty common advice-make sure you don't scratch on the break hill hill. He must have been thinking about that.

Sick if you do, sick if you don't... But given Butsy's break, I'd have to bet on playing to my strength with the break.
Couldn't agree more about the Elephant Balls - what a joke. They came into vogue about when they were doing the two table tv format. Always a 20", straight-in, 9 ball shot to please the masses... after cutting away from a multiple rail kick-safety before seeing the attempt.

OK, but I think it's bad advice. If a soft break gives you the best chance to win the last game, it gives you the best chance to win the first game. He's in the stream almost to the far bank and he decides the horse that brought him nearly all the way is not good enough, tries to jump to another horse, falls in the water and drowns.

Wasn't this the same match that Ortman was messing around with a newly replaced tip just before it started?

I was really surprised that a back up shaft wasn't in the bag. Not shocked, but surprised.

i saw this tournament go hill hill one year with archer and buddy. it was so funny, archer gets a tough combo, smacks it. he misses, the nine goes 2 rails into the side. match over right? no, youve got to call the 9. but if he would have lucked say the 4 ball in the side he'd keep shooting. ok, this makes no sense to me (eg if u make only the 9 on the break do you win? shoot again? not shoot again? what??). anyway, buddy won and archer was playing better i thought. but that is 9 ball. buddy did play really well too though.

Yeah- I wasn't saying i agree with it either and i dont recall that game. Sounds like he went too far for sure if he was insuring against the scratch.

Should have maybe just taken "a little off".
