2008 AZ Straight Pool Challenge!

Straight pool is really hard!

10, 10, 10, 10, why can't I make that 11th ball? Why don't the balls do what I tell them too?!?!?

Who is a good straight pool coach?

Blackjack, Steve Lipsky, John Schmidt just to name some forum members. And we are lucky all of them consider making some instructonal material (books or videos) so that you wouldn't need to meet them personally (though it is always the best method of being taught pool). They are in different stages of their projects (I believe Blackjack is the one closest to the finish line) but once they are available we are all happy! :)

I just started practicing straight pool again and ran 21 last night. I know, I need help. It has been quite some time since I played straight pool that I was happy to just get to a break shot and successfully complete it. I hope to increase this number shortly.

OK, got to 14...

...but missed position on the break ball.

I was playing well and starting to think a little more strategically thanks to a pm from a certain "author" on here:D Thanks, coach!

Still losing focus too much though. Having all those balls to shoot at makes me rush through the early stages of a rack when I should be playing strategically from the beginning.

One great side benefit is that my 8-ball game is being helped dramatically by practicing straight pool. It's gotten me to SLOW DOWN and play much smoother and with more control.

MM...a 40% increase!

Ran a 145 tonight. Pretty clean run; I was really happy with it.

Played 3 games, and I think I ran at least a 70 in all of them. ;)

45 in feb.

I had a 45 around in feb. Not so big around here, but pretty good for me.

Congratulations - its great to hear that you're hitting them good - and now that the WC is moving to August, it give you a bit more time to prepare! Hope to see you there!

I had a 118 last week - it was pretty ugly - other than that fluke - I'm habitually crumbling around the 4th and 5th rack.

David, the fact that we haven't met yet is crazy, so I'm really hoping we both get invites to the WC and can both play. That would be great!

Congratulations Steve! I wish I could run three times less regularly and that would make me happy... We are not used to see John Schmidt being only 3rd here in the rank list, but I hope he manages to occupy the top with his new run (meaning he not only ran 100 for his planned DVD but his run continued to make at least 300! :D)

Thanks Vahmurka. My hunch is that John and Thorsten's runs on this list are not accurate, lol, but until we're told of new numbers we have to accept the current ones. ;)

My new high run and John Schmidt done filming

First I'm excited to announce my high run in 14:1 has jumped from 10 to 12 as of Sunday March 9, 2008. Looking forward to getting through that first rack. :D

If I improve two balls a month, it should only take me 16 or 17 years to reach 400.

Hmmm, I'll start eating more spinach to see If I can speed up that time table.

Now for some real news, John Schmidt finished filming the new straight ball instruction DVD yesterday at 9 Mile Billiards here in Pensacola.
I was happy to help with its production by locating an extension cord and then staying out of the way during filming. :D We all do what we can.

John did get a new high run for 2008 of 175 on Saturday and If memory serves the run during production on yesterday was 164.

The film crew supervisor said it would probably be around three weeks before the DVD were ready, though I don't actually know when they will be available for sale.

It is a work in progress, but the filming done, so now we can hurry up and wait.

Good job John!

55 in January followed by 51,47,41.I still dont know whats wrong with my mind. Those was runs one after another.Damn im able to do 100+,i got skills but my head.....its a different story ;)
March 47 on Dynamic Olympic II pro cut pockets.Damn its totally different game on this table with brand new Simonis 860 and Aramith Super Pro.I hope for better runs in such great playing conditions

I had forgotten your name Bill when I made the above post. That is why you got described as "Film Crew Supervisor", lol. Hope you don't mind.:D

I had 2 runs of 10 at Hard Times Sacramento on a 9 ft. table March 14th. Beat my old high of 9! Had an unlucky bounce after breaking up a cluster on one run and left myself with only a bad cut shot or a very low percentage combo.

44 today- missed a relatively easy rail first shot with a good layout- should have been at least 50- oh well

I think some of John's talent wore off when he took a few shots at SBE with my cue; new high Sunday March 23 of 27!

I'm getting there!

13 - tonmo, Jan

Got a ways to go! My short term goal is in the 20's, I can definitely do it if I get good shape with the break ball...

Hi Folks,

Pat Howey and I played this past week. Against me he had 116 and 135. Against him, I had an 87 and ( I believe) 95. Against another local player, he busted 150. Hope he posts with the correct number. He is still in Rochester for another week. Don't know if he has internet access here. Years ago, he would run 200+ on me on a regular basis.
