2010 US Open 9 Ball Championship - An Open Letter from Barry Behrman

Seriously the ass kissing some of you do on the forum is beyond annoying. Whether you agree with Kelly or not, she like anyone else has a right to express an opinion regardless of what someone has or has not done for the sport.

And so do we. By the way, how does Kelly's ass taste?

Barry only makes changes because he has to, not because he wants to. This "he does it because he loves pool" is a tired example that's been parroted over and over. Sure, it's a great event, no doubt, but it's the behind the scenes activities that I'm the most critical about. The manipulating of the draw, table assignments and times of play that can
determine who goes deep in a tournament that I'm sure, with a little coaching from the worlds greatest TD, will/can assure the best odds of a player to go deep. I'm I the only one in the world who thinks this and has the nerve to say it? Come on, lets get real. Nothing is a better teacher than experience. Pool is still in its infancy and these things will change in time. A great start is to have an open draw that includes all of the above. . everything transparant.(now that would be exciting) I'm beginning to dread hearing my posts but change will come eventually. I don't like arguing with strangers but I can be open to discussion. What's to discuss? Making friends the hard way.

What you are implying here is pure garbage! Yes, there are seeded players in the U.S. Open. After that it is every man (and woman) for himself, the way it should be. NO ONE gets preferential treatment, in so far as match times or table assignments. They take the table and time we give them, PERIOD! I can say this with absolute certainty during the last two years I have been working this event. Even top players have been forfeited for being late to their match! We may put a better or more exciting match on the TV table but that is a decision made to accommodate Accu-Stats and their fans.

By the way, Scott Smith will not be working the Open this year, but I'll tell him you send your regards.

I want to get away from all this "Fischer" talk.

I would like to point out something here that i feel most people have missed.

Over the years these tournaments have slowly stuck it to the players. Not paying them, paying them slowly, taking the cash and running, etc.

I truly wonder if this US Open announcement would have happened if Johnny, Steve, and the other pros didn't get together and tell the pool world to get their crap together.

I don't want to rain on Barry's day in the sun, but to me it's a day late. I've been saying for years the pro's have to take a stand and now that they have it seems Barry and hopefully others have taken note and will start doing the right thing.

Check out this Accu-Stats ad in 1986 for the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship at the "old" Q-Masters. This was the Fifth U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship.

Scroll down to the next-to-the-last page: 1986 U.S. Open Advertisement in Accu-Stats

32 players and $3,000 first place, $195 entry fee, and $10,000 total purse.

I guess we've come a long way since this era. This is one pool tournament that has grown over the years and managed to keep going.

Now it is a 256-player field and $40,000 first place. Wow!

Keep it going, Barry! I don't know how you have managed to keep it alive in this difficult pool world, but I'm glad you did.

Hope he's ok, are you allowed to expand?

I'm not sure why Scott "The Shot" Smith won't be at this year's U.S. Open, but I, too, hope he is okay.

I always get a kick out of him, the way he introduces the players. This year's Open will seem odd without him and Buxton both. :(

I have quite a few Scott Smith pics, but here's a cute one of him giving an autograph to a fan on a cigar, of all things. :grin-square:

It will be strange not hearing Scott introduce the players this year. I've been to the US Open for many years and I wouldn't miss it unless some type of emergency came up and Scott just seems like he's part of the Open. I hope things are OK with him. He'll be missed by many and me in particular. He's a good guy and a great tournament director......

Wow, this is amazing. So, if someone bad mouth's a project you are doing you can/should write a press release and tell the whole world about it? I mean, really? This is like throwing spears. People have complaints and judgments all the time about things. This isn't a new concept to express opinions, but to address it in an open letter? And quite frankly, I've heard WORSE things from others about the US Open before.

I never would have heard what Kelly said, but now I know because he put it in a PRESS RELEASE!

If I wrote a press release for every person who had a complaint about the women's tour I helped run for 9 years, you all would be really peeved at me for taking up so much space in your life.

People complain. People make comments. To write a letter to the whole world about....? I don't get it. I really don't. Someone enlighten me, seriously. Because I'd like a different perspective so I can get this bad taste out of my mouth.

AkaTrigger you are 100% correct in what you say, if the letter hadn't been published most of us would never had heard about it and there would be no thread about it. I don't know Barry, but I do know Kelly and have talked to her about this subject, albeit briefly, so will someone write an open letter about that too? It was me who brought the subject up, not in reference to the US Open but in general. Kelly's opinion is her opinion it hasn't changed from when I spoke with her, she doesn't think (in general) that Women playing in Men's Tournaments is the way to go. Kelly believes building the Womens Tour back up is the way to go, you must respect that is he opinion. Personally I not usre I agree, I would love to see it, but I am not on the Womens Circuit and I hope that everyone would respect my opinion as just that 'my opinion'. I also think in these tough economic times any tournament could do with all the top players in the world being present. The more sponsorship, the more media coverage that can be built the better, it's tough out there.

My point exactly! But people probably won't harass you since you are so well-respected here  But very well put, and I agree with you 100%.

It isn't that I agree with Kelly or anything. I just don't agree with Barry addressing it in a press release.

So who is the TD for the US Open this year? Secret? Johnnyt

Ken Shuman and yours truly. Last I heard, Scott was okay but not up to working right now. It could all change in a heartbeat though, so we will see. Like everyone else, I love Scott's intro of the players. He has been my buddy since he was a teenager. I met him in the late 60's when he went on the road with Arizona Sean and came out to L.A. We played one time and I won. Scott has been badgering me for a rematch for forty years. :)

I thought it had been posted on the forums that Scott was in jail. Is that incorrect?

Excellent post, Melissa.

One aspect of Barry's letter that I was surprised at was his attempt to muzzle the top female player, Kelly Fisher. Read the following excerpt from his open letter in which Barry tries to silence Kelly Fisher:

"She admitted to saying that and when I heard this, I immediately called Tamre Green-Rogers who approached Miss Fisher at the women’s U.S. Open. She again admitted to saying what she said and was informed that she should not have said that publicly. I went through the proper channels months ago inviting any and all women to play in our 35th annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships and after discussing all the details, we had their blessing to announce it. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but we also have to avoid saying things like boycott, that’s exactly what pool doesn’t need. It’s a small world out there and everyone knows everything in the computer world. "

Barry's attempts to silence Kelly Fisher both publicly and through back-channels amounts to blatant intimidation.

I don't understand whats wrong with it. If the story is true, then Kelly was openly encouraging players to boycott his event...if allowed to continue and if Kelly got enough players to side with her, then it could significantly affect his financial investment.

I don't have a problem with him sending out a PR and outing her in this fashion. He is well within his rights to defend his business dealings. Perhaps the PR could have been worded more PC, but she had to have been prepared for him to react to her pushing for players to boycott his event. Its not nice, but its just life and its just business. If she wants to push for a boycott, then he should be allowed to defend his tournament in whatever way he sees fit...as long as its legal.
