2023 Favorite Pool Memory

Looking over the past year, there have been many great pool happenings and memories created.

I had a tough time deciding whether it was the Matchroom Nineball World Pool Cup in Kielce, Poland, or the Spanish Open in Luga, Spain. After reviewing a few of the screenshots and Matchroom Taka Images, the Spanish Open is my number one favorite memory for 2023.

A fun moment between matches at the 2023 Spanish Open was Eklent Kaci and his younger brother, Kledio being interviewed together. The interviewer asks Kledio if he's ever beaten his older brother in pool, and Kledio says no, but Elkent starts to chuckle and says that's not true, that Kledio has beaten him a few times. They both laughed. I love these human interest stories in pool. They make it fun.

Runner-up Marc Bijsterbosch from Holland made three golden breaks in a row on his way to the finals, which was awesome, and watching the 31-year-old Dang Jin Hui lift the trophy was heartwarming to see his joy, as he'd not been active on pool's tournament trail in a while.

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz's father competed in the event, shown here with Francisco's good buddy, David Alcaide.

But what made it special for me was the audience participation in Luga, Spain, singing in between matches, dancing in the aisles, and raising their hands in glee. I'll never forget that. It was beautiful.

What's yours?

USA taking it to Team Europe and almost getting the Mosconi Cup back. 🙄
Clearly, our memories differ because in my memory we canned them.

Watching the rest of the US team so carefully and lovingly lift SVB onto the table so he would not break a hip made me realize there is still hope in the world...

Many, most mentioned here already. In general just Matchroom doing great stuff, but also Shark having some really nice matches.

Two things. #1. Doing commentary with Mark White at the Sharks Club International Open. #2. Not having a pool table in my living room anymore! I actually have a real living room with a nice comfortable couch and big screen TV. I can watch all the pool I want in comfort.

And Jay, I think having a completely different Pinoy in your new home/life is the best ;).

Best pool memory for me would be the National Artistic Pool Championship. I scored my highest prelim score ever. Scored my first perfect discipline to secure my second national draw title. But the biggest part for me during that tournament was going shot for shot with Florian on day one and being behind him by a very small margin. Hope I can parlay that momentum to the World Championships.

Nice!!!! Congrats and good luck!!

Developing a variable acceleration stroke for the 14.1 breakshot. Before 14.1 breakshot was 15% success, new breakshot is 95% success from multiple positions.

14.1 breakshot had puzzled me for a lot longer than it should.

Being in the right state of mind for pool is so critical. Finding the right exercises and techniques helped the most.

Piloting a human is so much harder than any scientific equipment that is functional, human equipment is nonlinear at times.

i forgot efren's run at derby. wasn't the best DCC from a PPV perspective, with some matches played with no commentary (or crowd even), but that run was awesome. hope he plays the upcoming one
