2023 World Snooker Championship / April 15th - May 1st

This is reminiscent of the time, back in 2000, when golfer Stephen Ames did some trash talking about Tiger Woods prior to meeting him in the Match play event and Tiger whipped his butt 9 & 8.
Even better IMHO I believe Colin Montgomery was in the final pairing with Tiger and said something like - let's see how he reacts to being tested.

Montgomery looked like he had went thru a wringer , and Tiger looked prime to hook up with some waitresses.😉

No hard feelings. A good interview post match.
Thanks for the share. It was interesting to hear Ronnie say that his sports doctor, Steve Peters, told him not to run during the World Snooker Championship because it would take too much energy or words to that effect.

Just woke up and knowing Kyren had started with Higgins 3 hours ago, I checked the score before opening DAZN. Higgins 8, Karen 0. Oh boy and Kyren has 147 from round 1. Yikes! Now to go watch and see how that came about.

Well at the opening break off the comment was, "the odds makers have Kyren a slight favorite." LOL have to wonder if that inspired John. 🤷

Actually, Colin was paired with Tiger in the third round of the 1997 Masters and claimed that he had the advantage because he had a lot more experience and he was battling for the #1 ranking while Tiger was unranked. Tiger shot 65 while Colin shot 74.

Are there 8 players left? Is it free to watch anywhere? Do they show only one match at a time like pool streams? Thanks.

Some last 16 matches are still in play and will conclude tonight / tomorrow morning (UK time).

There are usually 2 matches shown simultaneously (at this stage...in the later stages the format changes to single table), however if a session (typically a block of 8 frames) or match finishes early then there may only be 1 table available.

Thanks! Wow, there are only 32 players, single elimination for the world championship? I take it there must be qualifying events? Or is the entire season the qualifier, and only the top 32 are picked, like the MR invitational pool events? Sorry for the basic questions:)

I watch pool/snooker on YouTube and it's great with no commercials and can rewind, fast forward and pause it. I was watching a snooker match from the early 90"s and the ref called a foul and the player had a stunned look on his face. I heard the bad hit ( push shot) and pretty sure he knew it also. I played it back and it definitely was a push shot

I only watched a few min and turned it off. I guess as a "casual" snooker fan, Ronnie is the only one I'll sit to watch.

I don't know how this game made it and pool didn't. The individual games take forever, the matches take forever times 100, and it seems even more boring than pool. I guess that's promising for Emily and Barry for pool. If they made Snooker popular, pool should be even easier, as the core game itself seems better to watch.

IMO:)

16 are seeded, the top 16 on the ranking. the others have to qualify for the remaining 16 spots. snooker is always single elim. it's cutthroat, but on the other hand the prize money is high. first round losers get 20k GBP, quarter finalists get 50k.

Yeah, snooker historically has always had long matches (the early years had matches that lasted for days), although it wasn't always single elimination, but some sort of challenge format (the history is quite interesting, but I can't remember the exact details off the top of my head).

In terms of the modern tournament, the top 16 in the rankings automatically get seeded through (and separated so 1 can't play 2 until the final and seed 1 vs seed 4 wouldn't happen until the semi-final).

In terms of who qualifies, its slightly more complicated, but is something like this:

Qualifying round one: Players ranked 81 to 112 against those seeded 113+
Qualifying round two: Qualifying round one winners against players ranked 49-80
Qualifying round three: Qualifying round two winners will against players ranked 17-48
Qualifying round four: Qualifying round three winners play each other

Then the qualifiers are randomly drawn against the top 16 seeds for the first round at the Crucible, so it can be the case that someone ranked 17/18/19/20 has just had a bad run, dropped out of the top 16 and you get two world class players meeting in round 1!

Ronnie is what got me into snooker.

The more you watch and learn the intricacies of the game, the more you'll want to watch it.
