I have to laugh at all the incredulity over Lombardo. The guy won his first round match over a good foe to make his path easier. He did what he had to do.
Woodward didn’t do what he had to do. Styer didn't. Wolford didn’t.
Lombardo will probably lose his next match, but credit to him. He knows the game inside out and keeps plugging away.
Interesting to see the UK semi finalists perform. Fortunski and Makkonen played poorly and are gone. Caputo and Labutis, who appear to be on the rise, both were strong. They advance. Not surprised in the least by how these four did.
Kledio Kaci really looked good, as did his big brother. SVB, FSR, Filler, the younger Ko, Shaw, Teutscher, Wiktor Z and … Kuo Po Cheng were other big standouts.
Gorst struggled mightily but fought hard to get into single elimination. He showed grit.
I was surprised by Biado and Ouschan flaming out rather badly. Woodward played well in spots, but too many misses vs sharper opponents. Styer made critical errors at key moments. Disappointing.
Very competitive tournament so far. I like it better than the UK Open.
