I like to use reinforcement labels that are used for fixing the holes on notebook paper when you tear them. You can get like a thousand of them at Walmart for hardly anything. They are just little doughnut shaped stickers that are super thin. Balls shoot out of them fine, I haven't had any trouble with them affecting play.

I have used the gum lables as dgraham1311 described and they work quite well. particularly when you are preacticing shots over & over and want an easy way to reset the balls. Works well and I do not see any noticable interferance on the balls. For lines I have used white medical tape, which you can purchase at any drugstore. I got the tip from one of the Byrne's educational videos. This works quite well, also with no noticable interferance on the balls.

Lines Pencil

Besides the rack area for straight pool I have quite a few dots

and a couple of straight lines drawn to help with drills and fundamentals.

IMO use lines very spraringly and dots or paper reinforcements for the drills/shots you do most frequently.

Do not use ball point pen to draw lines. A sharpie is ok but I prefer a number two carpenters pencil for drawing lines and my spots (dots)
For what it is worth.

You can also use chalkboard chalk. Cheap and erasable.

Yup, I gridded out my table using regular chalk and it works just fine. I would not suggest using this on newer high quality cloth but if you are planning on replacing it soon than this will work fine for you.
It comes in very handy when laying out trick shots also.

I like the reinforcement circles and sharpie for the rack and spot line and head string line. For doing drills where you want a line do what Bob Jewett does, get some tailors chalk it is at fabric stores, draws white on cloth and comes off with wet cloth. It comes as a pencil or a stick with a holder or as leads in a pen type holder. If you draw the lines vigorously multiple times with a ruler it does not come off as easily.

One of the tables at my friends house is gridded. I have never heard a complaint about the lines and it helps when doing drills

I have used a carpenter's chalk line with blue chalk with good results, when you are done a good brushing and a shop vac will remove the lines.

I think they are not good for practice.
If you want to mark spots for placing cueball/object ball and a simple A4 paper for defining a position area that's fine but drawing lines all over the table bears the danger of you getting used to them for reference..
Position patterns are infinite practically, you need to know the type of shot you are studying but being able to adjust to any given position without needing specific lines cause most of the situations coming up in the game do not fall exactly on them.

I did what you are planning on doing. It was a mistake. don't use a permanent marker. Use the stickies that you can get at a office supply store. You can get dots, holes and etc.

If you want a straight line get a laser level from one of the home improvement stores.

Draw Lines

They used to sell a black rule {line} on a roll of sticky transparent tape that was used in the printing industry. Since everything is digital now I don't know if it is still made.
