There's a reason people stopped using the sardo rack.
And the reason was?

Sardo comes to Hawaiian Brian's a couple times a year, or used to. I talked to him about a year ago. I'll ask him next time I see him. He should be an expert...he created it.
Why would anyone spend $100 on a contraption that requires the cloth to be "trained"? And includes water and some tapping.
When you can get a non-permanent template for $20.
Those divots were hated by the one-pocket players at Hard Times.
Why don't they just rack them how they are and use a speed gun , that way you can't soft break and if a ball gets deflected from going over the head string you don't lose your turn

Plenty of tournaments with this rule but no where as many illegal breaks. I think the break box and 9 on the spot is main reason.
3-4 a match on very solid breaks is ridiculous.
The Sardo rack lined up with 2 dots at the foot of the rack....what divits are you talking about?

All 15 of them.
I believe he's referring to the divots caused by the balls being pressed into the cloth by the mechanism of the rack in question. If you use a Sardo long enough, the cloth will start to look and feel like the table is tapped.
So....who's going to sit at every table and speed check the cue ball on every break?

Why don't they take ALL these variations and shelve them & just rack the 1 on the spot, no break box, winner breaks like it ALWAYS was & let the best gunslinger prevail? All this tinkering with the game has ruined it.
All this talk about it had become a breaking contest, not the best player, blah blah freaking blah. The best player is one who has developed his entire game, including the break. You still have to get out.
I've read far too many threads & posts about how watching someone put a package on another is boring. Was the Shaw display night before last boring? Was what Shaw did to Mika Feminine at Turning Stone in that 22 minute slaughter boring? Not to me, that's what pool always was & always should be. Not only a test of a players physical skills but also also a test of his focus & mental toughness.

The issue with the 9 ball break for years has been the soft break when using a template. These rules prevent that, and believe it or not, actually favor the better breaker.
That's right, no one cares to bother comprehending just how hard it it can be to get 3 balls past the headstring. You don't need to practice your break 8 hours a day to learn how to soft break, but you better practice if you want to have success under these rules.
