300-600 dollar cue advice

What’s up Cease?

I absolutely love my wrapless “Peach” with a regular ol’ maple shaft. It has a crisp hit as I strike to and through the cue ball, but it lets me know when I mishit (sort of like catching a pitch with a wooden bat in on your hands.)

My wife plays a Viking with a Vikore shaft. It has a little bit of a spongy feel to it. Also the way the shaft meets the joint and more noticeably where the shaft meets the ferrule have ridges.

There are a couple downsides:
First, the Pechauer Gold medium tip that comes standard on all their cues is too soft and mushrooms constantly. I used that thing til it was wore out and it required constant maintenance.
Second, they use a proprietary joint. This will make it more difficult to grab an aftermarket shaft. Granted, I love my maple shaft and have never looked into a carbon fiber or laminate shaft. I would expect Pechauer would offer the most popular shafts with their pin. However, that eliminates the possibility of finding someone with a shaft for sale (say 5/16 x 14) and mating it with your existing butt.

I would absolutely buy a Mezz now if I didn’t live in the U.S. I have heard nothing but good things. The thing is that there are so few options to buy American products anymore. For example, go to Home Depot and try to buy a shovel, the most basic of tools, that was made in America. You will not find one; when forced to buy foreign because of lack of options I will. If given a choice I’ll play American and I love my “Peach”

What kind of custom would be in that price range?
There are a lot of cuemakers on az. I recently had member here, build me a cue for $350 two shafts. Also had a Leon sly build me a sneaky pete that was $375.
And just a quick search on what's available now. Found these. The Montana Taylor cue being the best deal all that at $550.

That's because bunch of old guys have to say it's the Indian not the arrow, it is a requirement. Funny, except for very old guys virtually all strong players I know use the technology.
I'm an old guy who feels like this:

There is a strong likelihood that so many of todays young players are using new technology because they are seeing their heroes of today using this new technology. Let's use SVB as an illustrative example. He switched over to new cf tech probably because it's what his sponsor wants him to use so they can sell them. Shane played pretty sporty before his current cf gear - and he also played great before using non cf ld, too, right?

More examples would be Jimmy Moore, Eddie Taylor, The Miz, Efren, Irving Crane, Harold Worst, Willie Mosconi, Cornbread Red, Allen Hopkins, Wade Crane and on and on...

Please don't get me wrong; I'm not saying new tech equipment won't improve our games but me personally, I'd be very satisfied just to get my game where any of these old school low-tech guys got theirs. Or anywhere remotely close. ;)

best,
brian kc

To the OP are you confused yet?
I went through the same thing about 10 years ago here and I wound up buying a Lucasi cue that I still have.
I have 3 different cues that I rotate thru and i still play with the Lucasi now and then.
This type of question is the same as what brand of car should I buy,it will drive you into massive indecision.
You have been given many good choices,Joss,Schon,Mezz,Pechauer and a couple others.
The only one I would not buy is the Pechauer because of their proprietary joint,I had one and called them and asked if I want an extra shaft do I have to buy it from them and the guy on the phone laughed at me and said yup you have to buy it from us,screw you and I sold the cue.

The best advice I can give you is stop reading this thread and just buy a cue and move along.

One of my Schmelkes had the Ultraskin Medium tip. It wasn't the same cue, but it hit much crisper than the stock tip. If the weight bolt is deep in the butt, you can back it out to shift the balance. I did that with one of my Schmelkes.
Just did that now I'm off to the hall to see if it makes any difference, i assume it will, I backed it out probably a full inch

the best post, I've read on this topic for a long time. I feel the same. The thing guys forget is, how long it takes to adjust to today's new stuff. I'm sure given time, it's great. Is it any better, I'm not so sure!!

I had a guy in another thread try to convince me that SVB best results have come as the result of changing to CF Cynergy shaft.
I never advocated the technology for the old guys, although I do know some that use it.

This has nothing to do with your post.
Whatever somebody wants to use that's fine with me. I will not switch to skinny shaft or regular shaft, I like wood LD shaft.
I just find it funny how the advice to the beginners is not to get a CF or LD shaft, and that they should work on their stroke.
It's kind of like duhh, but why can't they do both. :)

I'm in the market for a new cue, around 300 to 600 dollar budget. So far I've narrowed it down to Pechauer and Joss, but am open to other possibilities. If you play with or have experience with either of those brands what are some positives or negatives you feel about them? Thanks in advance for any help. -Beto-
I would add mezz to your short list.

Why taper it, I thought it didn't matter what you used?
Merely in my head comfort honestly. So many years playing with a Z2 at 11.7 (worn down to 11.6). Another +10yrs of snooker before that. I could do everything with my 12mm wx900 that I could do with my Z2. However the smaller diameter just feels more comfortable in my open bridge. That doesn't change my ability to play with the cue.

I also have a favourite wrist watch and shoes I perfer to play in. Neither of those items change my game as well.

I only play pool wearing red underwear.

How would I find and reach out to different cue makers on here and be able to check out there work? Is there a section in this forum specifically for cue makers where they post all their previous builds?

Currently I shoot with a Schmelke, it's 19oz but it feels kinda heavy and clumsy, I'm assuming it has to do with the balance of the cue. I've really only played with my cue so i don't have a lot of comparison. I think it hits a bit soft for my liking so I think I need something a bit stiffer. Is the stiffness of the cue primarily a tip issue or does it have more to do with over all construction of the cue?

A 19 oz should not feel heavy, even with a rear balance, did you look to see if there is a weight bolt you can remove?
The hit stiffness is mostly a combination of the tip, shaft taper/diamiter and wood used, but also the butt wood and construction comes into play.
That is why it's not easy to find a fit for you with just one cue or even 10 cues since combos of shafts and butts and tips are pretty much endless.

If you are in an area with decent pool halls, or more importantly decent pool players that are nice LOL, you can see if people have shafts that fit on your butt and you can play with a few of those. If you list your area there could be 10 AZB members near you with a bunch of things to try out. I keep a spare cue and a few shafts in my case for pretty much situations like this.

That's what I thought. I weighed it myself, it was 19.3 but feels heavier than my girls cue which is 19oz. It does have a bolt, it was all the way in the butt so I backed it out all the way to try and change the balance point more to the rear so it would be closer to where my hand grip is. How does the stiffness relate to shaft diameter? Bigger diameter, stiffer hit? I'm in LA so i would assume there's quite a bit of members around me. The best hitting cue I've tried so far was a Joss butt with an OB shaft from a buddy of mine. Perfectly balanced and stiff hit.
