Ned Morris makes great shafts.He can build either standard or LD shafts and he uses "through ferrules" or capless ferrules.They help with deflection.His 14 inch taper is a winner too.His prices and wait time are reasonable as well.If you have big bucks to spend Dennis Searing is a great choice.Good luck.

Nice. Thanks for the reply. And no I'm not looking to spend $250 on one shaft from one of the "big boys" in the business. All I'm looking for is a solid playing maple shaft with an ivory ferrule. Maybe one of two of the old "Lakewood" type shafts.

If it's old maple you want Steve Klapp has it. I've hit with one and they are monsters. I'd bet that one of his at 13mm with an ivory ferrule could weigh 4.5oz. Jim Pierce has the bowling alley shafts but I haven't hit with one
 
If I were in your boat I would try Steve Lomax as well. Heard nothing negative about him and people love his products. He is supposedly great to deal with also and supports pool in a big way.
 
I'm sold on Dominiak Dominators. Have them on three high-end customs
and they truly make a difference in my game.
 
Keith Hanssen makes the second best hitting shafts I've ever tried next to Eric Crisp.

Much easier to get a shaft out of Keith though.

I'd recommend him all day long.

All good suggestions above IMO.

My choices would be;

1. Rick Howard - his taper is as close to perfect IMO, and the quality is beyond reproach. (I am having him build a shaft as we speak, he has built 10-20 shafts for me, all perfect. Let me say again, all perfect)

2. Andy Gilbert - great shafts and good prices.


I play with a Searing shaft. It is supposed to be the best in the country. I have to admit it is probably the best playing shaft I have ever used.

But the two above would be great alternative, at 1/3 or 1/4 of the price of a Searing shaft.

I'm gonna have to recommend Mr. Steve Klapp as well. His OG shafts are beyond amazing.

David Schmelke, for roughly $65-70 you get a lot of bang for your buck. His preference is to use melamine ferrules that are non-threaded and uncapped. Some people may not like it, but you asked who makes the best shaft for the money.

if you like a heavy shaft try michael morgan, i dont know if its the wood or the way he treats it, but its a very different than anything ive ever tried. its a softer feeling shaft, and with an ivory ferrule, could be what ur looking for, probobly great for the 14.1 player

+1 on this. A Pierce cue has been my main player for about 1 1/2 years; it's got one of his bowling alley shafts. I like this shaft a lot; for my taste it has a firm hit with just the right "spring" to it. The wood hasn't moved at all in spite of it being in and out of my house regularly. I don't know for a fact that bowling alley wood is any better than "regular" shaft wood, but it stands to reason that it is well aged and reasonably dense.
 
I just spoke with Mr. Klapp on the phone about his old growth shafts. What a great guy. He was very helpful and happy to answer all of my questions. I think I'm leaning towards getting two of his old growth shafts made. Would anyone happen to have any pics of those old growth shafts of his that they can share?

personally and imo, if they don't have a decent well updated website ($5 bucks a month nowadays) stay away
